Title: Himu, did this kid in Best Buy con his Dad out of $450?
Post by: Eel O'Brian on December 31, 2012, 10:26:17 AM
I was in BB yesterday, and these two people in front of me had a fuckton of PC games. I was thinking "Hey, that's nice, they're probably buying post-Xmas gifts for a trip home or something." I dunno, man, I had a lot of time to think, shit was taking forever. The majority were Sims expansions. Then the kid (possibly an adult, he was much larger than his father) starts telling the register lady that his PC stopped working and he had to replace all his games on his new PC. The register lady said he had a very understanding father, then totaled it up to around $465 with tax. I almost busted out laughing at the blanched look which came over the Dad's face, but he swiped that credit card anyway.
So anyway, Himu, as the resident Sims guy, did this kid just fuck his Dad out of $450? That was all clearly bullshit, right? You can reinstall those packs, or they're tied into Origin or something, right?
If it helps, the kid (again, unsure if adult, he was huge) was wearing one of those leather fedora-type hats which immediately make you hate a person upon sight.

I would add that they weren't ALL Sims expansions, but most of them were, and I was surprised those things are like $30 a piece. They must make a killing off that bullshit.

Sims expansions are basically highway robbery.
Also, yeah, they should all be available to redownload through Origin, UNLESS he forgot to register them through Origin which is possible given what I imagine this guy's intelligence to be.

I was unclear in the OP - I'm thinking the kid was just pulling a scam to snag a bunch of games. His dad probably doesn't even know what all games the kid owns, and he just bullshitted him into "replacing."

I buy the steam versions, and the steam version comes with a code you can reg on EA's site. I use origin for the occasional FIFA 12/13 match, and I noticed that my Sims 3 games were in my Origin library. I'd imagine the same would be true if you regged a physical copy. Sounds to me like a general case of ignorance. A lot of people just buy the physical copies because hey, why not, it's pretty convenient right? But EA rarely if ever drops the price. They have these expacs for 40 dollars a fucking expac, that's as much as the base game.
If you're going the physical route there's little you can do for that. You're going to be paying out your ass if you do that. This is mostly a case of a stupid kid who doesn't know about DD, and a just as stupid dad who is incapable of researching.

As for EPs, I only buy the expansions that actually add a shit load of stuff. Seasons and Supernatural change the entire game up, so they were worth 40 (combined, 20 dollars a piece via steam).

If he was buying the physical copies as "replacements" for games he lost during a computer breakdown, wouldn't he either 1.) have physical copies already or 2.) have digital copies from Steam or Origin?
Yeah, I'd say he pulled one over on the old man, no question.
