Title: I acquired Windows 8 - PLEASE HELP
Post by: Himu on December 03, 2012, 10:38:51 PM
 :o

So fast.

Is there any way to link my gmail with my Microsoft Hotmail? I already have, but I don't want to receive Hotmail email, because I don't use it, I want to use my gmail, but MS won't let me. Help?

Any general tips with W8?

Why isn't there a clock in metro mode and why is there no search in windows store?

I think you can use the regular search for the store (go to the bottom right corner then choose Search).

No idea about the lack of a clock.

I see. So does each metro app have its own bottom right menu? I assumed before that that search was for Windows but you're right, it is for the store.

I just don't get why they didn't include a clock on the Calendar tile. ??? Were they just high when they did that?

Other than the occasional aforementioned interface issue, Windows 8 is pretty swank. Installing Steam.

I dunno how it's sour. Right now I think, in terms of usability, this the best windows yet. Windows command shortcuts and making me hot in my pants.

Seriously dude, a start menu is pointless. Windows + C -> go to search and type it in. Takes 3 seconds. Or even better, Windows + Q. Shit hot. Haters owned. Enjoy your shitty start screen.

If you're already asking people to learn multiple shortcuts that were available with one mouse click you might as well just pack it in.
Title: Re: I acquired Windows 8 - PLEASE HELP
Post by: Himu on December 04, 2012, 01:32:24 AM
Nope. You can do it via mouse and it will take the same amount of time it took to reach start menu. There IS a start menu. You have two of them!. One is a mini start menu (metro), the other is a new overhead that puts files, apps, and setting in one thing. They literally have the same function as the start menu and not only that, it's FASTER than the start menu.
Title: Re: I acquired Windows 8 - PLEASE HELP
Post by: recursivelyenumerable on December 04, 2012, 03:55:01 AM
I'm not actually sure what you're asking with the first question but

* You can use any email as your "Microsoft ID", it doesn't have to be Hotmail/Outlook.com. Be warned that if you somehow end up with two different IDs there is AFAIK no way to merge them and this situation is fairly common and is arrrrggghhhh

* If you want to use the Mail app with Gmail you can set this up under the settings charm.

* You can also pipe your Gmail into Hotmail/Outlook.com if you want (this is different and not required for the thing above, which just uses Gmail directly)

also

* Yes for better or worse the search charm is the standard way to search even within apps - this takes a little while to get used to. It defaults to the app you're currently in (or "Apps" if you're on the desktop or in Start) or you can switch to a different app (which lets you quickly search multiple apps with the same search terms - you can right click & pin apps you want to search frequently so they're easier to get to). Also, Start and many apps (including the store) let you search by just typing from the front page.

* Yes the Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox "marketplaces" are all totally separate and buying stuff on one gets you jack on the other ones. Why? Cause Not Invented Here, that's why.

also a tip that makes mouse usage better for me, to use the charms I find it feels a lot better when I treat it is "swing around the corner" in one motion, rather than "move to the corner and hover and move down". So Search is the upper right corner, settings is lower right

When you are in the store, you can just begin to start typing and the search bar will come up. I had to look on-line to figure that one out.

I already sold my laptop that had Win 8 on it. I hated it and found myself reaching for my old HP w/ win 7 or my Ipad when I wanted to doodle around. I'm sure in a year when I buy another Black Friday laptop, Win 8 will be a much better experience.

Yeah you can change the password settings in settings charm -> PC settings -> Users (or search -> settings -> type "password" or win-W -> "password"), you can disable "password on wake" (which also disables the lock screen on wake) or set a PIN to just have a few digits to type.

btw the reason there's no clock visible everywhere is they want the apps to get ALL OF THE SCREEN EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING. which makes more sense on smaller screens than larger ones. the reason there's no clock specifically in the start screen is it would be pointless as going to the start screen is no easier or less disruptive than just bringing up the charms to see the clock.

Why do you keep defending this OS Himu?

I just upgraded from Vista to this. ??? It is basically W7 with a hefty amount of upgrades.

I agree that the MS failed at delivering information and tutorials on how to use their new fancy OS. but once you get used to it, I don't see how anyone could have a complaint.

I am more annoyed by the obvious stuff that are missing/not implemented that they will add by next year.

