Title: Steam for Linux, bitches!

Aww yeah!

:bow Praise be to our Valve and Humble Bundle overlords for actually making this possible. :bow2

I forgot just how big my Steam library is, and how much of it was Humble Bundle stuff that is 100% Linux compatible. Not seen in this list: Bastion, Super Meat Boy, Braid, Bit.Trip Runner, Cave Story+, and NightSky. (Error when redeeming, guess this client is still beta after all.)

And I never touched any of them because I forgot plus I was unsure my 2007-era PC could run them (I tried Amnesia but it crashed on startup.) But my Linux-based work laptop should do fine for most of these (Amnesia of course I'm unsure about, since this doesn't have a dedicated GPU.)

Still, super impressed.

Whats linux

Usually a cool OS with a bad UI but Gnome 3 is amazingly good and when combo'd with Ubuntu makes for a solid OS.

I don't know about issues, but you can probably install the .deb. Valve is focusing on Ubuntu right now though.

Look ma no games.

More than Wii U!

:drool Psychonauts, Meat Boy, Bastion, Amnesia, Braid, CaveStory, Limbo, VVVVVV :drool

I forgot I had Trine 2 from a Humble Bundle, almost bought it on Wii U. :lol Although that version has more content it probably isn't worth rebuying the whole thing for $16.

If Steam could get their entire catalog working on Linux, I'd probably honestly drop Windows.

Well, and GOG, too.

No linux executables. My limited knowledge does not contain why this means the same games from the Software Center work fine but I assume it has to do with some kind of guideline Valve has set.

Well, and GOG, too.
I'd certainly change my desktop to dual-boot at the least. My laptops have been linux default boot with a small Windows partition for Steam/GOG/older games for about five years now.

Hmm it redeemed some of the games but not others. Like Psychonauts.

Unless you mean the devs have yet to add the Linux versions to the store, which makes sense. Still could use a better error message tho.

It will most likely never happen, because who is going to pay for all that to get done?

If you "install" the games in Steam and then go look in the folders for them, they're empty. And these are games that if you have in the Software Center (through Humble Bundles or just bought) or have installed otherwise work just fine in Linux.

All of them are apparently games that do not have linux executables available. FTL, for example, doesn't have one, you run a script to start it.

The FTL beta DOES have one though.

Password: betapatch

Then you can download and install like normal on Steam.

Trine 2 doesn't perform as well at 1080p but I had AA on... I'll mess around with it. World of Goo is blazing, as expected.

And Yet it Moves runs OK but can't be configured... Cogs can be configured but doesn't run great...

Seems like the rest of my indie bundle games aren't making it over, although I can get them from the Ubuntu Software Center. Think I'll do that and then just add them to Steam.

The FTL beta DOES have one though.

Blizzard Entertainment Planning A Linux Game For 2013 (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTI2ODE)

It's Phoronix so take with a massive grain of salt, but they were right about Steam for Linux so who knows.

Also, evidently there's a Linux WoW client (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTA0NQ) for a while but it's internal to Blizzard only.

World of Goo runs great but it's completely non-configurable, on that side it's a pretty lazy and obvious console port (and yeah, it's not configurable on Windows either last I checked.)

Like I can't even mute the game music, I have to mute my whole system. Except I can't do that when the game is running since it fullscreens and takes all keyboard input. So I have to remember to mute it before starting the game, or I have to quit the game, mute audio, then start it back up. Just more trouble than it should be.

http://linux.slashdot.org/story/13/01/05/143238/valve-reveals-first-month-of-steam-linux-gains

Quote
An anonymous reader writes with news that Valve has updated its Hardware & Software Survey for December 2012, which reflects the first month of the platform being available for Linux. Even though the project is still in a beta test, players on Ubuntu already account for 0.8% of Steam usage. The 64-bit clients for Ubuntu 12.10 and 12.04.1 showed about double the share of the 32-bit versions. MacOS use also showed growth, rising to about 3.7%. Windows 7's usage share dropped by over 2%, but balanced by the growth of Windows 8, which is now at just under 7%. The total share for Windows is still about 95%.

Linux: 0.8%
OS X: 3.7%
Windows 8: 7%
Windows (all): 95%

I'd say that's pretty good for a first month, considering it's still a beta and here's only 39 Linux games on Steam so far.

This is actually moderately exciting to me for one reason only - the possibility for a very thin Linux Steam client that could boot off a USB stick (or whatever). Of course Linux h/w drivers don't seem to be so great but in theory you could finally reduce some of the system overhead that holds PCs back as gaming platforms, right?

Title: Re: Steam for Linux, bitches!
Post by: Tasty on January 07, 2013, 08:49:49 PM
You should probably be considering its USB speed constraints before any kind of driver related stuffs.

Backlog's big enough, doesn't seem like my cup of tea either but I'll give it a shot eventually.

I don't think so, the level of precision you need could only come from a mouse. Trying to get that Glaive Beam across 5 rooms on a Wii U Gamepad would be incredibly frustrating.

It's probably too hard for Andrex anyway

Base distro doesn't really matter as much as desktop environment anymore IMO, and for that I'll always recommend Gnome Shell. So fluid and awesome. :bow2

Although, I tend to recommend Ubuntu if only because of the Software Center, which has many of the Humble Bundle games.
