Where do you live? AWD isn't really necessary for driving in the snow. A good set of snow tires makes much more of a difference. Also finding a small car with AWD might be kind of difficult.
Are there AWD variants of the Prius? I'm sure you could pick up a second hand one fairly cheep.

The Cruze/Focus/Elantra stomp that in every way that will matter to you. I'm sure the Dart does too but it hasn't been out long enough to say quality for sure.
