Title: Thread for people who are playing Persona 4 to talk about Persona 4 and P4A
Post by: fistfulofmetal on December 16, 2012, 12:03:53 PM
it seems a number of us have been playing Persona 4 all of a sudden. I'm playing the OG PS2 version.

I finished Yukiko's Castle and now moving onto the next part of the story.

I appreciate that the characters here seem to be intelligent and are logically talking about the situation they are in based on the evidence they have. And the interactions between the various characters are pretty entertaining. The scene where Yosuke and Charlie eat all of the girls lunch was hilarious "My tofu... :( "

Persona 4 is pretty amazing. I'm not sure Atlus fully understands why it was great though. At least those involved with Golden, Arena and the anime didn't really understand it (though subsequent fanservice cash-ins rarely do...).

Catherine gives me some hope for Persona 5.

What's there to understand? It's about uguu power of friendship. Nothing exclusive to Persona... the old Personas were better.

Basically I found P3P to be far less simplified combat wise, P4 it's just one physical type.

Diluted for simpletons.

Had a bit of a panicked moment at the end of the first dungeon. Went to the top floor and made it to the boss in one go. I figured there be some spot to save or an opportunity to leave the dungeon after getting to the top so I entered the last door. Nope, straight into the boss fight were I got whooped. Thank God it let me start over at the same floor and I used that item to peace out. If I had gotten a game over and lost all that dungeon progress, man, I dunno if I would have gone back to this game. At least for a while

Damn, I screwed up a request. There's one dude that gives trades you a mop for a weapon (it has the same stats as your weapon, so it's okay). I thought it was just a joke weapon, but then later on there's a guy that needs the mop but I already sold it and there's no way to get another one. At least there's no trophy tied to doing all the requests, but still, it's annoying since I'd been doing them all. I guess the upside is that I can stop being paranoid about missing a request, since I already have.

So anyway PROTIP: Don't sell the mop.

Almost to the end of Rise's dungeon now.

It seems fusing is really the only way to keep all your personas at a decent level. i'm never swapping them around or using them all enough so some tend to fall behind. by fusing you take two and make one that's usually going to end up higher (thanks to the social link XP bonus) and it tends to have combined powers.

Title: Re: Thread for people who are playing Persona 4 to talk about Persona 4
Post by: Himu on December 17, 2012, 07:26:28 PM
When playing SMT:

1. Never get "close" to a demon. Always make sure your demon party is up to task depending on the floor, or even dungeon. In order to gain new abilities and demons (persona, in this case) you must fuse.

2. The logic between fusion is that each demon has its own unique type or 'race'. In SMT proper, Angel is an Divine type demon, for the purpose of Persona series, demons which are called Persona, have Arcana. In Persona, Angel is a Justice type Persona. In order to make Angel you need x level of two different Justice Personae.

3. To create a specific demon, you must know fulfill level requirements. You will know what the level requirements are by looking at the demon in question, if it is blurred out, and then see what level is required. The game will tell you.

4. Each demon has a specific ingredient, i.e. this demon, or that demon, to make the persona. Some don't have heavy requirements, but if you want to make a Metatron or extremely high level demon, you are going to have to go through a specific amount of steps. Sometimes on rare occasions the fusion WILL mess up so always save before you fuse.

Addendum (basics of playing SMT):

Cards contain persona and each dungeon has a specific set of demons you fight. Depending on the situation you will need to switch up your persona roster. If the majority of the demons are weak to wind, get a wind based Persona or two. Always cover your bases, so that you have Persona that protect from whatever strengths the enemies throw at you, this includes death magic.

It's suggested to try to level up all slinks, even with characters who may not interest you because this increases their potency in battle as well as leveling up your Arcana types. For example, Chie's arcana is The Chariot. By leveling up Chie's slink, you are by leveling up Chariot. This means you can get better Chariot Persona. By balancing your slinks, you are by also helping yourself to a wider palette of peronsa to fuse and create.

Fusion is the hallmark of SMT demon collection. You fuse to make whatever demon you need at the time, or that you think you will need eventually. Any Persona you make is entered into your compendium, which allows you to buy and rebuy any demons you discard or fuse. Need to make something that requires your Jack Frost? No biggie, save your current Jack Frost so you retain levels, spells, abilities in the Compendium, then save the game, fuse, go to compendium history, re-order that Jack Frost, you got your persona back for a select fee. The more powerful the Persona the more it costs to get them back from the compendium.

With S links, compendiums, fusion, and roulette card shuffle, you have a lot of options to get ahead in P3/4.
Title: Re: Thread for people who are playing Persona 4 to talk about Persona 4
Post by: Joe Molotov on December 17, 2012, 07:54:14 PM
Not really. It takes like 3 hours just to get the story started. That was the biggest problem with P4. IIRC, P3 just threw you right into the action.

P3 still took like an hour to actually get to the dungeon, but yeah it's even more so in P4.

And since you can buy back any persona you've previously held, my strategy is to just fuse the hell out of everything. The only thing that sucks is trying to get personas with specific abilities for Margaret, but you can use an FAQ for that.

