Dumbasses. Lulz.

Anyway let's get waifus and swap codes.

This game is awesome.  I'm not sure there's any player to player interaction over the internet though.  I'm kinda leaning towards this mage chick atm because her character makes a point to use obtuse vocabulary. <3

Have you played Fire Emblem before? I would figured you would say you were above these games.

I've played the first USA fire emblem, sacred stones, and the Wii one.  Never finished any of them because the permadeath mechanic ends up making things a little too rigid for my tastes.  So, of course, I'm playing casual mode right now which has just enough penalty to punish my carelessness without screwing me out of a unit I've spent a lot time with for the rest of the game.

I might do a 'normal' run for replay value at some point.  And srpgs are about the only rpgs I can enjoy outside of pokemon.

I always squeel 'ANIMMUUUUUUUU' when the cg cutscenes show up.  I dunno, I've successfully exited anime fluff a long long time ago and this is my first exposure to it again since.  I'd say it has a charm to it.  Helps that the 3d is really well done in the cutscenes.  I'm a little ashamed to admit I'm trying to follow the story here.  Some spiky ganondorf dude just showed up looking for trouble.

edit: Sumia is such a glass cannon.  Is there anyway to restart the map outside of resetting the software?  I don't lose her permanently but I feel like I'm missing out on giving her exp.

Great game, but man it is uguu as fuck in ways FE never has been before.  Triumph is going to be pissed.

I'm already supremely fucking annoyed that I'm having to wait until tomorrow or Friday to get my copy... fucking Nintendo.

At least I scored a copy of Radiant Historia the other day.  That's been fun to play.

So what's the drawback to the swordsman who seems to crit 2 out of every 3 turns, anyway?
Most mentally taxing part of this game is to make sure no one gets behind stat wise. I'm like 6 chapters in and I realised Frederick has been so neglected he's still level one.

:piss Jagens :piss2

Unequip their weapons and trot them out as decoys/meatshields.  Only exception I've experienced was with Titania/Tiamat in PoR.  She had awesome growths, so later if you really wanted to fart around with maxing her out you could do so but really your time was better invested in maxing out Ike/Soren/Shinon/Haar.

Eh, I remember that archetype from one of the older fire emblems and thought it was kind of a rude long con.  Not a fan of getting swindled in that fashion, so thanks for the heads up.

Frederick should be left behind.  He's the Jagen of the game.  Starts off overpowered as hell, but has crappy growth and isn't worth investing XP in in the long run.

I hate those characters, they're always such a temptation to use. Titania was like that in Path of Radiance; she could clear a whole level at the beginning of the game, but by the end she was a turd on a horse.

One more thing, is there any way to tell what specific stat bonus you will receive by standing next to an ally?  Most of the time I get an accuracy boost, but occassionally the ally will step in to block or dual strike.  Is it random with tendencies or am I missing something amongst the numbahs?

Got mine. Local Wal Mart got 2 in and I ran over there before the Gamestop in the same parking lot opened and the slimball manager went and snagged them.

This Wal Mart's game section is always bare because the Gamestop there uses them as a restocking source.

I got mine from the eShop on Sunday night. I don't even know why, as I haven't had time to play past the demo portions yet. By the time I can sink my teeth into it, I'm sure the availability problem will have been dealt with. But oh well. I can play the game I guess.

Jegans are usually one of the best units if used properly (depends on which FE). They are especially important for low turn count or scoring runs.

You guys should give Fire Emblem: Heroes of Light and Shadow a try at some point, it has a full English patch available (http://www.heroesofshadow.net/). It's a better game than Awakening in terms of classic FE mechanics, level design, and balance. It also has casual mode.. so no excuses about not liking permadeath.

Shows how much you know, tardimus prime.  I bought a 3ds xl SOLELY FOR THE PURPOSE OF PLAYING FIRE EMBLEM AWAKENING.  I also would totally buy it on the eshop at this point, if, you know, foolishly anticipating Nintendo actually pressing copies of a game to deliver for the stated release of it, I hadn't pre-ordered and fully paid for a physical copy at my local GS.

