Yes, really.
lol Katamari? Really? I can understand the Custers Revenge more...
I still need to play Chrono Trigger all the way through. Ditto for Super Metriod. I was playing an ILLEGAL ROM on my DS and the game kept freezing when some robot dude wanted to race me :( I'll just fork out for the iOS version at some point.

People putting MGS2 down need to be shot.
MGS2 is one of the most replayable, and content heavy games. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance is even better, due to VR missions, Snake Tales, and more. MGS2 is a fine choice. You can bring up the story, but my reply will simply be,"what story?" haven't played MGS2 story since 2001, have skipped it every single replay since. Game owns.
Because she was my first, creepy. She was my first. MGS3 is the way better game (with subsistance controls), but I have like 100 hours into MGS2. VR missions :bow2
Bet you Creepy couldn't play MGS2 on European Extreme. 8) :smug
I chose the games I played when I was 10-15. Games that left their impact. Games I played at the perfect time. I'm pretty sure your list is basically the same deal. If I was getting into games during the snes period then my list would be diffrent, but no I got into games during the PS2. Thats just the way it is. I'm not going to chose old games I didn't grow up playing.Metal Gear Solid 3

Doom 2 and some other stuff.
Never once did I replay a Metal Gear game unless we count Twin Snakes as replaying the first game.
No cheevos back then plus I saw the whole story so why bother. It is no Ninja Gaiden or Super Meat Boy.
Sim City 2000I knew I was forgetting some series, though I might have to side with 3000.
Spyro 1yay

I thought 4 was amazing and maybe the game of that generation but Resident Evil 2 just hooked me in a way very few video games ever have. I think it changed my opinion on videogames and what they were capable of. It's probably very archaic to play it now but at the time it blew me away.

Replaying Metal Gear titles unlocks rewards. Beating the game in under x hours, beating the game with no kills, beating the game with no alerts. This can be a challenge, and it's one of the big reasons Metal Gear Solid games are so popular: they have insane replay value. It is no different than Resident Evil titles. Add in higher difficulties such as hard (no radar) so you have to use memory and sound/visual cues on a no alert run, and extreme, and finally European Extreme (exclusive to MGS2: Substance) and you have insanely competitive fanbase trying to be the first and best in any one run. Metal Gear titles are all about runs, and completing the perfect run.
So anyone who talks about story just sounds like a dumbass in my opinion, because no Metal Gear Solid fan who isn't an animu addled distinguished mentally-challenged fellow gives one single fuck about Metal Gear and story because we skip that shit after the first run anyways.
No, probably not. Zelda Ocarina of Time is stock answer for my favorite game, 'cause nostalgia x great game = getouttaherecriticalthinking. Beyond that it's a jumble of other games.
I know my #1 favorites in various genre. Chrono Trigger is my favorite jrpg. Project Gotham Racing 2 is my favorite racing game. Virtua Fighter 4 Evo is my favorite 3D fighting game. Full Throttle or Last Express are my favorite adventure games. Stuff like that.

hrm, i hate 'all time' lists for things as ephemeral and fast-aging as video games specifically and in general for being bloody stupid (since none of us can possibly experience all the shit that is around us right now, never mind in the past and future) but anyway, my 5 faves might well be
did you just tell me not to hedge, Stoney :lol
So, how many people would happily sit down and replay their top 5 games, start to finish, as they are now (no mods or graphical overhauls...and put in the kind of hours into the MP that you did back then)? And not just in some fantasy land if-i-had-the-time way...actually shove aside unfinished games from this month or whenever to play the old stuff. Sadly from my list the only ones I could even imagine doing so for would be Planescape and NGBI just finished a playthrough FFX yesterday actually. You say with no graphical overhauls, I guess that's harder. I mean I just played the HD versions of ZoE and MGS recently. I played the PS2 version of RE4 and then the HD release not to long after it was released. Ideally I'll play these games every year, but hopefully life stops me from that. But I'd probably play the HD versions. Outside of ZoE the hd versions are just the same games in HD so why not?
So, how many people would happily sit down and replay their top 5 games, start to finish, as they are now?The games I picked all still hold up well and I replay them occasionally. Good games don't age poorly. Of course, if there is a HD version of the game then I'm going to play that instead.
Doom 2 and some other stuff.
Doom wouldn't crack a top 10 list for me or anything but man I can remember it clear as a fucking bell the first time I ever saw doom running on a roomates computer and just being blown away. I know Doom wasn't the first fps technically (even from those guys) but man the way it put it all together it might as well have been. It's a cliche to say now but nothing was the same after that game. It was one of the most influential things ever.

