it takes literally 5 seconds to hook up a hdmi port from your computer to your television. why you need a console for that?
"most people" have laptopsYes which they use for computer stuff and which they don't want to go and find a hdmi cable to hook up their laptap(which they would probably like to use as the relax and stream whatever is they are watching) and would rather use a home media device that is already hooked up their tv which is for media viewing.
It's funny how you are making up all these excuses when you could just get an hdmi cable and hook it up to your tv right now for 20 bucksIt's not excuses. If they were, why would any of these streaming apps and devices exist and sell when you can "just plug in a computer". There's no point to PS3 Media server or Roku if these were just excuses. People don't want to just plug in their computer.
In any case, I was talking to my friend Beezy who lives at home with his folks and mostly cares about streaming from his computer in his room. For him, hdmi is a serviceable alternative rather than waiting for next gen consoles to supply it for him. ???resolution

When I do this, some of the image either gets cut off or I get black bars. I'm guessing that's because there are only average to shitty laptops in my house?

Nice! Yeah, it's always an issue. It's the number 1 thing people complain to me about their HDTVs, which is awesome because it's so easy to fix. That and fucking motion smoothing, always get people saying their HDTVs make everything look 'hyper real' and 'like a Soap Opera' which isn't surprising when their sets are splicing in digital frames. My set calls it "Intelligent Frame Creation" and had it on by default like most other TVs being sold today. I still don't know why they insist on doing this :yuck :-X :yuckThat soap opera effect drives me fucking crazy, especially since most of my friends who have it on their tv don't notice it. I've turned it off in every home I've been to.

Ehh... it's good in some movies and bad in other ones. Action scenes look very good with it, explosions, water running etc. talking heads: nope.gif.

My parents' Samsung SMART TV has apps for Netflix and HBO GO built-in, but they automatically create that effect and I have no idea how to turn it off. It annoys the fuck out of me every time I'm home because TV from the FiOS box doesn't have the effect. I should probably look deeper into the manual, there has to be a way to turn it off within the apps.

Omgt worked! The setting wasn't called overscan on my TV though. Wtf is the purpose of that?
