Title: Anyone know any good tips for changing sleeping patterns?
Post by: The Sceneman on October 02, 2012, 11:48:05 AM
I'm nocturnal at the moment and want to fix this and have more regular waking hours and basically get more out of my days.

It's 5am now and I'm wide awake in bed after trying to sleep for a couple of hours. I'm considering just getting up, making some coffee and trying to get some work done. I have around 4-5 hours work I need to get through and I figure I can just blob out and play games for the rest of the day.

Don't know if this is a better idea than trying to sleep. The work absolutely has to be done tomorrow and I have social engagements from 5-10pm. It could be another couple of hours before I get to sleep thus I'd wake up in the afternoon and not have time to get anything done.

Of course, thinking and worrying about all this is keeping me up also.

Hmmm

Get up at 6 am. Work hard all day. Fall asleep exhausted.

that was my idea, as I'm basically not working hard/long enough to tire myself out properly.

Fuck it I'm getting up

Physical exercise is also a good way to improve your sleeping patterns.

Stay up later and later. Eventually it'll loop back around. (I've done this several times.)

Start drinking beer about 7 pm. Go to bed around 11:30pm. Wake up at 7am rested and refreshed.

Just stay up through the night and then go to sleep at the right time the next night. The last 6 or so hours are the hardest, try not to be home during that time so you don't doze off on the couch or something.

I actually missed a class for the first time in forever because I overslept so hopefully my advice works.

2pm now and I'm just about ready to cabb out, lol. Almost done with the work I needed to do so I'm stoked. Also managed to slip in a couple of games of FTL to get my blood all hot and crazy

Make sure you get outside and see the sun - this helps fix your circadian rhythms apparently. Also, heavy deadlifts and squats followed by a carb-heavy meal will make you sleep like a baby

Get up early consistently, whether you need to or not. And as above, if you exercise and eat well your body will tell you when its tired.

When I travel and need to adjust to the new timezone, I sleep with the drapes open. Sunrise does a pretty good job of getting through my eyelids and starting the waking process. Get up early enough, and that nocturnal stuff will FLEE.

Also, apparently Valerian Root will knock yo' ass out, if you're having trouble getting to sleep.

I tried that, I think it works more as a placebo. Didn't notice improvement long term.

I peeked at the wikipedia page on it last week (which means "IT'S A FACT" :teehee ) which stated it is clinically proven. I've never tried it. Melatonin just makes me spacey.

super-obvious but since we seem to be getting into crazy town with the herbal stuff: stop drinking, get off pills, sleep in a blacked out room or use a blindfold

make sure it's comfortable to sleep too, not hot/cold, just cool.

Listen to your body. Sleepyness comes and goes, if you're getting tired you might only have some time to easily fall asleep, after that you're body cycle goes up again for some time until you can quickly fall asleep.

Regular sleeping patterns also help, as does getting of the pc/tv.

thanks for all the advice!

update: so after staying up all night I had a nap from 3-5pm as I couldn't physically keep my eyes open anymore. I then hit the pub quiz with the bros and had a few beers and shit, then didn't get to sleep till 4am :/

Got up at 9am this morning and ran some errands and had a meeting and shit, but I was walking around in the rain for an hour so I was cold and tired when I got home, so NAP TIME again  :(

I have to be more disciplined about naps and stuff.

Still, I have gotten heaps done in the past couple of days and got some hysterical socialising in, so it's a win.

In regards to herbal shit, chamomile tea I find is pretty good to chill out and relax with. Better get onto that routine

Well, if you get shit done it ain't that bad is it, or at least you can work around it.

Otherwise, as you mentioned yourself naps aren't a good idea until you have a proper sleeping pattern established. Another thing that apparently is pretty bad for sleeping are those ten minute naps (like when you're watching tv and fall alspeep for a short period of time), those often will make it tough to fall asleep.

About two hours before you're ready to go to bed, turn off most artificial light sources (I.e. TV, PC, tablet, ect).  I also remember that Cormac once said to stretch really well before getting in bed and that would make you sleep better.  Its worked for me a few times...

Staying up for like 36 hours until you choose when to go to sleep and therefore your sleep schedule always works for me.  By that point you will go to sleep within 5  minutes of allowing yourself to.

Well, general stretching will definitely help but I think I was referring to a specific trick of lengthening the spine which really helped me. I got it from a review of a sleep aid book on Mark Sisson's site originally I think. All you do is lie down, raise up your hips a bit and stretch out your spine. Even just a cm or two of movement takes all this pressure off and really relaxes me. I do it habitually every time I lie down now, without thinking. I also always use a blindfold...I even travel with one. It is annoying when you don't need it when it's dark but it really helps the quality of the last few hours of sleep around dawn when the light starts seeping in.

I don't use a blind-fold or anything like that because I can't stand for anything like that to touch me while I'm sleeping.  I keep a heavy blanket over my window though and that really helps, except for when the kid tries to wake me up at 6am and turns all the lights on, or when the cats try to climb the fucking blanket...

Second the melatonin. Also, if you take enough, it gives you crazy weird dreams. Had to use melatonin last week because it turns out the OTC sleeping pills are Benadryl in disguise and made my sinus infection worse.

There's always autoerotic asphyxiation. Nothing like cutting the rope and stumbling off to bed with the best high ever.

The combination of alcohol and sleeping pills can send me into a deep slumber at pretty much any time of the day. Give it a shot.

I've never actually acclimated to getting up early. Been getting up at 6-6:30 for years, and it's still a struggle.

Some people just have a rhytm that goes against 'normal' sleeping times and no matter how long you try to condition yourself to a specific wake up time, you never will as fit as you would be at your natural rhytm.

I use sleeping pills (Unisom).

I just take half of one to get me to sleep. A whole one make me way too groggy in the morning (unless I slept for 10 hours or something)

I did it for 6 years at school, was never an issue. Then I went to university and was staying up until 2am in the morning every night and haven't been able to get that sleeping pattern back. My body just always wants to wake up at 9am, not 7.

it basically draws more water into the lower intestine so that yes, when you poop it's more, but it's not some kind of colon destroyer
