1. Download Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com/download
2. Put it on a DVD or a USB stick
3. Follow the install instructions

It's even easier than installing Windows 8.

You dont even need to install, just run it on your USB (just give your USB some persistent space)

I have a couple of live usb sticks (Linux Mint) if you're just doing this for a hat Ubuntu should be fine

That's self-contained? I don't have to do anything special for it?

All you need to do is download the linux iso you want, have a usb then run that. It will guide you through the install in a fool proof way. Thereafter you just boot from usb on whichever pc you want :heart

Advantage of doing the USB method is that it will save your settings/drivers/etc. So if you can give it free space on the drive, do it.

Although, I don't know what will happen if your stick is less than 16GB. (TF2 is 12.2GB.)

Copy the TF2 gcf's from windows if you have it installed (then verify game cache) and you'll shave off like 80% of the download time on Linux. (In home folder show hidden files, then go into .steam then Steam then SteamApps for the folder in Linux.)

Forgot about the source files, so you can avoid downloading almost all of it if you already have it installed on Windows:
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
source sounds.gcf
source 2007 shared materials.gcf
source 2007 shared models.gcf
source 2007 shared sounds.gcf
team fortress 2 content.gcf
team fortress 2 materials.gcf
team fortress 2 client content.gcf

You probably need to rename them on Linux so each part is capitalized ala: Team Fortress 2 Content.gcf

Trying to get it with a virtual machine version of Linux

VMWare Player is a good free VM. Has video card support and Ubuntu recognizes it. You can drag and drop files to it from Windows Explorer. Should take just a couple minutes to get a Ubuntu VM up and running with it.

Haven't used VirtualBox in a while.

You just lost most of your Friday night so you can install an OS which will get you a virtual "hat," which will only get you grilled by the real Linux users in TF2.

:lol

It would be funny if you had found the long-missing step to generate PROFIT from Linux.

How'd you install the Windows files via drag and drop on VMware for Ubuntu? Use the virtual machine to install Steam for Linux, then drag and drop into the Steam folder all your Windows stuff and then verify the cache or whatever?

I installed Ubuntu on the virtual drive, downloaded steam, installed it then downloaded TF2. Didn't bother stuffing around with moving files.

This is what I did: I started to install TF2 so it did all the prep then paused it at the download part and exited Steam.

Then got the above Source/Source 2007/TF2 gcf's from my Windows steamapps folder and pasted them into the Linux one. (You can drag and drop them into the VMWare window and it copies them.) Renamed them because the Linux versions have each word capitalized and Windows was all lower case. (No idea if this is needed.)

Then relaunched Steam and verified the cache. It downloaded a few more megabytes of files (there's a Linux gcf so it's probably for that) and was ready to go.

Crashed on me like pilon but I got Tux.

well, I'm sitting here waiting for Unbuntu to install on VMware and boot. Shit is so slow.
