Title: anyone else a trophy/achievement whore that's not a trophy/achievement whore?
Post by: Don Flamenco on January 19, 2013, 10:47:57 AM
You don't check the trophy/achievements lists prior to purchase, don't go for platinums/1000s often (have none to a few), and you don't base a purchase on them-- but when you get one, you love it, and you check the list while in game to see if you're close to getting one (and go for it, if so.)

*raises hand*

I gotta tell myself to ignore them sometimes because they ruin my enjoyment of the game a bit when I aim for a trophy and can't get it. :lol

I'm only talking about achievements. Trophies don't do much for me.

I think a majority of people are like this. I don't overly seek out achievements and I never ever try to 1000 a game. But I have grown to like the Pavlovian response of hitting achievements. And when I play on systems that don't have achievements or a system where I don't care about the achievements, something feels missing.

It's like a record to say I did X or played Y.

What Stoney said. Although I 1000/1000'd COD4 because I loved that shit and it felt like a badge of honor.

I go for (or respect) trophies or achievements based on whether I think they prove a good amount of unmitigatable skill.

Which is to say, pretty much none.

Just wanna say that I hate that dlc achievements are added to a games overall achievements. There a games that I have 1000 in, but will never "complete" unless I buy the dlc and get all their achievements too.

Yer high. There's plenty of skill based ones.

Vanquish made me want to fuck a hole in the ground when I finished

I think the only game I ever bothered to 1000 was Fallout 3.  Just don't give a shit, really.

only game I went after 1000/1000 was banjo nuts and bolts, which had multiplayer achievements (i.e. shitty). and then dlc came out and now I'm 1000/1250  :'(

but mostly what stoney said.  although there are a few games I wanted to keep playing and the achievements naturally aligned with that feeling.

cant bring myself to care about cheeves if they aint on the 360 :'(  steam just has them listed so small that i cant even read them, not to mention that i cant just click and compare to other people in my friends list.

i usually go for 1000 if its a game i really like, but as soon as i finish the game and hit a wall i move on. no reason to force myself to grind out those last one or two when i have whole games to start. think ive only got 100% on bionic commando 2009, fallout 3, and mass effect 3. lotta other ones at 900/1000 tho :lol

With the DLC its now up to 1450 :P I actually did this too, since I liked how most of the achievements were tied to completing quests, and the others mostly unlocked as you played. The only shit one was collecting the pipboy statues, because there were a few that were permanent missables.

I have 1250/1250 in Nuts and Bolts :hump

Grade A cheevo whore here. I have 1000/1000 in Hannah Montana and King Kong. Although most of the games on my card are quality games, Hannah is the only kids movie tie in game I've played.

as per True Achievements I have 84 completed games, 40 retail and 44 XBLA

lol, I dont even think I could name 44 xbla games off the top of my head

:'( I've been mostly PC gaming this last year, and even Steam cheevos just don't do it for me like 360 cheevos. They're so satisfying for some reason. When I got Dark Souls I was thrilled to see GFWL. Seriously.

It's probably only because it was first for me but the 360 achievements are the only ones I actually care about in any sense. Steam and PS3, and ios, while I guess its good they have them, I've never actually bothered to see which ones I have when I play something.

Sometimes you forget how well everything works on Microsoft's side.  Like, when you get an achievement on the 360, you hit the guide button and it takes you right to the description.  On PS3 you gotta go into the XMB, scroll over to the trophy icon (that recently moved for some reason), wait for it to sync, scroll down and find the achievement (you gotta remember the name), and that's how you see what you've unlocked.

an advantage Steam has are achievement progress indicators, so it'll let you know if you're on your way to unlocking an achievement.

I find trophies appealing, but I don't go out of my way to get them.

Oh wait, I did spend 25 hours getting the Platinum in Gundam Unicorn.

It's pretty much a cynical business move on the part of MS: they knew that videogames are closely connected to aspergers, and thus baked in a point-led ecosystem that would encourage said demographic to obsess about and gain. Probably the master-stroke was the odd-numbered points total.

Maybe that's actually more about the blatant fuckery that goes on when someone tries to cancel a CC for XBL.

I canceled mine (fact fans) maybe 2 years ago, and it was a HUGE pain in the ass. I spoke to some Irish guy, and I started thinking about that Scientology film about the Irish Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the US.

A good trend with some games are hard-coded achievement progress indicators. Gears of War uses these really well and I enjoyed them in Fallout New Vegas also

I think if you haven't downloaded the DLC, the local console counts it as a complete game; but BK:N&B has that 0 pt. Achievement for unlocking something from Banjo Tooie in the main world.