No I mean, the children in this game apparently get stats and skill makeups from both units ie typical dna shiz.

nintendo greatly underestimated demand.

it sucks for people who can't get it yet, but i'm actually pretty happy about it, because this is probably sending a message to them about fucking not translating fire emblem games.

Think maybe 'merica will get an enhanced 3d port of Shin Monshō no Nazo ~Hikari to Kage no Eiyū now?  I (obviously) would pay for it.  (also, I have no idea if that's the right name for the unreleased game from a couple years ago- c/p'd it)

If you want to go legit and buy the FE: Heroes of Light and Shadow cart (while still playing the patched version on an emu) most import stores still have it in stock.

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9g-49-en-70-3uvf.html

If you like classic FE gameplay I think you'll like it more than Awakening. If you like waifus and stuff.. well you already know what to go with.

I could definitely do without the fucking uguu, that's for sure.  However, I played and enjoyed both Persona 3&4, and those games had some uguu as shit moments.  I'll survive.

I am actually totally ok with the decision to introduce what I will hereafter term "pussy difficulty" to the series, though.  I mean, as long as I still have the option to play with perma-deaths, what the fuck do I care?  It's honestly a smart design decision in my opinion- if more people play it because they have a "pussy difficulty" option, that means more sales for the series, which means more games made in the series for me to enjoy.  As long as they don't remove the classic play style where you can have perma-deaths then I could give two shits.

I've always been in favor of multiple difficulty levels and options for a wide range of player skill levels. Don't know where you got the idea otherwise. In fact, FE12 has a casual mode and I'm glad that option is there.

What I don't like about Awakening is how imbalanced it is even on the highest difficulty. It's very easy to break with nosferatu tomes or certain class combos, most DLC, or spotpass. I think it's the devs responsibility to balance their game, not the players responsibility to salvage it.

Yeah I'm sure your average gamer will have a great time with both games - set them both to casual/normal mode and have fun. I'm just doing a bit of cheerleading for FE12 because it's a bit neglected imo.

The retro music in the flashback battle is amazing, can't wait for other generations.  If only there was a way to transplant it as the normal battle music!

What's with the character models?  Everyone looks like SE's DS games, that whole chibi look with sticks for legs.

It seems way too easy to powerlevel your characters with all of the side-battles you can do.

I've actually left the battle animations on for now... we'll see how long that lasts, I usually immediately turn them off but it's been kind of fun to dork out to them so far.

I'm about to disable battle animations. They're not bad, but after a while speed and framerate started annoying me. However I might miss whether my paired up character interacted or not during the battle. Also the uguu doesn't annoy me as much as the dialogue dragging a bit too much for my taste. The hooves I have no problem with, but would've preferred either completely morphed characters or normally proportioned.

I suspect it's to transition everyone for the next iteration which will feature ponies and other types of livestock. It's an emerging, untapped market.

You're not supposed to use your "jeigan" characters in FE games.  Every game, you get a pre-promoted character that seems bad ass in the beginning.  But, letting him kill stuff (or really even attack at all) is a waste- you're robbing your low level characters, who can grow to SEVERELY outclass him, of precious experience and a chance to level.  Jeigans are a trap, bro.  :wag

Don't waste your time on Fredrick, he's an XP sponge. He's really good because the game is trying to trick you into using him, while the rest of your characters end up underleveled.

BTW, is there any way to level your characters outside of combat like in Path of Radiance? Donnel seems like he could be a really good character with that 20% growth ability, but he's just so bad early on, it's hard to level him.

Can't say I didn't see this coming. :'(

I've been actively trying to avoid making him go for the kill (sometimes his counters are deadly enough), so I'm pairing him up with my weakest characters and swap whenever it's convenient or too dangerous. However, that still encourages him to hog some XP.

Are you guys not even taking him to battle?

The RNG gods have truly blessed me... I have 3 super bad ass characters.  My Sumia, Sully and Miriel are all walking (or riding, or flying, or whatever) death machines.  Sully kind of laughs when shit hits her.  "Oooh, that tickled.  Allow me to retort."

With your main character (Chrom in this case, and usually their sister or whatever, so Lissa too I think) promotions are story based.  With everyone else, and I can't stress this enough, DO NOT USE MASTER SEALS.  Say you use a master seal to promote someone when they're level 15... you just lost out on any potential growths from levels 16-20.  YOU'LL NEVER GET THOSE STATS BACK.  Let them auto-promote from 20 to the promoted class.  Very important.

