Title: I finally gots me an HDTV!
Post by: Oblivion on December 01, 2012, 10:11:39 PM
Woooooooooooo!

Yessiree, folks. I finally went ahead and decided to take the plunge and gots me one of them new fangled HDTVs all the kids are raving about nowadays. It's nothing amazing, though. It's a 22" 1080p Samsung of some sort, but it works.

Now...granted, I don't have any HD channels, or HD video game systems, or any HD movie players, but all that will be taken care of in due time.

I'm quite sad to say that Zeruda: Skyward Bored looks like absolute shit on this T.V. (though, oddly enough it looked about the same on my old SD CRT as well. It really is the most aliased AAA game I've ever seen, and have no idea why that is. Even more puzzling when you consider the pastel painting art style). Thankfully, and somewhat surprisingly, both SMG titles look great, so there's that at least.

So..uh, yeah high definition! Woo!

Check out Planet Earth on blu-ray.  Benchmark for HDTV video quality circa 2007!

Annihilated.  :'(

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I won't be getting a Wii-U until the price is at least under $200. Either that or when SMG3 releases Whichever comes first.

My first HDTV was a 32" CRT 1080i for $600 back in 2005.  Since it was a CRT, it weighed about 100 pounds.  I lived in a dorm then too so we had to lug this decent sized TV that weighed a shitload to people who lifted weights regularly to a back corner of my dorm up a couple floors of stairs and down a few halls.  I wound up selling it off for what seemed like pennies on the dollar to someone at the end of the school year just so I wouldn't have to deal with moving it again.  I don't even think they sell CRT HDTVs anymore and if they do, they shouldn't.

It's like playing the Wii U with two game pads.

Fuck I've already got a surplus of 1080p tv's in my other bedroom being unused. Granted they are technologically obsolete for me. First world problems!

Still don't have an HDTV. Don't have the money for a bigger model and anything under 40" seems like a waste.

32" is fine if you're in a small room.

Wow I just had this realization, that maybe the reason the wii sold so much was cause people couldn't afford new HDTV and a HD console.  :lol :lol :lol No wonder they defended that console so much.

My first HDTV was a 26 inch Westinghouse. I bought a cheap $20 rolling TV cart so I could roll it closer to the couch :lol

I'm still on a 37" Vizio from 2007. It's only 1366x768, but I can crank most of my PC games up to max settings at that res.

I think my first HDTV was in 2005 around the 360 launch.  I remember Project Gotham Racing 2 was the first thing I played on it, so it had to be before the 360.  Though, my parents had this massive DLP HDTV I rarely used.

A decade ago I was still buying RF adapters to play consoles on my 13" TV with mono sound.  Now I'm on a 46" 1080p TV, which is huge to me, but some friends consider it small  :S

the issues with eye strain are overblown from what I've read and mostly associated to office environments with improper lighting.

My room is always dark and there's no glare. I have my screen set to warm hue and the brightness is lower.

I don't deny that I'll probably need glasses when I get older but I don't think it's much of a big deal to me.

When you start to get macular degeneration caused by the eye strain you put yourself through at an early age. Remember I told you so!

That shit is gonna fuck you up.

Personally if your arm length away from your screen you should have a 20"-24" inch display. When I worked at Y! we had to go through a lot of extensive training for ergo. Extend your arm and measure how many arm lengths it is.  Each arm length equals 4-6 additional inches in screen size.

Has the color dimmed in it considerably over the years of usage? I'm so freaked out about my plasma I purchased this year. Its freaking beautiful. But I've already had so many issues with Borderlands 2 and image retention. I almost want to take it back or dump it to get a LED. Then I hear that over time the cells degrade and no longer keep accurate color representation.

Not at all, the picture looks just as great as it did back then. My parents got a 55" Samsung LCD for their livingroom last year and the picture quality doesn't compare to my plasma.

I had image retention problems too fir the first couple of months that I had it, but they all went away eventually. I was paranoid about that too. What brand is your tv?

I bought a "real" HDTV fairly recently, a Panasonic TX-42ST50 plasma. I had a 720p CRT before that, but I don't really consider it HD. Really happy with this Panny though, I stream HD stuff to it through my WDTV which all looks great. Haven't gotten a Blu-ray player yet. I also use the X360 on it of course, but it's not a slim so it's only running 720p over component.

I've got a 65E8000 Samsung, it's just stunning when watching movies. And the motion on it is incredible for games and 3d.

Borderlands 2 really screwed me up cause of its hud. Unfortunately my tv turns off specific image retention helpers when you have custom settings. So while I thought one of those helpers was on, it wasn't. So I have some image retention from the HUD of that game in the screen. But everyone tells me just wait it will go away eventually. I had the screen on snow and full image stuff for a week straight and it only reduced the retention. All this cause I played a hour or two in a row borderlands. So now I only play games with hud's that are opaque in nature, even then I'm super concerned. This tv is my baby and the center of my home theater.

Yikes. It should go away eventually. I don't know Samsung's reputation with plasmas though.

They won the accidental burn in challenge, and were listed with Panasonic as this year's HDTV shootout. That's why I went with it, plus it Kuro display tech has been in less and less Panasonic's which is what I really wanted.

Hopefully you're not too far away from it. Do you use it mainly as a PC monitor? I pretty much just gave away my first Bravia 32" HD set. I kinda liked just having a 32" set, my new Panasonic 50 is pretty overbearing to have sitting in my room but I was getting eye strain looking at my 32 from across the room so it had to be done.

We are HDTV soulmates Eel. Had the exact same history except the Westinghouse died and I was able to replace it with a 32" Insignia. Best Buy warranties :rock

Obliv you should have gotten in on those $99 deals on the PS 3D displays on Black Friday. I am using two on a multimonitor setup and they're great.

Upon further investigation my Vizio is a 1080p from '08

Heh, I was planning on getting a Westinghouse T.V. (which by the way is a company I never heard of until last week), but then I realized the Samsung was only $20 higher so I said what the hell.

I made the unfortunate decision to go to BB where they didn't have those deals. :(

Congrats, Oblivion.

Make sure you have all the proper cables and consoles set to the proper resolution.
