Ubisoft has their Uplay thing and don't typically use Steamworks, but sometimes third party sellers like Amazon sell Steam keys instead of regular old serial keys.

I'll probably get the game down the road on PC too.  It's looking great.

Masterful how it wastes no time setting up the next Season of Assassin's Creed.  And how there isn't a choice.
[close]

What I like about the series is that there's the Desmond story and then the individual Altair-Ezio-NativeAmericanDude story.  The Desmond one is fun for the intrigue junk; hard to take seriously.  Also, Desmond's face looks totally different from Brotherhood (and 1 and 2).

I wont be able to play on anything other than the vita realistically - but given all 4 of my memory cards are full, i'm toying with just buying this as it's likely going to be some 2 gig monster.

Plus then the wife can play it seeing as she's finished most the others.

I wasn't thrilled with AC1 either.  AC2 is much better.  Never did finish it and might get that PS3 compilation of all three AC2 games but ACIII+Liberation is probably more than enough.

Some of the missions are really poorly designed and instructed. And the controls feel even more automated than in prior games. I like the game but for a big budget game it doesn't feel as polished as I would hope. Still early though.
Title: Re: Ass Creed III
Post by: brob on November 01, 2012, 12:56:08 AM
the opening is really annoying. they give you the shortest missions possible and interject small, flow breaking cut-scenes after each one. Yay, you walked up the stairs onto the deck. cut scene! now walk up to the captain. CUTSCENE.

I always want to like these games, but have such a hard time doing it. I enjoyed brotherhood, especially the optional crypts where I felt sneaking was good and fun. The rest of the time I'm usually just fantasizing about playing thief.  :-\
Title: Re: Ass Creed III
Post by: Stoney Mason on November 01, 2012, 02:20:40 AM
The thing is I really like the game. It's just frustrating when you have to do a mission 3 or 4 times because you don't understand what is expected of you instead of just being able to get it right the first time.

Post by: bork on November 01, 2012, 09:11:47 AM
Didn't play more of ACIII, but played a bit more of ACIII Liberation last night.  I can see the outfit-changing system being very annoying- when you are dressed in your "noblewoman" clothes, you can't do parkour and are limited in other abilities.

There was also already an escort mission  :yuck where the NPC I was leading apparently couldn't hop over a fence and instead decided to go run off to another area of the map.   :-\  But I'm still having fun with it.

Post by: cool breeze on November 02, 2012, 02:33:54 AM
Did they change the horse riding to make it better? and is it even necessary?

I'm playing Brotherhood now and it's mostly great but the horse riding is pointless and bad.  It's little thing like how in Shadow of the Colossus and Red Dead Redemption, you can be running, call your horse, and he'll catch up and you can mount him without stopping.  In Brotherhood, you call the horse and he comes to where you called it and stops, so you too need to stand and wait for him.  Speed/travel wise it's pretty inconsequential when you're running speed isn't much slower.  It's just a weird addition to Assassin's Creed 2.

If AC3 has more open terrain, I can see horse riding actually matter.

Just got past the Boston Tea Party... still lacking an interesting protagonist. Haytham Kenway > Connor.

i hope this series gets its comeuppance one day.   Its what I think of when I think of smoke+mirrors game design.  Jerks you off with easy gameplay and nice graphics (but shitty framerate and only nerds care about that, amirite) and a "complex" story.

i got to connor and just stopped playing. kind of bored wit hthe game which sucks because I loved playing as Haythum. He didn't seem like a "bad guy" like the other main characters have, he was just a normal kind of guy and I liked hte idea of the grassroots nature of it.

I'm pretty far into this (Sequence 9) and having mixed feelings. The setting is fine, the story sucks, Connor is a terrible protagonist (game would be 10x better with Haytham as the main character), the game is absolutely horrible at explaining anything, it's glitchy as fuck and like 2/3 of the missions are godawful. Despite all this, it's still a pretty fun game and the mechanics remain solid and entertaining. Tomohawking dudes in the face never stops being awesome, the easy auto-platforming still looks pretty cool most of the time and my OCD side still loves collecting everything (aka it's more AC). It's probably one of my least favorite games in the series (Bro>AC2>AC3=Rev>AC1) but I'm having a decent time.

Oh, and give me an entire game of naval missions, those are awesome.

It's sort of a mess of a game. Within it are the elements of a truly great game. But for lots of reasons its a very uneven experience and a shockingly poorly explained one. Literally there are parts of the game I don't understand. You just have to do it a whole bunch to figure some things out. Which is not the way a mainstream game should be.

It's an enjoyable mess imo.

I compare this game to Borderlands 2 which is refined fix of everything in Borderlands 1. That's a really good sequel. This is a game that adds in a lot of stuff but most of it isn't refined and it still hasn't fixed a lot of the core issues with the series that have been in there since the first and second game.

I'll stand by the fact that I think its a good game and an ambitious one even but for all the talk of how long it was in development and how many people worked on it, its a messy messy game. Another good comparison would be Red Dead Redemption which also was a bit of a messy game but they got a ton more right. They delivered on their ambition by comparison.

I just borrowed a copy of this and it's a god damn fucking mess, even with the patch that just went live. Horrible player messaging, inexplicable insta-death instances, idiot buddy AI, the list goes on and on. It's like they didn't do any usability testing whatsoever.

Just the worst player messaging ever. Incredibly confusing. Shitty missions where you walk from cutscene to cutscene. HORRIBLE ending. Patrice is crying somewhere.

I've tried to pick this up again but honestly I don't think I will finish it unless I make a beeline through the main quest. The game is baffling to me at this point since I have forgotten everything. There are a billion icons on the map. I have no idea what they do. The missions are as confusing as ever. I forgot how overly automated the controls were in general. And there are all this little side activities that are so poorly integrated and messaged that I have no idea what is going on. This series must be utterly baffling to newcomers.

I feel like the whole thing needs a big reboot already.  Taking such a long break and coming back to it has really given me a new perspective on where this series is going wrong. Far Cry 3 was fun. This isn't.

Title: Re: Ass Creed III
Post by: Stoney Mason on February 19, 2013, 08:09:04 PM
I thought I had outgrown this because I normally don't do it anymore but the only reason I'm still playing is because I spent $60 bucks on it at launch and because its this really big budget title so I want to see the spectacle of it to a degree and and where the money went. But its certainly not because I'm enjoying the game at all  so that's not a good sign at all certainly. It's like I need to squeeze some value out of it.

This game is also an indictment of a certain philosophy that is rampant that you need to keep adding shit in sequel after sequel. Instead of them adding all this shit, I wish they would just fix their game. A smaller scope and a more fun game would be so much better.

What if I told you that the series has always been like this but you're just now noticing it?  :lol  This series has been off the mark (but frustratingly close to it) from beginning to end.

I really wish we got the medieval stealth game we thought AC1 would be.   That sounded fun.   I can't believe they squeezed out 7 of these games (1, 2, 2-2, 2-3, 3, PSP, Vita) in one gen.  That has to be a record for a brand new IP to start fresh and get 7 iterations/releases in one gen.

I don't disagree the series has always been this way. I've always felt it was a bit over-rated. I just thought AC 3 would be the one where they would actually fix at least some of its issues.

Playing some more today. I feel like every mission is purposely poorly designed and instructed to pad out the gameplay. It happens too often to be a coincidence. I feel like they think figuring out what you are supposed to be doing is "gameplay".