What makes Miriel such a beast is that her SPD growth rate is ALSO 60%, which means she's usually gonna be doubling up enemies.  :rock

It also took me a while to realize the relationships/support opportunities aren't necessary initiated by the storyline, but by regular relation building through dueling/pairing.

I fell into that trap on the GBA Fire Emblem - Marcus? Wallace? I forget which one, but I plowed through way too many maps with him and paid the price in the end. Almost had to start the game over.

What I don't get is why they place jeigans in the game, then give no hint (in the GBA one, anyway) that it's a bad idea to use them. It's conceivable that one could use the jeigan so much that they'd be unable to finish the game for lack of strong characters. Why put such a terrible trap in the game?

I kinda wish I had, but Normal is all like "For Beginners Only LOL LRN2PLAY NEWB" to try to shame you into not picking it.

Edit: Annnnnnd apparently it doesn't even matter if you let her die in that chapter, she still shows up later anyway. THANKS, OBAMA.

Honestly if you've played a FE before Normal does become piss easy a few hours in, especially if you play every skirmish the game throw at you. A character dies every now and then, prompting me to L+R+Start, but it's usually due to taking a clear risk (XP GREED). Otherwise I've yet to feel the type of challenge previous FEs exhibited.

In other words, "LOL LRN2PLAY NEWB" but still hella fun :drool

The DLC characters are pointless since they don't figure into the story at all and they can't form relationships with your other characters. Unless you just have a huge hard-on for Marth, or you let all your characters die and you need some more, lol. The DLC/Streetpass maps are okay for grinding on in between missions.

14 hour discrepancy? That's a lot of reset battles  :lol

Most of it was early in the game (and about half of it was in one battle :fbm ), once I got going good, it was smooth sailing.

How many chapters, yo? I dunno why I stopped playing the story and turned to Wireless challenges... maybe because they're putting up a fight. Normal :gloomy

26 Chapters and 20ish Paralogues, although I only did about half of those. Once I got about 2/3rds of the way through the game, I just wanted to blaze on to the end.

I've only played FE7 on the GBA and my OCD resetting of the game every time someone died drove me crazy. I probably replayed ~10 hours of battles myself. I think that's why I haven't played another one since.

Wrote a review for Awakening (http://www.tbstactics.com/2013/02/fire-emblem-awakening-3ds-review.html). I didn't like the level design and combat but I recognize most people will be fine with it provided they like the plot, characters and waifus.

I havent read the review yet (just glanced through), but I think you should preface what difficulty/difficulties your review is based on.

He mentioned playing Lunatic+, so he had to have at least beaten it on Lunatic.

Sure, I see that, but if I'm joe distinguished mentally-challenged fellow (not to be confused with joe chubby hubby molotov) who plays on wuss mode, I'll probably just say something along the lines of "well NO SHIT LUNATIC+ IS HARD AND UNBALANCED" or rather - why would I care? I would never play on that mode. I'm fine with just Normal / Easy and done with it.

It's pretty easy to trivialize lunatic using certain class/skill combos (Nosferatu) or almost any wi-fi feature. Not much of a sweat if you know what you're doing.

You're right I should post what I played through in the game. You're also right that most gamers will never touch Lunatic and don't care about my complaints.

It is more interesting to read about the nitty gritty details that people like us would never really notice or consider, at least. I think it's a good review. The only part that seem kind of personal was the pedophile paragraph. I don't think that would fly in a publication.

I should mention I like off-the-cuff reviews like yours, not the flavor sprinked ones you see on other sites.

You know what, you should replace that paragraph and talk about the PEG LEGS instead. That's worth mentioning.

I hope you're playing on normal, because it would be sad if hard/lunatic are just as broken. Still kicking myself for picking it, as I only die when I'm being reckless and suicidal. Oh well, I've already sunk 20 hours into this mode, might as well see it through the end.

Mj's review mentioned that the first couple chapters in harder difficulties are broken in the other way, as in "you have about a 15-20% chance of clearing the scenario even assuming an optimal strategy"
