SO SLEEPEH...
Nice. I'm seriously thinking about bagging the DLC.
-
Got the steam fuck up edition - thank The Lord for screaming children or I would have missed it
-
i'm mad i missed the price mistake, but by the time i get around to it, it'll be that price for real.
-
i thought sleeping dogs was a pretty good game but it was missing something to push it over the edge into "great"
it's the thing SR3 had.
-
this game is bawse tits
-
I lucked into the price error too. Just happened to check steam app. It's pretty awesome, looks great. Not sure how long it will keep my interest but I've wasted 4.50 on worse!

Is this game legit? It might be fun to play it after I finish up Ryu ga Gotoku 5 and compare/contrast the two.

Well, it's basically a generic open-world game set in Hong Kong with some Batman: Arkham City-lite combat. In other words, yeah, it's a pretty fun game, just not a great game.

I'd agree that it's not GOTY, but it's pretty darned great. If you like HK cinema and GTA, yeah, it's a good use of your time.

It's basically a western polished version of the Yakuza games. You know, Yakuza without all the jank but also lacking that combat depth Japanese action games have.
Story is good like the Yakuza games. I think you'd really enjoy it.

Cool. RGG5 is really good. They added in even more crazy stuff (taxi races, free Virtua Fighter 2 with online play, Taiko no Tatsujin, etc.), upgraded to a new engine and improved the combat system.

Sleeping Dogs is really good. It's comfort food. I don't think it's exceptionally well, but it's very solid. Nothing particularly wrong with the game, but nothing really launched it to the stardom it should.
I know that sounds super "game journo" but it's really the best thing that comes to mind.

Those are the kinds of games I like, sounds good to me.

It's also an easy Platinum if you care for it ;)

super game journo but super accurate

Don't quite understand the overwhelming positive internet reaction to this game. What was good about this game? The story? The story was pretty much most obvious "undercover cop gets in over his head" story out there. I kept waiting for something interesting to happen, some cool spin on it and it just kept going on with it's predictable take on a well worn crime story stable. And then it ended in the most un challenging way possible. For a supposedly gritty story, it sure took a cowards way out.
I guess the gameplay was all right, but I mean it's got nothing on Batman and played like a pretty basic beat-em-up game and then the 2nd half throws at you a lot of just kind of no thrills gun play. It just wasn't an exciting game to play. I mean it's not like the game had any real balls to the wall set piece missions to mask it's ho-hum gameplay like say Saint's Row.
I played it, thought it was ok, and then quickly traded it in. I don't get it, yet it seems to have resonated with a lot of people. Yet, it I see it getting highly praised for it's story, which really confuses me.

Agreed.
I think what is inflating the praise is the shit the game went through and the expectations derived from that plus the game actually beating those expectations.
Game is still great though :lol
-
That's just it, though: a lot of HK cinema follows these same patterns. Sleeping Dogs doesn't try to reinvent what an HK cinema story might be, it just follows the tropes religiously and, in doing so, resonates with fans of the genre.
I also think the game doesn't get enough credit for some of the more clever innovations it incorporates. The fact that there's competent gunplay AND mêlée, AND manages to keep the mêlée relevant by limiting gun access overall, that's impressive when you consider the scale of the game. The use of shops' comestibles and purchasable outfits to improve stats was clever, but I would have enjoyed just a little more effect from them.
It's also stunning, as mentioned, that the game turned out this well despite its lengthy stay in "development hell."
-
another thing the game doesn't get nearly enough credit for is its integration of Cantonese and English in spoken dialogue. it's very authentic

75% off Steam right now. Don't know how that compares to the Holiday sales
-
Finished the Nightmare in North Point DLC; it was, in the end, too short, but very fun. I'd say it's more enjoyable than RDR's joke/horror-themed DLC, though by no means as robust or varied. My Gamerscore is still maxed in the game.
I hope they come out with another 250 pts' worth of DLC I can pay for, but it doesn't seem likely at this point.

Boo ya! I am excite.
Wasn't there one about an Enter the Dragon-like fight contest on an island, or is that this?
-
so there's a game that was made mostly for western audiences, but they will sell you DLC that makes you dude look like a guy from The Storm Riders, Drunken Master, The Monkey King, and there's a DLC where you can fight hopping vampires.
I still can't believe that this is a thing. I'm glad of it though.
