The show is silly but it makes me laugh so... Yay!

BBT is blackface for nerds comic goes here
I gueaa Im not a nerd then :)
Do you really feel offended?
-
I hadn't seen one episode of the show until relatively recently.
It's fine for a network comedy. I was surprised to see that it was okay for what it is and that nerds getting up in arms about nerds being depicted a certain way on a cbs comedy are as usual over-reacting. It's like getting annoyed by the revenge of the nerds movies or something.
-
I saw a few episodes a year or two ago. It was ok.
I vote yay because it makes so many nerds asshurt. I've never seen a show generate so much angst from internet nerds that it makes me think the show hits a little too close to home.
-

Honestly I've never even seen an episode and don't really care one way or the other!
-
I think my issue with the show is that people I know use the absurd characters as some sort of study guide for relating to or identifying me. Oh you play videogames and use the internet a lot- you are like blah, or you remind me of him cause you know stuff about science. Oh you'd like the show cause they're like you and its like they aren't fucking like me god damn that show but I don't say that because im not about to get into it with friends I don't see that often over a sitcom
Its obnoxious.
-
some people think they like this show, but really just like listening to a laugh track for a half hour. For instance:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKS3MGriZcs
was that funny?

There is probably some truth to this but the same could probably be said for any show. Remember when America would break down whether you were a Ross, or a Joey, or a Chandler.

lol it's like that Chapelle bit about Indians. "You're a hunter gatherer correct? I learned about you in social studies."

It's very hard to argue taste but the episodes I've seen had me a laugh a few times. If it was on HBO or something I would obviously expect a highly nuanced more sophisticated take on nerd culture. But this is CBS and a network show that has to reach millions of people. The humour is very broad. And generalized and stereotyped. The same as most network stuff. It's certainly not Seinfeld but relative to network tv its fine imo.
-
Have you considered a career in politics, Stoney?
-
It's shit.
-
It seems really forced, especially whenever they showcase some aspect of popular nerd culture.
-

I would never get a vote. Extreme opinions rule the day.

Im with Stoney, all these shows are stereotyped.
It seems really forced, especially whenever they showcase some aspect of popular nerd culture.
Well it may seem forced if you know better what they are talking about.
-
Exodust: Well its half my fault- they use the show to try to relate to me cause I don't offer up the time for them to get to know me better- so who's fault is it really? This is why I don't fly into a rage whenever it comes up.
-
Also penny has big boobs.
-
I've tried but I can't hang. But I also haven't watched a network sitcom since... maybe Seinfeld? That clip with the laugh track removed was cringeworthy.
I usually just assume people who find it hilarious also love Jeff Dunham or something awful.

Parks and Rec and Happy Endings are genuinely funny. Give 'em a shot if you haven't.
-
Parks n Rec had a weak 1st season but GODDAMN did it get good starting w/S2
-
Parks and Rec is the best ensemble American comedy on TV right now. I'd argue its the best since the first few season of 30 rock...maybe even before that
-
Once Parks and Rec stopped trying to be like the Office, it achieved God-tier status. Seriously funny.
-
Offerman and Poehler are just perfect
-

exactly that
-
fiance loves it, i have never seen a whole episode
completely apathetic towards it, just not interested in watching it
-
never seen it but this always makes me laff
(http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/000/462/313/fb5.png)
-
I watch it when there's nothing better on. It's stupid but I've laughed on occasion, I like Raj the best probably when he makes jokes about Indian culture.
I like the chick Bernadette on the show tho.
-
Haters gonna hate.
-
Probably the worst show I've ever seen.
-
Pretty funny nerds can't capitalize on the show's popularity and turn it into a "girl's nerdy best friend" gig. Just like all these gay guys are eating good off the "girl's gay best friend" role
-
I don't think anyone's fighting for friend zone spots
-
Someone posted this in the last BBT thread

haha that last panel

I'm pretty sure men do capitalize on this role often and also resent it: see every Nice Guy on the Internet.
Edit: beaten
-
Watched one or two episodes. Just another lame CBS comedy. They are all kind of bad, but Two Broke Girls at least has hot lead characters. I mean it dosent offend me and well I don't care that it's out there. I mean not like it's depiction of nerds is original. Fuck people have thought nerds are like that well before that show. Luckily no one has said I am like any of the characters on the show.
-
My mom loves it. It's not that bad. Doesn't deserve the hate or the love that it gets
-

I don't care for it.

I'm a nerd

I like it. I get the impression many nerds don't like it because "they're above it" or something.
-
I don't like it because I hate every single character. I couldn't care less about whatever references they choose to force in, but the way they do it makes me want to punch them in the face multiple times.
Insufferable just about sums the whole thing up.
-
I'm not a fan. But that's mainly because I just wish laugh track/filmed in front of a live audience multi-camera sitcoms would just die already. That preference aside, it just seems pretty middling to me. But I'm not terribly invested in the argument one way or another.
-
worst shit ever
-
shit show for shitpeople. if you laff at it i hope u get the aids in ur butt
-
just a boring show. i don't think it's offensive to nerds (they embarrass themselves), it's just not funny.
But I probably have no room to talk. I think Two and a Half Men was (before Kutcher) was much funnier and got much more undeserved hate IMO. Still not a great show or anything, but not ther abomination that nerds made it out to be. You could just see every joke coming from half a mile away.
-
I like it. I get the impression many nerds don't like it because "they're above it" or something.
Yeah, I was in the "blackface for nerds" camp, but the worst thing about it is that it's just not funny. I've seen it during flights, and I have yet to even crack a smile at what should be "my kind of humor." Whatevers.

