It was all downhill after the Dragon Warrior issue.
Die!

I started with issue #3, and had a subscription up to around #100.

I like that he walks out of the room looking at the NES. When Nintendo was good.
Nester looks way too old. He has a kid? :o Where is Howard? :'(

Howard's the father. :o
-
they should make more cartoons about developmentally challenged adults and their autistic children.
-
Turning off the light and leaving Nintendo behind. :smug
-
Howard is actually on Facebook. He posts prototypes and stuff.

I loved this magazine as a kid during the NES era

Video game magazines in the 80s and early 90s were so totally rad n' awesome.
Then the web evolved and made them irrelevant. :'( It didn't help that the quality of the mags went down, too- I remember when magazines were filled with pics of new games, strategies, tips, maps, etc. Instead of being page after page of shitty "games journalism." :yuck
-
totally- Nintendo Power from the NES/SNES era were the shit- stuff started going downhill after that imo
-
Still have my silver covered mega man x issue somewhere. also, pretty sure iI had that Mario rpg poster on my wall.
-
EGM was better.
-
I have most issues I think. It's a spotty before the 90+ isues from when my brother was the subscriber. Since then I just kept getting them for collection sake alone, because I'm dumb.
-
gayyyy
-
How about that Sega Visions magazine? Good ol' Niles Nemo. Guys? Anybody?
-
EGM was better.
Also Hsu and Chan > comic in OP.
:bow

All I remember from my Sega Vision days is gameboy trolling and waking up with a 32X and wondering where it all went wrong :-\

Well as a child I didn't know any better so FUK OFF #mynostalgia
-
Gamefan was the SHIT in the 90's...

I can depressingly confirm that Nester is not too old to be canonical. :sob
It's true this made me nostalgic for being 8 and getting the first 2-3 years of Nintendo Power. Then I realized that was 25 years ago and shot myself. I am posting this as a ghost.
Also, did Nester name his kid after the NES MAX? Cause that's pretty baller.

Sometimes I wonder how Nester got laid in the first place. What a cigarillo.
gay dad
Great minds.
-
You know what was rad? The full page maps of levels. :-[
-
it's kinda sad how the web ruined the magazines.

I remember sending Sega Visions all kinds of cheat codes from other magazines and then winning free games as thanks. :lol
-
i still have all my old nintendo powers, sega visions, and those shitty nes multigame strategy guides in my parents basement :lol
also have my old squaresoft ogopogo examiners; wonder if those are worth any money

My favorite game mags were OPM, EGM, and Gamefan.
As a kid, I'd read the occasional Gamepro as well.
When OPM died out, it never had this kind of fanfare and its story was far more sad than Nintendo Power's ever was. Nintendo Power has been irrelevant for years. Meanwhile, OPM was in the midst of a huge quality increase and the rug was cut out from under them by Ziff Davis. The fact that monstrosity PSM took the mantle to become the official PS mag was the day game mags died.

This mag was nuts. :bow

Gamefan was fucking terrible. The only thing it was good for is giving people warning about how awful weeaboos were to become later on.
-
I mostly liked gamefan for the import pics.
-
gamefan was full of fanboys who raved about EVERYTHING. every fucking game got a high score; if a game was a good port than it didnt matter how it actually played. they even gave 90s to fucking bubsy 3d :lol then the 2d vs 3d debates came along and they whined about every series making the transition and cried about the good ol days. fuck that weeaboo bullshit.
-
But they had the best pictures!
-
Doug Halverson did 2 cover stories on a shitty game I was helping design. 2 cover stories. 2. The game was awful. 2.

WHAT WAS THE GAME
-
I hated 90s graphic design back in the 90s, but I've come to kind of like it
-
Gamefan was awesome. EGM was starting to suck by that point. Gamefan may have been drug fueled optimism, but they did enjoy games for gaming. EGM got to a point where it was just tons of ads and a bunch of people who sounded like they resented having their career tied to gaming.

In the 90's? Really? EGM only reached that point in the late 2000's.

WHAT WAS THE GAME

Yeah, the 90s. It began at the very early parts of the 32-bit/54 gen. Gamefan may have gone weeaboo, but EGM went the other way.

HAHAHAHAHAHA never seen that before. so, so fitting
-
I thought Gamefan fucking sucked ass. After reading this thread, it all became clear to me why it sucked like it did: http://www.the-nextlevel.com/tnl/threads/33808-The-GameFan-history-thread

i thought egm was very passionate in their reporting. egm 100 is still my favorite game mag.
-
New EGM is horrible though, the old 90's EGMs with the 500+ pages were good.
-
We are talking about 90s Egm.
-
Before my time! I was a babe or too young to read game mags when Nintendo Power was in its prime years and by the time I could read I'd get a Game Pro.
-
When I was in elementary school, I had a friend who subscribed to Nintendo Power. Once he was done with them, he lent them to me. It was pretty interesting seeing all of those B-level NES games that they would cover. I wound up remembering the names of a lot of them and when I got an NES emulator years later, I had to play those games. Turned out, most of them sucked ass.
-
i read those strategy guides that came with renewals like they were the fucking bible
-
Holy shit, they made Hsu and Chan BOOKS?
Bought!
