Will second Hausu (it is not very scary tho).
Avoid all Argento - he is not a good director.
-

Was gonna come suggest these. :bow2
Also:
- The Shining (classiest horror movie evah)
- Event Horizon (classiest Paul W. S. Anderson movie evah)
- Most of John Carpenter pre-mid 90's filmography (Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, Christine, Prince of Darkness, In the Mouth of Madness)
- Any Hammer Movie with Christopher Lee + Peter Cushing
- Roger Corman's Poe adaptions with Vincent Price
- Also Vincent Price in The Abominable Dr. Phibes and Dr. Phibes Rises Again
- Val Lewton is good if you want some B&W movies (Cat People, Isle of the Dead, Bedlam, etc)
- Todd Browning's Freaks, if you really want to get weirded out
I mainly only watch campy/classic horror films, as you might have guessed. :-*
-
hausu is stupid skip it unless you want to appear to have indie cred
-
- Galaxy of Terror (An okay 80s Sci-Fi/Horror movie, but it has one scene that will blow you mind)
- Killer Klowns from Outer Space
- Piranha (the Joe Dante original or the remake)
Also, if you're ready to step up to the big leagues, and watch some Jean Rollin's lesbian vampire movies ( :bow Netflix streaming :bow2 ), I recommend:
- Requiem for a Vampire
- The Shiver of the Vampires
- The Demoniacs
- Fascination
-
Evil Dead II, bro.
-

Session 9.
-
Sooo watching this:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092112/
Awesome choice.
But you should seriously also watch Kill List, it's the nearest thing to The Wicker Man, but without the naked dancing girl bit, I SERIUOTY self-dated over that bit. God damn those hips.
Grave Encounters
Lovely Molly
Detention
Thomas Houshilmes Lanes AHS is also amazing. If the 4th ep is shit, then the second season is doomed.
AL VH is actually great, and hugely better than it deserves to be.
I really hope the Waschowkis do a horror film soon.
-
The first and last short story in VHS
-
VHS felt like a weird polemic, about bros and bitches. And the horror was actually really weak.
-

But that was one of the best parts of Wicker Man. :(

Killer Klowns From Outer Space $5 Blu-Ray at Best Buy :bow2

Killer Klowns From Outer Space $5 Blu-Ray at Best Buy :bow2
HOLY FUCK! I already bought it, but god damn! Please do yourselves a favor and buy this. At $5 you have not excuses, its a great transfer too.

Mothers Day
Sleepaway Camp

Grave Encounters was good but not as scary as it could have been.
-
Grave Encounters was good but not as scary as it could have been.
Watch the sequel
-
Phantasm
Hellraiser
Xtro
Marytyrs
Dog Soldiers
Calvaire
Dead Girl
Trick r Treat
Creepshow
Dead Alive (Brain Dead)
-
Fuck if you want some nightmares watch Hellraiser :-\
-
Hellraiser :rock
-
I loved Grave Encounters. I loved how they handled the scare escalation. The audio direction was my favorite. Such a claustrophobic and suppressive sound setup.
-
Just a short list of horror films I liked from the past 5 years
The Tunnel (free Australian film you can legally torrent)
The Pact
The Innkeepers
Lovely Molly
Kill List (which is fucking amazing)
Yellow Brick Road
The Bleeding House
Coldfish
The Woman
Penumbra
Amer (a fun little throwback to 60s Eurohorror)
Trick R Treat
Dead Snow
House of the Devil
The Burrowers (fun little weird western)
Dead Girl
Pontypool
Martyrs
I Can See You (most people will probably hate this claiming it's hipster horror, but it's really quite good)
Black Water
Eden Lake
Inside
Black Devil Doll
Otto (see the unrated one if you can, but be warned lots of gay sex)
Hostel / Hostel Part 2 (watch them back to back if you can)
The Mist (the ending is dumb as hell)
Vacancy
The Orphanage
Severance
Them
The Last Winter
The Girl Next Door
-
^ Trick r Treat is amazing, Eric has good taste. Not scary though.
Session 9.
Saw it last week, OK but not really all that scary. Creepy, maybe.
Then again, I'm gonna go and recommend The Blair Witch Project.
I loved Grave Encounters. I loved how they handled the scare escalation. The audio direction was my favorite. Such a claustrophobic and suppressive sound setup.
I just watched this last week and it was so much better than I was expecting. Decent scares too.
Sequel is OK in some ways and worse in others.
VHS felt like a weird polemic, about bros and bitches. And the horror was actually really weak.
I didn't like it that much either. (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=43581092&postcount=17)

Soooo many good recommendations here! guess I'm gonna make November my horror month since my Bond marathon is in December this year anyway.

