Title: Hotline Miami - Kicking down doors and busting in faces
Post by: BobFromPikeCreek on October 24, 2012, 08:34:38 AM
Dude, this game is awesome. It's a very methodical game in that you have to stop and think about what you're about to do when you enter a room - you're super vulnerable and one hit will drop you - but when you're in the action it's fast paced and intense. Something about this game feels like the way fights happen in Quentin Tarantino movies.

Oh, and the soundtrack is wicked.

This game looks totally awesome but this is NOT for me what with the crushing difficulty and all. I'll take My Little Pony: Barnyard Buddies for 3DS instead

It's really good. Made it to the credits earlier today but there's a few more epilogue levels I think.

No idea how to get good scores or what flexibility even is.

Ha, yeah that's what I'm wondering too. Every level I get flexibility of 0.

Was recommended this when I bought Retro City Rampage (Didn't really dig RCR all that much) on Steam. Looks pretty cool, reminds me of a Net Yaroze game I used to have.

edit: Game was Psychon

Love that it's hard but never punishing. You revive almost immediately and it's pretty generous with checkpoints.

This game is so good on the later levels. When everything is going right you get this wicked rush. It's kinda disturbing how satisfying it is to feel like a hyper efficient murder machine.

Like the shifting of the screen to create a drugged effect when you start at your apartment. Like the random little changes on retrying a level.

I am not sure what flexibility is either, but I normally get a decent score on it every level. My highest level grade so far is B-, but I've only done four or five of the stages. I saw a pot of water boiling on a stove in a level and wondered if I could use it. Yup! Killed that last guy with boiling water.
Title: Re: Hotline Miami - Kicking down doors and busting in faces
Post by: fistfulofmetal on October 27, 2012, 05:02:32 AM
flexibility is probably your ability to kill with multiple weapons instead of just using one.
Title: Re: Hotline Miami - Kicking down doors and busting in faces
Post by: BobFromPikeCreek on October 27, 2012, 05:23:06 AM
Yeah. I ignored guns for the first while because I thought that would be better, but as soon as I started using guns my flexibility went up.

Game has that sense of being able to beat a level even if you've failed ten times in a row. Finally got past this one stage and unlocked the samurai sword.

The hit detection in this is really poor, which keeps me from enjoying it as much as I could have. Music is fantastic though (though a few songs are definitely anachronistic, like the one mnml track that plays in some of the levels), the highlight being the club stage.

All you gotta do is pull the enemies near the elevator so when SWAT shows up you're right by the door. Yeah, it isn't creative but it's easy.

I did the same, I love a game that still requires you to use exploits like that to finish a level. Real old school gaming.
Title: Re: Hotline Miami - Kicking down doors and busting in faces
Post by: tiesto on November 26, 2012, 10:01:34 AM
Also the lasers have line of site through the windows, but you are safe if you move past the window when the lasers aren't over it. As soon as I saw the "chapter complete!" message I hightailed it to the stairs avoiding the lasers, that's how I finally did it.

I love the horse mask, that's the one I use.

yeah, but at the same time I have no idea how the scoring system works.

Once level I stood in a doorway with a knife, lured guards in, and kept slashing.  Between the door knocking them down and the knife, I cleared out about 10 people (+2 dags) and got an A+ for the mission.

I agree that the hitboxes are tiny, but I kinda like that uncertainty going into missions.  When I mess up, it's funny.  When I success, it's fucking awesome.

Oh wow, I have a friend from there! Also btw the puzzle pieces... do I have to beat the level again or can I simply collect the piece and then exit out of the level? I didn't even realize there were puzzle pieces in the game.

I have no idea. Having to collect puzzles pieces while speedrunning your way through buildings with hyper precision is a really strange design decision. It's counter-intuitive to say the least.
Title: Re: Hotline Miami - Kicking down doors and busting in faces

You can finish the level and then collect the puzzle pieces after everyone is dead before you get into your car.

You do have to finish the level. If you quit mid-mission after collecting the puzzle piece, you will lose it.

I can't get Steamworks to work at all... like I'll select to have it enabled, but no achievements pop up (still says I received them in my steam profile) nor can I shift+tab. Had one serious crash bug so far, after beating the first part of the final level, and going up the stairs the game totally froze my computer, forcing a hard reset. Most of the bugs I've found are with the sloppy hit detection.
