I have never beaten this game before.
I have 2 Energy tanks, the varia suit, long beam, high jump boots, and ice beam. I have 10 missile tanks. I am on my way to Ridley.
Using this map but no guide:

Using the map is cheating, breh
Go to bed

:lol guess a map does pretty much take all the mystery out of Metroid, doesn't it? This game begs for save states; the password thing drove me nuts as a kid because you had to refill your tanks every damn time you resumed the game. I think the FDS version used a Zelda-like save system and file select screen.
-
I am not using save states, but that doesn't mean I'm going to blunder around forever in rooms that look identical.
-
That's a good point, I got lost in Norfair all the time as a kid in those rooms with the bubble-looking walls. Then again, I think looping through the same set of rooms repeatedly is how they made the game last more than 20 mins.

Welcome to 1985 dude. Go play Super Metroid if you want a map.
-
Viscen, did you ever play Zero Mission on the GBA? Great remake. Might try it if the original is too redundant after a while.
-
Metroid 1 all looks the same and gives you little to no clues as to what you're supposed to be doing or where you're supposed to be going. Zero Mission's rad though.
-
I made my own map on construction paper when I was a kid. Yer a pussy.
-
The original's easter egg/trick passwords were fun to play with for a while. I only remember the Justin Bailey one anymore. Kid Icarus had a few too.
-
This is the only one I haven't beaten.
This won't be my only game for 6 months like in 1985 so I think I will stick to the quicker way of playing the game instead of getting out my construction paper of crayons. This game isn't particularly easy (at the beginning at least), I wonder how many people don't save scum on their emulator if they even bother to play it
-
Save scum? Tell us how you really feel :lol I mean, save states are definitely useful in places, especially helps remove some of the grinding / time sinks that were in those old games. I don't think I have the same patience for that stuff I did as a kid.
-
I don't think you'd really need save states too much. I've only died three times and all three deaths were before I got the first missile pack or energy tank. If I reset it right now I don't think I'd have died at all, now that I am used to the controls.
I've only had to farm health once or twice. You get the screw attack pretty early, and every E Tank fully recharges you.
-
Sorry, I should have been clearer in my first post, I meant using save states as a way to save the game and end your session. That way, you can
resume the game without enduring passwords and avoid having to refill your tanks every time you resume. When you resume from a password,
you always start with 30 energy.
-
Oh ok. I'm on vacation so I'm doing it in one sitting this afternoon. Beat Kraid and Ridley, pretty much done.
-
I forgot there were two ice beam spots. I remember as a kid I usually only found the one down that pit in Brinstar. That pit and the other one like
it in the connecting passages took me forever to get out of :lol
How's the game going Viscen? Kill the minibosses yet?
-
I'm in the second room of Tourian but I only have 100 missiles left and there doesn't seem to be an infinite respawn enemy here to get more... Let's see what happens.
-
Do those little ring dudes give you missiles? I can't remember.
-
Oh, Metroids respawn in this game, and they drop tons of health and ammo
The little red things give you absolutely nothing and are way more annoying than Super Metroid
-
That's right! I forgot. They give like 50 energy too right? I wonder if that was changed for the Western release.
-
pretty sure i still have the old map i drew up :bawse
-
The ring guys are harder than Metroids lol, the Metroids are bitches
The last room runs at 5fps, fuck
-
This last room is some bullshit, I destroyed all the red tubes but the last one traps you in the room, so I had no health left for the actual mother brain fight. I guess I have to redo it because the password is barely legible.
-
Fuck the last room, it takes ten minutes of grinding health and ammo per attempt and then you just get swarmed at 5fps for 2 minutes before you are dead.
Here is my last password

-
That last room is definitely a pain. Have you tried the trick passwords? I think some of them give you mega energy and missiles if you just want to see the ending.
-
I'd rather do it on my own file so I can see my own % and time played. I am done for now (I was playing the game for 2-3 hours uninterrupted), maybe I will try again later.
The passwords are barely legible, I hope it works later.
-
Good luck next time! When I played Kid Icarus again on the Wii VC, I used my camera phone to get the passwords. Much more reliable than writing.
-
Fuck it

-
Did you beat it with your own password?
-
Yes, and Game Genie that wouldn't let my health go before 30 lol
-
that ain't hardcore
-
Yes, and Game Genie that wouldn't let my health go before 30 lol
:lol Save states/cheating vindicated! I would have done the same damn thing. We don't have the time or patience we did as kids, eh?
-
You deserve current gen games. Enjoy your regenerating health and waypoints.
-
Hey I've done my time in Metroid, LoZ and FF1 to deserve a little easy gaming. Hell, I beat the NES Dragon Warrior II three times as a kid, I think that qualifies me for a lifetime pass.
-
I've beat tons of hard games, and I pretty much beat this one. When is the last time you tackled Mother Brain in Metroid 1 demi? That shit fucking sucks. Even with the health cheat it took forever and was zero fun.
-
viscen how often do you shave your pubes? or do you wax