Poltergeist scared the bejesus out of me when I was a wee tyke. I wonder if it still holds up?

This Metafilter post collects many of the episodes of Hammer House of Horror

Poltergeist scared the bejesus out of me when I was a wee tyke. I wonder if it still holds up?
It does. I watched it about a year or two ago having never seen it and it was really good.
-
Poltergeist is amazing, saw for the first time like four years ago and it actually scared me.
-
You should give Lake Mungo a try, it's not horror per se, but the pay-off is immensely satisfying, and the home porn is hot.
Also Wes Cravens People Under The Stairs is a blast, and has a guy in a gimp suit with a shot gun hunting a mute inside the walls of a creaky house. Also it's probably the best thing he's done, apart from Shocker.
-
Yeah I love People Under The Stairs, especially since I saw it just after finishing Twin Peaks.
-
Oh yeah, the brother and sister were excellent, as was the black guy who was also anally ravished in Pulp Fiction.
-
Also in Mission Impossibles 2/3/4. Which is probably the number of Tom Cruises he had to sleep with, as his career seriously took off after the Disney Film Pulp Fiction.

I picked this up at my local comic book shop and it's a pretty great read. I don't know if it's worth buying online and then paying an additional 50% of the cover cost on shipping, but if you see it at like a Barnes and Nobel or something, it's worth picking up.
edit: to get a sense of what's in here, i found a scan of Rue Morgue's 100 best alternative horror films which ran in issue 50 of the magazine
http://killprettymagazine.com/facemeltingfilms/?p=366
What's strange is that not all the films made it from the article to the book (for instance, Aftermath is missing and it's really worth your time)
the book also features extended blurbs giving a bit more detail of why they're worth your time (which makes sense as they're spreading it out to 158 pages).
-
Can you paste the top twenty?
-
The Rue Morgue List Entries For Which I Can Personally Vouch
13 Tzameti -tense little noir with a great set up and execution
Abby -can be summed up as "the blaxorcist" except dealing with Baptist themes rather than Catholic ones
Abominable Dr Phibes -comedy horror with Vincent Price camping it up. kills based on Bibical Plagues
Amer -homage to 60/70s euro cinema. great colors nonsensical, dreamlike story based on tone rather than an intricate plot
Angst -crazy austrian movie about a home invasion
Anguish -see this. go in knowing as little as you can.
Attack the Block -chavs vs aliens. great fucking movie. like Monster Squad for a new generation.
the Bad Seed -kind of stagey but still slick and subversive. a mother comes to suspect her perfect daughter is a relentless murderer
Bay of Blood -one of the first bodycount films. i love almost all of Mario Bava's films but this is the only one listed in the book. i made a thread about it http://www.thebore.com/forum/index.php?topic=16343.0
Black Death -medieval horror film about colonizations wrapped up in a Church vs Heretics plot.
The Blob (remake) -johnny drama in a mullet battles a blob from space. good effects and good re-imagining of the original (which wasn't great so it's not like this is sacrilege)
Burrowers -AWESOME WESTERN HORROR FILM. Part The Searchers part Tremors (minus the humor)
Carnival of Souls -advertising man makes just one movie in his life and it's a classic. the first of the whole "dead people who don't know they're dead" horror films. hypnotic and surreal.
Cemetery Man -comedy romance with a man who works as a groundskeeper in a cemetery who has to occasionally re-kill zombies. It takes a turn for the weird in the end so may not be everyone's cup of tea.
The Changeling -classic horror film made for HBO starring George C Scott who moves into a new house after the death of his family only to find it is haunted. Good detective story mixed in with a good haunted house tale. Cribs elements from other films, but you won't care because it's so good. literally one of my favorites
A Chinese Ghost Story -more of a romance than a horror film. a young chinese priest falls in love with a ghost who has some very jealous sisters. lots of wire-fu and copious soft focus gives this a really dream like quality
Cure -a cop tries to solve a series of random murders where the perpetrators can't recall the murders nor do they have any motivation to kill
Curse of The Werewolf -based off of Werewolf of Paris but really watered down from that excellent book. I like this movie a lot. Being a werewolf would fucking suck.