's da truf. Though I will say that I've not played Max Payne 3, and LA Noire is the biggest disappointment of this generation. GTA IV was not what I wanted, but LA Noire was just a truckload of horse shit.
I really liked LA NOIRE for a few hours, the setting etc. My first footchase.
Game really falls apart when you notice that the interrogations are crap and you're doing same 5 things all the time (and those things aren't executed too good).
GTAIV was BEEP BEEP you wanna go bowling brah? BEEP BEEP. And restarting missions was poop. Apperently this was fixed in expansions, but thats too late for me. I'm not going to buy DLC to fix core issues of games, that should be a patch.

games (that are appealing due to mechanics or rule sets) are far easier to go back to than something that's primarily a narrative thing like books or tv series or whatevs for me.

Yeah, I guess so, but I rather just play a new game almost every time (or multiplayer of some recent game). The exception is something like FTL, which is all about playing over and over oh my god it's so awesome.
Chronological:
Pirates!
Pool of Radiance
Xcom
Civ
Day of Defeat
Zelda OoT and Phantasy Star 2 would be the top two console games to almost crack the list.
1. Ocarina of Time
2. Super Mario 64
3. GoldenEye 007
4. Super Mario Bros. 3
5. Gran Turismo 3
Some lists seem really heavy on one time period
1. Ocarina of Time
2. Super Mario 64
3. GoldenEye 007
4. Super Mario Bros. 3
5. Gran Turismo 3
Like this is what i mean, 3 games from 1 console screams nostalgia.

Also: when I see "Simcity" or "Civ" are you guys talking about the series or the original games in each series? And I thought about putting Day of Defeat on my list, TA. I put a lot of hours into that (actually, more into the beta than the retail version).
Its lists you can do what you want, just seems very strange if you dont enjoy anything as much anymore.
Did anyone say Shenmue? I hope not.
Top 5 is really small and I think someone here said it depends on mood, but I find it hard to believe so many of you havent picked a single game from this mammoth gen that lasted 7 years.
Seriously dudes.
I like to see if games last the test of time before I start thinking of them as my all-time faves. I was hesitant even putting SMG on there this soon.
As others have said, though, this list is probably going to be heavily tilted towards the era you had the most enjoyment with games, which for many is not going to be the adult years. I'm lucky if I get an hour or so every couple of days to game of late.
Daytona USA (ARC)
Virtua Fighter 3 (ARC, DC)
Todd's Adventures in Slime World (Lynx)
Elder Scrolls (Series)
Rainbow Six (Xbox)
I've seen Mass Effect 2 on a number of lists I think...was very tempted to put it down myself. (the other one that was real hard to leave off is Advance Wars, and I thought hard about Portal/Portal 2 as well...)
Mass Effect 2 and Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan! are probably my favorite games of the generation.

If SMG isn't on your list, then you haven't played it. Pure and simple.

Or, you know, you just like other games more. It's definitely one of the better games this gen, though.
Mass Effect 2 and Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan! are probably my favorite games of the generation.
Kenzan *just* missed my list. Other this-gen games that were close for me were TWEWY, Vanquish, Bayonetta, and Geometry Wars: RE.

isn't Dragon Age all kinds of jank though
isn't Dragon Age all kinds of jank thoughThe 1st Dragon Age is pretty decent. I don't play a lot of PC rpgs so as far as I was concerned it was good. If you have more experience with the genre I could see it being bad.
Blah blah blah nostalgia.
I didn't play GT3 until a few years ago and I gave it a #5 spot.
OoT and SM64 took top 2 spots because Miyamoto directed both and he was fucking godly in the 90s, not because of nostalgia.
But keep pretending the games in this day and age with excessive cutscenes, QTE's and out of contorl budgets are actually better than how they used to be. :lol
I hope you're not referring to indie games which pretend to be like the good old games but are complete shit, like Super Meat Boy. Indie games are shit simply because they have shit graphics so often.

i dunno, i wouldn't be surprised if this board's average is tipping into the 30s now. we've got some members who have got to be pushing 40.
I can't wait until we're all old pieces of shit and still posting on this board in the year 2043.
I am 26 and I got an NES SMB/Duck Hunt combo when I was 3. I was a spoiled brat.
I'm 26 and I had one of those wood paneled Atari knockoffs that came from Montgomery Wards. I don't really remember that much about it, but I do remember having an NES a few years later.
I'm 27. Saw a neighbor play a NES with SMB when I was four. Played it for a little bit and got hooked. Spent as much time as possible at the neighbor's house even though I didn't particularly care for the kid. I just had to play SMB. Next year I got the NES + SMB3 bundle for Christmas. Played the shit out of it. I heard of this game called Zelda and it looked awesome. So I asked for it at Christmas and got...Zelda 2 instead :'(
Chrono and I are pushing 40...from the other side :lol:lol