I liked the first four seasons of Two and a Half Men. I'm not going to pretend I have impeccable taste in television but given how most Two and a Half Men/Big Bang Theory detractors are fans of steaming piles like Community, neither do they.
-
Community had the promise of being a truly great show about 2/3rds into the first season, then harmon got all nerdlinger and made the entire series become a real-people family guy. show is terrible now.

Can't disagree with that. A lot of the early humor was great because it was at least semi grounded. Now it's completely off the rails. Doesn't help he overused Abed to the point of annoyance. I think I gave up on the show with the s2 (s3?) Christmas episode where Jeff gets "turned" into a happy-go-lucky caroler just because the plot said so. Went against his character, and yeah lol at that, but this was a show that made a point of saying "pay attention to how we handle the characters! We do it right, everyone else does it wrong!"

I think this best sums it up for me. Am I meant to laugh because they mention science or comics?
-
I just laugh cause they are all autistic and socially akward/inept. that's the joke. The rest is just the dressing.
-
Q:Is this show funny?
A: I'd probably need to make some sort of algorithm on my Linux-based software to find out!!!!Zabunga!
Excerpt from The Big Bang Theory Joke Book.
-
It's funny and endearing because penny knows about shrodingers dog and pavlovs cats.
-
It succeeds based off of an audience of geeks who are desperate for any sort of mainstream attention even if its belittling and those who like to see the nerd stereotype and have it be made cute and unreal.
The comedy fails yeah, but that's the simple part! Boring!
On the other hand, I kind of love the no laugh track version* where you see the show is really depressing and the characters lives are actually miserable. I would love to see a show use the sitcom format and formula minus a laugh track or audience and play to the misery. I find BBT sort of interesting when you stop looking at it as a comedy and more as misery porn.
*I think they've stated and shown they don't use a laugh track and have an audience that laughs like a laugh track. That's disturbing and mindblowing on another level.
-
I've only seen parts of three episodes, but it's pretty terrible. I can watch shows with laugh tracks (like old Seinfeld eps), but for some reason the laugh tracks on this show just magnify how unfunny it is.
I just saw an episode of Parks and Rec the other night. It was on while I was on a treadmill. It was a christmas episode where they were at a woodworking convention. It was one of the funniest episodes of anything I have seen in a loong time. I was laughing out loud like a lunatic while running.

exactly. It is entertaining for what it is. It doesn't try to be some super clever beacon of high comedy and I am fine with that.

Big Bang Theory is such a bland, inoffensive show that I have to wonder what it has done to deserve such hatred from everyone?
-
It's a guilty pleasure of mine. I hate it, so much. But sometimes I can't help but marathon it. If anyone asks me about it, I always direct them to the youtube clip without the laugh track, and say how embarassing it is for nerds as a whole, since some of us don't have Asbergers... But as I said, I still enjoy watching it from time to time. It's kind of weird.
-
Klepek linked this "excellent essay" in his end of the week thing:
http://butmyopinionisright.tumblr.com/post/31079561065/the-problem-with-the-big-bang-theory
Why don’t I like The Big Bang Theory anymore? I think at first I was so happy to see people like me represented on mainstream television that I ignored the cruelty behind the humour. As I continue to watch the programme and see more and more repeats on E4 in the daytime it’s become much clearer that actually I’m not being represented. I’m being ridiculed.
-
How could it have taken more than one episode to realize that ???
-
so I decided to spend my first few hours of unemployment on Wikipedia, where I learned that Bear Naked Ladies wrote the theme song to this show. I was curious about an idea found in the lyrics:
It's expanding ever outward
It will cause the stars to go the other way
Collapsing ever inward
We won't be here
It won't be heard
Our best and brightest figure that it'll make an even bigger Big Bang
IS THAT LAST SENTENCE TRUE??!?! :o

No, current theory is that the universe will keep expanding, and at an ever-accelerating rate for all time. Eventually the distance between galaxies will become immense. Of course, protons and neutrons have an expected stability of 10^32 (maybe 10^28? I forget) years, so that will probably determine the actual life of the universe.
Edit: see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_of_an_expanding_universe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_of_an_expanding_universe). Essentially, the universe will expand and cool down enough that life freezes and no work is possible (thermodynamics).

Awful, awful show. The clips with the laugh track taken out are a revelation.

No "Mupepe" option for the vote? :'(

Why would anyone sully mupepe's reputation by associating him with this show.
-
fuck this show.
Did TV just lie to Barry? It did, other Barry, it did.

I have yet to meet any actual science types who like the show. Seems like it appeals more to non-scientists because it reinforces their preconceived notions of what a geek/scientist should be like.