Stuff like more app sizes when sideloading (fifty fifty is a MUST), multiple apps running on dual or more monitor support, better connect the desktop to the start menu (charms bar is useless while on desktop) and god knows what I am forgetting right now.

And BTW himu, I dunno if you know this but Windows Defender (formerly known as Security Essentials) is now built in the OS.
Title: Re: I acquired Windows 8 - PLEASE HELP
Post by: Himu on December 04, 2012, 04:05:31 PM
Awesome, I was going to dl windows security essentials later today.

What I REALLY  like about W8 is how it finally brings the whole OS together. Windows in past versions was very scattered. In order to find cpu and ram usage info you had to ctrl+alt+del and then go to performance. If you want to look at programs installed you had to go to fucking control panel, programs. If you wanted to view power options and all that shit, you had to find that in a specific way too.

Now it's all under one menu. Just hit windows key + x or go to the start menu hover and right click and you get a quick access menu that has all that shit in one menu.

:bow Windows being an actual OS instead of this random smish smash of shit.

The fact it does this for applications, settings, and more via charm bar is even better.

You seem to be going out of your way to de-windows8-ifying windows 8. Why did you even bother? What actual improvements are you happy about except native iso loading? (I've used both Win8 and Win 7 and the speed difference is negligible.) Right from the very start of this thread you've been battling the Os, yet continually you defend it. It boggles my mind

These are not workarounds to problems. ??? I legitimately think it's better than past Windows OS and far more functional and faster to access crap. In order to uninstall programs in the past, i had to go to control panel -> programs. Now all I have to do is hit windows key + x and click on programs. I see that as a legitimate improvement.

Seems you're catching feelings for no reason because you have something against W8.

yeah, app search works just as before. the thing that's different that a lot of people dislike is that settings results are now on a separate page from apps results, so it takes an extra click (or knowing the win-W shortcut that takes you directly there) to search settings. it's arguably a regression from 7, but not from Vista which didn't include settings in start menu search anyway.

I kinda ignore any extreme opinion these days. If I don't see a fair consideration of pros n cons at play fuck it

I have it installed on my retina MacBook and people bitching about no start button are pathetic.  I muuuuuch prefer having keyboard shortcuts to do shit, and having start be mapped to the command key on my MacBook is awesome.

Eh drunk and it was new lol. I seem to be missing like 40 gigs from my ssd for some reason but was in no state to optimize. I kinda like it so far after gutting the start screen, but it does seem like they fixed a few things that weren't broken.

Is there a way to set it Where it doesn't display your name?

i don't know, ask drinky about that one. as for missing 40 gigs, check c drive and see if there's a windows.old folder.

I don't think there's any setting to specifically disable or change the username displayed in Start. You'd have to either change the name associated with your Microsoft account to some pseudonym, create a new separate Microsoft account for your PCs (warning: if you ever decide you want to merge them back together, well you can't), or switch to a local account (which would mean you'd have to register with each app separately. You can switch back and forth from local <-> connected account though it is a bit of a PITA). You could do any of this from Settings charm -> Change PC Settings -> Users.

maybe it doesn't use a name if you do a local account

It just uses whatever you named the account. Of course you could also name a connected account anything you want too (but I'm not sure what the ramifications would be).

I can definitely see why someone would want there to be a setting specifically for this, unfortunately there isn't AFAIK so you're stuck with picking one of the less than perfect options I outlined in my post.

Steam Launcher app was released- free- essentially the same thing as Steam Pin or whatever- so check that out. Having steam tiles on the start screen is so badass

Sweet, can you see sales on it?

Yeah deleted the win.old. I can hopefully mess around tomorrow and find the other 40 haha. Dangerously close to just saying fuck it. Have a 3tb main drive so not too worried. I think I've done more research after buying all components and it's kind of biting me!

Will look into just adjusting settings, thanks.

loved W8 much more after installing POKKI and getting a HTC 8X

W8 OS is almost essential if u own a W8 phone

One thing I would change about W8 is defaulting to classic mode if you don't have a touchscreen monitor, tiles kinda suck without a touchscreen

First SNES emulator.

Gonna be nice for RT/Surface once they add USB support.