Dagon -Stuart Gordon returns to Lovecraft with The Shadow Over Insmouth transported to Spain. A man discovers a village of fishmen and their terrible god.
Dead Snow -splatstick comedy of norweigan slackers versus nazi zombies. a self aware comedy which doesn't take itself too seriously and delivers lots and lots and lots and lots of inventive violence presented almost gleefully
Demons -italians are lured to a movie theater then locked in and then are killed as monster come from film being watched to eat everyone. Has race issues like whoah in the form of a pimp character.
Devil's Backbone -i don't think i really have to talk about this film on the bore.
Diabolique -one of my absolute favorites.a woman's philandering husband dies but why does she keep seeing him at the school they run?
dog soldiers -special ops vs werewolves. fucking great action horror film. hits all the right notes and hits them hard.
Duel -Spielberg's first film. made for TV. based on a short story by Richard Matheson.
Event Horizon -a haunted house in space. i love this movie.
Evil Dead Trap -i haven't seen this in forever, but it features an "abandoned" building which is basically a series of elaborate traps and features THE CRAZIEST FUCKING ENDING.
Exorcist 3 -after the horrible sequel, the author of the original book on which the first movie was made convinced Warner Brothers to let him write and direct a sequel based on his semi-sequel novel Legion. It's good.
Eyes Without a Face -a girl who is the victim of a disfiguring car crash has a surgeon father who is obsessed with fixing her and takes to murder to accomplish his aims. so good.
Fire in the Sky -this UFO abduction story deals more with the psychological aftereffects rather than the terror of the abduction itself. as a teen obsessed with ufology this movie scared the crap out of me
Frailty -i haven't seen this since it came out, but i recall liking it a great deal. Good stuff by bill paxton
Ginger Snaps -teen girls going through puberty and becoming werewolves. wonderful little anti-Buffy.
Halloween 3 -nothing to do with michael meyers but it's so good. semi-lovecraftian themes of the intersection of religion / horror and technology
Hardware -POSTAPOCALYPTIC MURDERBOT VERSUS ROAD WARRIOR SCUM. features Lemmy Killmeister.
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer -sadistic and intense almost documentary take on murder.
Horror Express -goofy peter cushing / christopher lee film about a defrosted monster killing people on a train in siberia.
House (Hausu) -insane little lsd movie about girls in a murderous house.
House of the Devil -don't think i have to expand on this one
House on Haunted Hill -vincent price in a william castle production. big on gimmicks. a lot of fun in a really goofy way.
I Saw the Devil -twisted revenge film. very gory. very intense scenes of torture with a bummer ending.
(i'll update the rest of these later)
Ichi The Killer (I'd classify this as a superhero film that happens to be really gory, but whatevz)
The Innocents
Island of Lost Souls
Jacob's Ladder
Kill List
Lair of the White Worm
Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural
Let The Right One In
Let's Scare Jessica to Death
Lifeforce
Lord of Illusions
Man Bites Dog
Marebito
Martin

Right At Your Door
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky
Stakeland
Suicide Circle (Suicide Club)
Them (ils)
Tombs of the Blind Dead
Trick 'R Treat
Troll Hunter
Tucker and Dale Vs Evil
The Uninvited
Uzumaki
Vampyres
The Vanishing
White Zombie
Who Can Kill a Child
Witchfinder General
-
Can you paste the top twenty?
it's listed alphabetically
-
Most of those are pretty arty films.
-
The Mothman Prophecies seems like kind of weird choice. I remember it getting middling reviews and then it was more or less forgotten. Are people starting to like it now in retrospect, or did I just miss everyone liking it the first time around?
-
well the title is alternative, so these are horror nerds
in addition to having a ufology love, i also have a cryptozoological interest so The Mothman Diaries appealed to me for being a really good telling of the "legend" of the mothman. Most of what happens in the film is reflected in the lore of the creature.

Your two YouTube links are now non-existing videos. What movies were they?
-
the second one was The House That Bled to Death
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJRz3HFNP_M
the first one was a mexican short film which was really fucked up about a cop that killed a kid and was haunted by guilt with some wonderful imagery
