Title: Anyone want to start a book club?
Post by: Groogrux on December 15, 2012, 12:15:59 PM
Has anyone thought about doing this?  I'm always on the prowl for something to read next, and I thought it would be cool to have suggestions and then go over it together to see what other people though.  Would anyone else be interested?

I would be interested, but the last book I read in completion was over 4 years ago. I get so bored with reading, usually cause the subject matter is not as engaging as my imagination can be.

As long as none of it is science fiction or medieval fantasy, sure.

The last time I tried this I couldn't resist finishing the book ahead of everyone else.

I would be down for this. I try to keep up with recently released books of note (well, I check Amazon's Books of the Month list anyway), although I typically fail to actually read any of them. Maybe we could read some books that recent and popular.

And easy to find a bootleg epub of online. :shh

If it's a boring book, I don't think anyone should hold back and say so.  I don't like suffering through boring reads either.

Why not make the pace easy enough for everyone and just talk about it at the end of a certain time frame, according to how big the book is?

As long as none of it is science fiction or medieval fantasy, sure.

We could always vote on what we wanted to read, that way everyone is (mostly) satisfied.  I don't neccesarily want to read a big series of fantasy books or "the next Game of Thrones" series, but would you be down for something that wasn't too wild in one direction or the other every once in a while?

I'm right there with you!

---

My thing is that I hate that I don't read enough.  Reading is a great way to expand the mind and it's something that I want to proudly pass down to my son as well.  How can I say that I think he should do something if I don't do it enough myself?

What I'm proposing is some good, stand-alone novels.  NY Times Bestsellers are great and maybe a few classics that we have never touched on.

How many people should we have if we really want to do this thing?  Is five good enough or should we wait for at least ten or fifteen?

Sure.  I'd be down then.

I would assume that fiction is the category that we would want to read in, right?

Honorable Mention:

LIFE OF PI*, by Yann Martel* (11)
THE CASUAL VACANCY~, by J. K. Rowling~ (19)

(*Denotes Stand-Alone novel, +Denotes Part of a Series, ~ Denotes Possible Chick-Flick/Mommy Porn)

Suggestions are open!

of that list, I'd suggest Gone Girl.

Quote
Marriage can be a real killer.
One of the most critically acclaimed suspense writers of our time, New York Times bestseller Gillian Flynn takes that statement to its darkest place in this unputdownable masterpiece about a marriage gone terribly, terribly wrong. The Chicago Tribune proclaimed that her work “draws you in and keeps you reading with the force of a pure but nasty addiction.” Gone Girl’s toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn.
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?
As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?
With her razor-sharp writing and trademark psychological insight, Gillian Flynn delivers a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller that confirms her status as one of the hottest writers around.

I'd like to suggest for our next book to delve into:

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY~, by E. L. James

Depending on how our first book club book thread works out it could prove very interesting since we're mostly males here.

Also another suggestion

The Night Circus, Erin Morgenstern

I would have a hard time reading Fifty Shades of Grey after watching this:

All I would ever hear is Gilbert Gottfried...
