anyone have an opinion on brands etc?

What's your price range? What sources do you need it to play? This iPod speaker dock from Harman Kardon is pretty nice and not very big.

no price range- have a 64gb zune (shut up)

If you like music, I suggest you get a so-called audiophile system. Burn a CD with your favorite music, visit a specialist store and listen through their selection of amps and speakers. It doesn't necessarily have to be that expensive and it's totally worth every penny.
-
Oh, I own a lot of CDs (hate drm shenanigans) so it could be an honest to goodness stereo- not a player deck

not an audiophile, but I like music (possible) at any rate im also on a third floor apartment so I need to keep whatever I get civil

I'm very pleased with my current setup. It's a bit bigger than a compact stereo, but not really huge or anything. It's suitable for a smaller living room and the bass is not very loud at all. I also live in an apartment complex and I've never had any complaints from my neighbors.
Amplifier: Marantz PM7001
CD player: Marantz CD5001
Speakers: Amphion Argon³
Edit: I also have one of my old Technics SL-1210 turntables hooked up via a DJ mixer.

ill take a look- thanks
-
yeah I dunno if ill ever get into vinyl. I found the cd deck and amp on amazon- couldnt find speakers
-
It's a smaller Finnish brand (http://www.amphion.fi/en/products/argon3/). They should be available from the these retailers: http://www.amphion.fi/en/where-to-buy/?ccmSearch=1&akID[29][country_select][country]=US
Edit: copy/paste the full link instead of clicking on it.

cool thanks

Good sound is partly subjective and I've listened to some expensive setups that sound absolutely horrible. If you live near one of the listed retailers, I suggest you drop by and listen to a few different brands instead of taking the advice of some stranger on the internet.

I just need something thats quality and will last. I've recently invested heavily in CDs after several 'lol u need to buy this again' DRM bullshit- so I generally rip cds to mp3 but I dont want some crazy ass laptop to speaker crap in my living room- plus I want a setup that allows me to hear clearly from anywhere in the livingroom/diningroom/kitchen.

but yeah- shopping around right now; trying to find a balance between what im expecting/want and whats out there. at the same time I want something that will last- no weird ass coby audio equipment
-
Having something that will last is how I convinced myself to spend a little more. I plan to squeeze at least a decade out of this stereo and hopefully it'll last three times as long. At that point the price doesn't really matter.
-
Agreed. If you have the money to invest extra for quality in something you will use frequently its totally worth it.
-
I use a soundbar/subwoofer combo for my tv- but being in an apartment complex im very aware of the noise I generate. I care because I hate when other apartments are noisy all the time. Also, I tend to fill the emptiness in my heart by stressing about work.
-
You cant fill the heart with anything, stupid. You'd die. Buy more cars!
-
Throw a ping pong ball around your music room, the amount it bounces correlates to the wattage power of the speakers you should buy. (Mine are 1440 watt speakers).

Hijacking MAF's thread - I want to replace my desktop computer speakers with a quality 2.1 setup. Any suggestions?

I've had a Klipsch Promedia 2.1 for years and have always been pretty happy with it.
Though while we're here - can anyone recommend a good clock radio/speaker setup that I can plug my Zune HD into?
-
I love my Zune, but good luck with anything new unless it has some generic aux option :*(

On GAF I see Swans recommended quite a bit.

Swan M10's are the shit! They are worth the money. Argon's on the other hand are the best kind of speakers for a nice little audiophile system if your into LP's. Personally I'm waiting on Mcintosh's micro system that thing looks sweet.
