To be completely honest, no other game did the whole 3d action thing as good as this game
-
Bayonetta was really good too
-
Gears 1, Uncharted 1 or Dead Rising 1 for me.
-
Platinum Games are the shit, thats for sure. Really interested into how their WiiU offering works out
-
yeah was Viewtiful Joe 2 actually shit compared to the first game? Probably.
-
50 Cent Blood On The Sands
-
Bayonetta, Ninja Gaiden 2, and Vanquish. Next thread.
-
What is an "action game"?
-
Ninja Gaiden 3, DmC, and Epic Mickey 2.
... what? ???

Ninja Gaiden II is unrivaled.
A lot of people overlook the best thing about the game: the survival missions. They were designed like an arcade game - you choose your weapon and fight through waves of enemies until you reach Fiend Genshin. Beating him spawns a chest that contains a single healing item, and then the next loop begins (on a higher difficulty). That by itself would be great, but the scoring system pushes it to the next level. You have to build a karma multiplier by collecting green essence, and enemies will only drop green essence when they're killed by normal attacks; you can't rely on UT chains and OTs to get through everything if you want to score well. It's a perfect risk/reward system.
The scoring is broken and easy to exploit in the campaign, but I don't think it really matters. Honestly, any game that allows you to save during a score run isn't really competitive, so who cares. Survival mode is where it's at.
-
Ninja Gaiden 2 is the one game I will never forget in this shit of a generation.

Mattered a lot to me for NGII-- the campaign's scoring system is what keeps me addicted to NG. Love the timed battles.
i guess my favorite action game this gen is Bayonetta, but I have to admit, it didn't have nearly as much impact as DMC3 and NG last gen.
-
I don't think I've played a really good action game this generation. Games like Yakuza 3/4 and Folklore are great, but that's action-adventure or RPG lite. I suppose the Platinum games are pretty good if you ignore the story/plot/character parts.
-
NGII and Bayonetta from what I played. Man, did I love the shit out of NGII.
-
I still get an erection when I think about Vanquish.
-
Sin and Punishment 2, Bayonetta and Vanquish
-
Ninja gaiden 2. No contest. Bayo is good but Gaiden is more my speed.
-
Bayo is another slideshow combo fest by Kamiya zzz
-
just got vanquish and I cant wait to go through it :hyper
did anyone ever end up fighting the super secret boss in bayonetta? I dont think I could even find a youtube vid of it
-
Also bionic commando had the best story of this gen hands-down
-
Bionic Commando is so good. Really fun game with awesome music and complex stages that you can speed through once you master the swinging. Some nice touches too, like when you fight bosses a second time, you have the option to yell "SHUT THE FUCK UP" and skip right to the fighting.
and yeah, Vanquish is my favorite platinum games game, and third person shooter in general. Sin and Punishment 2 is incredible, too (just looking at other games mentioned here).
I'm mostly listing shooters and stuff. I enjoyed Bayonetta but probably as much as most. Been meaning to replay it and see if it'll click.

LMFAO
I feel so bad because you haven't played any of these other games listed :\
Like, I kind of want to sit you down on Maury and tell you this. In front of a live audience.

I need to but NG2 again. Lent it to a cousin right after I beat it once and never got it back. :-\
Action games are probably the only ones that I ever actually replay.
-
NG2 360 version (warts and all).
still haven't played Bayonetta yet (its still sealed) :'(
-
It's unquestionably Bayonetta. I bought a refurbed 360 just to play it, then sold both to my cousin.
So.fucking.worth.it.
-
bayonetta, easily
-
Bayonetta had a god tier combat system, but some questionable design decisions re: having to do Alfheim challenges when going for a high score.
And the vehicle levels. Fuck the vehicle levels.
-
GO, MUMMY!
-
Ninja Gaiden 3, DmC, and Epic Mickey 2.
... what? ???
Are you serious? I have been wanting to play Epic Mickey 2, provided it is not hampered by an ass-tastic camera like the first.
-
I'm glad to see Bionic Commando receive some praise. It was a pretty decent game. Some of those later robot enemies keep you tense since well you don't have tons of ammo and have to scavenge stuff around you to throw at them. Fun game.
Vanquish is a shooter, but it's awesome. I enjoyed it more then Bayo, but of course Bayo is still good.
I also liked Ninja Blade. it's a QTE fest, but the QTE's were never annoying. The game was just a pretty fun and over the top game. I also thought it looked rather decent.
Alice Madness Returns was a rather decent game, with kind of puzzle esqe combat. Pretty fun constantly switching weapons, it cause kind of rhythmic tempo when it came to combat.
Devil May Cry 4 was also a pretty great game.
-
Alice Madness Returns is a platforner :wtf
-
Alice Madness Returns is a platforner :wtf
I don't care.
And thats why I mentioned it. The combat is actually good despite it not being the main focus.
-
problem is that sceneman said action game, which covers like six or seven different genres.
yeah I gotta stop making threads when I've been drinking lol
I was thinking like 3d action adventure games when I made this thread but just "action game" is what people call games like DMC, Ninja Gaiden etc. I would consider Bionic Commando an "action" game. Genre semantics can be funny sometimes
-
if games with shootans count, this one is the best of the best for action as far as i'm concerned:

Vanquish and Bayonetta are amazing. DMC had a great combat system, but loads of other problems. Ninja Gaiden was Ninja Gaiden, which I can't stand.

So what is a "3D action adventure game"? I am still confused. What did you want to discuss? Games where combo-driven combat is the mainstay?
-
:lol Yeah I'm using pretty broad strokes here.
I'm just thinking any game thats played in a third person perspective with fighting, puzzles, platforming etc.
So like Jak and Daxter, 3d Zelda games, Beyond Good and Evil, God of War, Tomb Raider
-
Uncharted 2 then?
This thread made me pick up a cheap copy of Vanquish, which appears to be about Master Chief sliding around on his ass a lot? Good jon Evilbore
Also reminded me to take another shot at NGII and Bayonetta. I'm sure i'd like them if i put in the time.
