Though I think they're on par with each other I gotta give it to Sanjuro.
Yojimbo is a blend of different genres (western mostly) but Sanjuro feels slightly better written, better cinematography, photography, editing, and the final duel between Sanjuro and Muroto. On the other hand, I think Yojimbo is a better drama.

I haven't watched them in ages, but I remember preferring Seven Samurai.
-
Seven Samurai is fantastic but it's so long that I can't just plop down and watch it. I have to dedicate time to it. What are your thoughts on Zatoichi?
-
I don't remember much from it. I watched most of these movies in a very short period of time and they tend to blend into each other.
-
Have you guys watched his non-samurai films like Ikiru?
-
High and Low is my favorite Akria Kurosawa film. I love all of his postwar Noirs like Sleeping Dogs and the like but High and Low with it's one room first half is probably my favorite with Musashi's acting and Kurosawa's ability to keep it all riveting though not much happens beyond just conversations and stalking around a living room.

I'm gonna disagree. I prefer Yojimbo's pacing, the action scenes, the characters, and overall plot. I agree that cinematographically/visually etc yes Sanjuro is better but if you're asking which i'd rather pop in my DVD player right now it would be Yojimbo.
Have a gif of them laughing hysterically, then going,"ssshhhhhhhh", then realizing their captive is laughing with them so he quietly go back into the closet? :lol

-Dreams is pretty trippy, but obviously disjointed.
-The Bad Sleep Well is really great
-The Lower Depths is good
-Ikiru is god-tier
-Stray Dogs is really great
-High and Low is really great
I've also seen several of his movies about Japanese warlords and emperors but not necessarily samurais.
-
I think Ikiru is his best film.
-
i had just watched sanjuro for the first time earlier this year, and while i haven't watched yojimbo since it was first released on bluray, i did like it a bit more, though i have no reason as to why. as a whole, it just felt better paced but the one quality yojimbo has over it is that i felt he was far more of a badass in the final act than he was in sanjuro.
-
RAN is easily my favorite film of his, followed closely by High and Low.
-
I'd probably take Yojimbo over Sanjuro, as well. Not a knock on Sanjuro, though.
-
I don't think I've seen Sanjuro, but Yojimbo is great, great stuff. Like others said, the pacing is much closer to modern standards than something like Seven Samurai. Plus Yojimbo is pretty funny iirc.
-
Sanjuro is funny as well, and like Yojimbo has more modern pacing.
-
Cool, will have to check it out.
-
Oh, earlier when I asked about Zatoichi I meant to change the discussion to samurai films in general. It's not a Kurosawa film, but I had seen it recently so it was on my mind. I've never seen many samurai flicks beyond Kurosawa's stuff. Any suggestions?

Hanzo The Razor
:teehee
but seriously, sleepy eyes of death, lone wolf and cub, taboo, there are like a billion Zatoichi films including ones where he meets Sanjuro, any of the 47 Ronin tellings tend to be good, you may also like the Jidaigeki genre which is typically feudal period dramas.
-
Samurai movies? Definitely Harakiri.
-
by the time you get to the 6th movie, Lone Wolf and Cub is basically the Crank 2 of Samurai Films

I saw a Hanzo the Razor movie, back in the days of boutique VHS rental shops. Good grief; that is some crazy stuff.

I watched that J–King Lear, and it was dull as fuck. Anything before Battle Royale was stale and decrepit, apart from the giant teddy bear bit in Akiria.