Leonard: Should we have invited her for lunch?
Sheldon: (unlocking door to their apartment) No, we're going to start season two of Battlestar Galactica.
:lol :lol :lol
Leonard: We already watched the season two DVDs.
Sheldon: Not with commentary.
:lol :lol
Leonard: I think we should be good neighbors. Invite her over, make her feel welcome.
Sheldon: We never invited Louis-slash-Louise over.
Leonard: Then that was wrong of us. We need to widen our circle.
Sheldon: I have a very wide circle. I have 212 friends on MySpace.
:lol
Leonard: Yes, and you've never met one of them.
:lol :lol
Sheldon: That's the beauty of it.
:lol :lol :lol
Leonard: I'm going to invite her over. We'll have a nice meal and ... chat.
Sheldon: Chat? We don't chat, at least not offline.
:lol
Leonard: Well, it's not difficult. You just listen to what she says and then you say something appropriate in response.
(Leonard knocks on Penny's door.)
Sheldon: To what end?
:lol :lol
Leonard: Hi ... again.
Penny: Hi--
Sheldon: Hi--
:lol
Leonard: Hi--
:lol :lol
Penny: Hi.
:lol :lol :lol
Leonard: Anyway, um.... We brought home Indian food? (holds food bag toward Penny's face) And, um.... I know that moving can be stressful, and ... and I find that when I'm undergoing stress, that good food and company can have a comforting effect. Also, curry is a natural laxative and I don't have to tell you that, y'know, a clean.
:lol :lol :rofl :rofl :lol :lol
edit: forgot the laugh track
-
Also bernadette has big boobs.
fixed. :drool
also, this show is hot garbage.
-
Sheldon: Leonard, I'm no expert here but I believe in the context of a luncheon invitation you might want to skip the reference to bowel movements.
:lol :lol
Penny: Oh, you're inviting me over to eat?
Leonard: Um ... yes.
:lol
Penny: Oh, that's so nice. I'd love to.
Leonard: Great.
Penny: So, what do you guys do for fun around here?
Sheldon: Well, today we tried masturbating for money.
:lol :lol :lol
(Leonard glares at Sheldon. Sheldon hesitates, realizing his social misstep.)
:lol :lol :lol :lol
Oh, that Sheldon.

It's not really a leading theory anymore since the 90s - up until then the fate of the universe was thought to be tied to it's density. If dense enough gravity would slow expansion and eventually reverse (then collapse). If less dense than that the universe would expand forever.
It now appears the universe is not only expanding, but accelerating for unknown reasons (dark energy)

Someone who's asexual would still have knowledge of etiquette and sexual taboos. It's not like Isaac Newton walked around without pants down.

I have relatives in the part of PA where you see Confederate flags and I swear - and I know this is anecdotal - they love the show because it serves up every impression of big-city eggheads they've been led to believe.

I suggest we put on these authentic Wamapoke headdresses and dance around the table.
Absolutely not. That sounds *highly* offensive.
Chief: Does it, white man?
. . . no! It's not offensive . . . so let's do it. (puts on the headdress) so clearly, this is not offensive.
It is offensive.
I'm very sorry.
Take it off.

Well to be fair, the show also rips on Penny for being rather unintelligent and super religious rednecks (whenever Sheldon brings up his past)... it's not just geeks they rip on :P

I still kind of want to fuck Blossom.

That is true...they do emphasize the Penny thing. Maybe I haven't seen enough episodes because it just seems like one bad geek trope after the other in the ones I've seen.

Iirc the theory is that everything will move so far apart that everything will die/ be so far apart that no life will be possible no?
-
The problem with the lyrics is the first line - if it's expanding ever outward then we are looking at heat death/big freeze not a Big Crunch resulting in a new Big Bang
In fact it just looks like two mixed ideas - but hey it's not like this is MC Hawkings we are dealing with

Yeah I was gonna say, you're giving far too much scrutiny to lyrics written by the guys who wrote "chikkitty china the Chinese chicken/have a drumstick and your brain stops ticking"
I like them a lot; I'm not sure if they're supposed to be a guilty pleasure, or a normal pleasure.
:LAUGH TRACK MAYBE GOES HERE:

I loved One Week as a kid and Stunt was one of the first albums I ever bought. I relistened to it because of this thread. Im not sure what people said about it at the time, but its a fairly corny album by today's standards I think. I suppose by Canadian standards though it might have been and still could be considered cutting edge music.
-
They're no The Tea Party.
-
This just seems like another one that follows the trend of blunt comedy carried by increasingly unrealistic and entirely unlikable figures (e.g. How I met your mother, Happy Endings). I swear, Red Dwarf has more realistic characters.
-
How I Met Your Mother is fucking terrible.
-
I had an ex drag me to a Barenaked Ladies concert (along with Alanis Morisette) at Jones Beach a few years late to the party. It was OK I guess, I figured it was only fair considering how many times I dragged her to see Armin and Tiesto :P

I had to put up with 5 minutes of this shit at the laudromat. Fuck this show and it's shitty laugh track.
