Title: How the hell do you manage all of your online accounts?
Post by: G The Resurrected on November 11, 2012, 03:14:22 PM
I just rediscovered some old gmail accounts I had created to find they didn't work anymore. So now I'm scrounging around look at all of my old accounts that I've created at numerous websites to see if they still work. I've thus counted way more than I thought I originally had.

Storefronts:
179 accounts
Forums:
12 accounts
Gmail:
17 accounts
Other email:
5 accounts
Social:
8 accounts
Gaming:
12 accounts
Banking:
6 accounts
Job sites:
11 accounts
Other:
33 accounts
Adult oriented:
5 accounts

My question is how do you deal with all of these accounts? Its a bit ridiculous to say the least. Some of the accounts cross over into others, but most are separate. I can't even get my two main email accounts in order cause of all of the spam from stores and crap. I feel like I'm loosing the battle for content control and its getting to be a bit too much for me. If I could just grasp a bit more control with it all I might feel better, but right now I see the sea of emails and just give up. Not to mention I end up having to reset my passwords all the damn time on a lot of sites cause I can't remember what crazy ass password I end up creating.  :-\

This thread is created for all of us in the early stages of senility.

Basically I just use them ad hoc. If I chance upon a site that looks familiar I do a reset password to confirm if I had an account.

Well, for one thing, I don't have 179 storefront accounts...

I have a slip of paper in my desk with passwords written down on it.

By not registering for every thing out there? You don't even need to set up accounts since most storefronts support PayPal, Amazon, or Google Checkout, along with Guest / Anonymous Checkout.

I can't stand paypal its annoying cause I use two different address. One for billing and one for shipping shit to. But paypal doesn't let you distinguish between the two. Especially since most of the time when you use paypal it only show's your billing address. I buy a lot of stuff online! I wish amazon payments was accepted at more places.

I buy lots of stuff online, and more times than not it's stuff I only buy once from a store. I usually only use maybe 8-9 places regularly. But with every other place sending me shit mail I can't keep up with it all. I don't know how to nuke it all without missing out on deal emails and slightly interesting emails.

I'm about to just delete all emails and try and create filters for all of it in hopes to make my online life a bit easier to manage. I'm also setting up passwords to interchange between sites so I don't forget stuff. Got an excel document I'm filling out with all of the usernames/emails used for corresponding sites too.

Started using keepass to manage my passwords. That is if I can remember them in the first place.

Or you could just make a google doc. Even more convenient/lazy is to use one of those password vault programs like lastpass or keepass.

lol keep ass.

those things are annoying for web passwords - they need to be accessible to any device you might want to access the website from. Which means buying separate Windows, Mac and iOS versions, say. Then you have all the work passwords for machines on which you can't install anything...it's really tricky stuff. If you use something convenient like Evernote you have to worry about it being hacked or rendered inaccessible (their servers go down...) when you need it...

I'm more annoyed at all the passwords I have to keep track of for work.  Most of which require changing on a regular basis.

About once a week, someone at work coughs up their password because of Windows 'focus-stealing' - they open up our chat channel, then hit their email or whatever and start typing their password....then Windows forces the chat channel to the main open window and their p/w shows up there :lol

I have a couple usernames and a set of phrases I use which I then apply a formula too (same for all) which changes certain letters to numbers and capitals etc. No idea how many accounts I have but I have a good system and I've never been hacked or forgotten how to log into something.

I also have a far smaller number of accounts than u. What's the point in having so many emails for instance? I have 2 secure addresses with obscure providers. Security in obscurity etc. a gmail I main and ymail for junk sign ups.

What are the five adult-oriented accounts?  Also, WHY?

BangBros
Kink.com (love this place)
and a few exclusive ones that I will not share here, cause they are not part of any specific website that most people can get to.

DBAN is probably the best way to deal with these, save a bucket of acid.

I just came back to my main computer, abandoned for most of this year while I was in the USA, only to find my IPTorrents.com account is logged out and I have NO IDEA what my password was there. They're not accepting new registration either.  :'(

There's a "Lost password" link right on the homepage? If that doesn't work try: irc.iptorrents.com | +6697 | #iptorrents, #ipthelp.

Thanks, I may do that.

The Lost Password link only works if you have an email account registered with them, which I apparently deleted from their database in a fit of paranoia.

After losing my Steam account a few years back (forgot my password and it was tied to an email at my old ISP), I write everything down on a small notepad.

I also lost my original Steam account after forgetting the username, password, and the associated email address. These days I keep everything in an encrypted file.

I'm almost done with gathering up all of the sites so I can redo passwords and shit. OMG it was worse than I thought it was originally. I think that was a conservative number for some of those places. I didn't even realize how many other places I had signed up and only used once or twice to just leave it and forget about it.

I'd love if I could get my old aol email, ign handle, and older ISP email accounts (fuck you comcast) that would be cool to relieve the past.
