WAHH WAHH
Remember when Nintendo didnt want to release Super Mario Bros 2 Japan in the west because it looked exactly like the first Super Mario?
Remember when the first 5 or 6 Mario games were absolutely unique in style and presentation?
Well forget those days because Nintendo has managed to run 2D Mario to the ground. I haven't played NSMBU yet (dont plan to get a Wii U anytime soon) but from what I seen it recycles the same shitty style again. What's so NEW about it?
Sooner or later these 2D mario games wont sell anyone when even the worst nintendo fanboys has given up on the milking.
I hope NSMBU bombs.

More because of advances in technology than anything. Yeah, SMB and SMW were on the same consoles respectively as SMB3 and YI, but the former were launch games. All the rest can be attributed to upgrades in technology, which isn't really the case from NSMB Wii -> NSMB2.

Pretty good level design and amount of challenge. Also a world map and baby Yoshis.Sooner or later these 2D mario games wont sell anyone when even the worst nintendo fanboys has given up on the milking.
They'll always do decent numbers. I doubt they'll get 30 mil or whatever now.I hope NSMBU bombs.
NSMB2 is the one that really deserves to bomb if anything. But no game really deserves to bomb unless it's a completely ass entry in a major franchise (Sonic 2006 hey oh.)
They pulled that shit in NSMB2 also. Oh I'm missing a star coin in this level. Oh oops its impossible to get as equipped.
You could run on walls in SMW without that horse shit
Shiho Fujii and Mahito Yokota, the former worked on NSMB Wii and the latter really ought to know better [since he worked on Mario Galaxy].

Everything I can find says that he did.
I read on GAF that they like to make the New series music "familiar" aka copypasting for some nonexistent nostalgia. Can't scare off the casuals with them fancy new musics!
:yuck
Yokota will always be a bro, though. Nothing will ever take away his work on the Galaxies. They pulled that shit in NSMB2 also. Oh I'm missing a star coin in this level. Oh oops its impossible to get as equipped.

Not on any wall, just the ones that had the 45-degree half-blocks. Mini Mushroom let's you do it on any wall connected to the ground.
If NSMB2 had never come out (like it never should have) then there really wouldn't be much milking. A new game every three years, yeah, milkage central. ::)
NSMB2 is damning though. That one's definitely dripping in the white stuff.
WTF is Nintendo Zone? Does that require me to actually -go- somewhere to get exclusive content?
I've owned my 3DS for 3 months and I still have no clue wtf either Streetpass or Spotpass are.

Lol, that wasn't the reason.
Due to Lost Levels high difficulty and similarity to its predecessor, Nintendo of America chose instead to hire the Japanese developers to finish off and release this original designed "Mario 2" prototype, which has resulted in some confusion amongst fans as to which was "the real Mario 2", some siding with the former and others with the latter

Yes. Go to Gamestop to download that exclusive demo, breh!

I said that wasn't THE reason. And it wasn't. It was barely a secondary consideration.
The whole argument is dumb anyways, who cares what NoA thought back then? SMB2J was good enough for NCL and Miyamoto even if it looked "samey."
As for "new ideas," that's an entirely separate argument than "new graphical style." And the console NSMB games are full of new ideas. They use samey enemies, and world themes, and music, but almost every level introduces something new and or builds on something old.
whatever happened to "fuck this company"
everybody knows the reason why they didn't release SMB2 here was because it looked the same.

Without caring to verify it, I've thought since the days before the internet when I got my news from magazines that the reason we didn't get Super Mario 2 Japan was because they thought us American gamers were pansies who couldn't take the heat of the ramped up challenge, so they gave us Doki Doki Panic.

Interestingly, Takashi Tezuka is the missing piece of the Super Mario Bros. 2 puzzle. Following the success of Super Mario Bros. Tezuka and Miyamoto created a different game called Super Mario Bros. 2, which now known as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. This Super Mario Bros. 2 was similar graphically to the original game, but it much more difficult. So difficult that Nintendo of America was unconvinced it would do well in the US -- and that's when the idea to repurpose Doki Doki Panic came about.
