Title: Kindle Thread
Post by: Great Rumbler on December 26, 2012, 02:07:36 PM
Got me a Kindle for Crimmus, so let's talk about ebooks and such. Mainly, I wanna know about good deals on ebooks, since most of the books I want on Amazon are kinda expensive [especially since what I really want is digital version of physical books I already have].

Do you have the paperwhite edition? How bright is the screen and more specifically, how much does it light the room? I want to use it to read while the GF sleeps, normal light sometimes annoys her, would this work better than a normal small desk lamp?

Nah, I just got the cheapest model they have. No light or anything fancy like that.

the light is adjustable. it can go from very bright to very dim. you should have absolutely no problem with using it in that scenario  unless you're pointing the kind screen at her face with the backlight jacked all the way out.

also: the backlight is always technically on. in bright settings you just dont notice it but there is no "off" setting. .

I bought a basic model yesterday with some gift cards. I used to have a Kindle Keyboard, but sold it, then felt like an idiot later when I realized it's pretty useful/necessary for testing formatting. The basic model is definitely a noticeable jump in screen contrast over the keyboard, I can read in much lower light. It weighs next to nothing, you barely feel it when you're holding it in one hand. Not crazy about the tiny page-turning buttons, but I've already gotten used to them for the most part. The worst part of the design is the power button placement, it's on the bottom and I am forever triggering it when I use a finger for balance. As a basic reader it's really decent, and now I can finally get in on some of that Amazon Prime borrowing action.

Thanks for those two links, Eel - I missed out on $1.99 Under the Dome last week and felt bad. Fortunately today's Kindle deal is a book I've had my eye on. HUZZAH