I basically beat the game... just need to grind and struggle through this last final final dungeon.

I'm really happy I played this game. I never would have unless I had watched the Giantbomb Endurance Run and found the writing/story to be so interesting.

Playing through it I've been consistently impressed with how the game managed to make the two parts of the game feel connected. What you do outside dungeons can and will directly affect your fighting inside dungeons. I really like that because it adds that extra layer of depth and also adds purpose to the S.Links.

the main elemental moves are pretty easy to remember. the buffs and debuffs can be difficult tho.

when fusing, you know only the Red moves are the ones that are inherited right? and they are random so if you don't get a good roll you can back out and reselect the personas to re-roll.

i can hear the menu noises from Nocturne and Persona 3+4 ringing in my mind 24/7 from constantly re-rolling fusions.  Even better when they introduced tri-fusions.

I think it would make the game significantly easier if you pick your own, since most of the time I compromised some shit with some good skills.  It would be nice to have something in between the slot machine and choosing skills directly.   But for Persona fans in general, it probably doesn't matter cause it's about the story, i guess.

yosuke, chie and yukiko, bro.

Yosuke's late game wind attacks are consistently the most powerful thing that gets thrown out there
Chie is a physical monster in the late game. Tarukaja + Power Charge + God Hand = Totes OP and has the ice damage under control.
Yukiko is the main healer and has strong fire.

This allows you to have Electricity as your main and can dabble in light/dark and buffs, debuffs.

My copy should be here Thursday.

Also, I'm glad I never played the PS2 version of P4 because now new Chie is the only Chie for me.  :P

too late breh. already finished the game. didnt have to worry about any of that. beginner :bow2

playing P4A... I assume some of these new characters are from Persona 3?

Also, the way this game is structured, I hope they attempt to make it all make sense in some form. Because it straight up doesnt. I will give them the benefit of the doubt because P4, for being as wacky as it was, managed to explain itself pretty well.

i was hoping i would be able to get into P4A but fighting games are pretty much impossible for me. i had the same problem with Mortal Kombat. i find them so hard to understand and approach. i'm on this fight with the sister of Margaret and she's just dominating me over and over and i don't even know what i'm doing wrong or how to approach beating her.

The best way is to break it down. Look at your defensive options in combat--blocking, dashing, parry (or w/e is available, haven't played P4A.)  And look at offensive stuff-- normal moves + specials + supers.   Figure what you aren't doing well-- maybe you're not blocking because you're trying to spam offense too much.  Maybe the CPU has a slow move you can dash away from and punish.  See what the CPU is doing that you're constantly getting hit by and figure out a way around.

play a bunch of matches in a row paying attention to that stuff and you'll eventually get it.  Patience!

57+ hours in, I'm about to start the December dungeon. I'm trying to max out a few last S.Links before I go in, including Margaret's. I pretty much blew off Death, the Tutor, Saki's Brother, and Kanji (sorry breh :( ) but I think I'll be able to max the rest by the end of December. I'll be cutting it close on the Fellow Athletes one.

I took a lot of pics from P4 for some reason, so now it's PIC DUMP TIME! Here's the P4G-exclusive fanservicey beach event. It's got all the P4 gals running around in bikinis natch, but there's a little something for ladies too.  :-*

You should definitely give 3 a try, fistful. Loved the atmosphere in the game, even if it's more of a PITA to play through. But you can get the portable version where you can control your party members manually instead of relying on AI.

I just started Persona 4 via emulation. I'm basically just past the tutorial stuff and now in control. I like it so far. I like how earnest the Japanese are in both their storytelling and their game mechanics. I tried playing Persona 3 last year but it didn't click with me. I'm enjoying this more so far.

Some of the bosses feel random. Like they have a set of attacks but it doesn't feel like they always do them in a predictable manner which is frustrating. I feel like I can either get lucky during a boss fight or I need to grind and over level for it.

Of course it could be that I just suck. But those are my initial thoughts about 12 hours in.

edit: I just beat a creature I was stuck on for a good bit because he has this attack that can wipe out my entire party. But for some reason after fighting him like 5 or 6 times and getting wiped out by it, he didn't use it once during a fight for some reason. And it was a long fight so he had an opportunity to do it. That's weird to me and I don't really like that as it makes some of the fights unpredictable.

You just have to know the gimmick for each fight, or you will have to rely on luck. Oh, and also be immune to insta-death magic. I forgot what the heaven one is called, but the death one is mudoon.

Really enjoying the characters and the story. It's absurd and silly in the best way possible. That being said, I'm glad I'm playing on an emulator where I can just save state in multiple slots whenever I want. If I didn't have that feature I'd be a lot more annoyed at some of the design mechanics.

Had to reformat my hard drive and unfortunately one of the victims was all my saves on this game. Really too damn bad. I was about 50 to 60% through the game. I really really was enjoying it. And that's the first time I can say that for a jrpg in awhile. I may come back to it some day in the future but I just can't motivate myself to start again so soon and I don't want to use somebody else's save.

Really good game though.
