Title: Wii U February NPD Deadpool - Place your bets, win a Steam game!
Post by: Howard Alan Treesong on March 02, 2013, 03:09:12 PM
RULES: Post your best guess for Wii U February NPD. Whomever is furthest (+/-) must buy a Steam game for whomever is closest (+/-).

We are not using Price is Right rules - "closest" is defined in absolute value terms, either higher or lower.

We are using the actual number released by NPD, not "more accurate" leaks that come later in the week or Pachter-fueled re-estimates.

Posting an estimate in this thread means you are joining the deadpool and agree to buy a Steam game for the winner of their choosing if you lose. Maximum value of Steam game: $30 USD

BOOBY PRIZE: Third place gets a copy of Iron Roses!

The loser's punishment is actually participating in sales discussion. Makes them reconsider being an armchair analyst.

I'm a bit out of it today but assuming I'm not making a dumb mistake here it's mathematically impossible for both the lowest and highest guess to not come in last based on the way this is set up. So as long as no one tries to lowball Borys or try to beat Prole on the mass Wii U returns gamble one of them will be buying the game.

If the total number sold is 66,000, then I should be declared co-winner with Flannel Boy and Borys should buy games for the both of us for extra humiliation.

Just want to toss that idea out there.

In a research note to investors today, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said that he believes Nintendo sold just 80,000 Wii U units in February -- the same number of original Wii units that sold. What's worse, the Wii U's sales were about half of the 165,000 PlayStation 3 units sold last month and far behind the Xbox 360's 225,000 unit sales, according to Pachter.

And, even if total new Wii U sales were 100,000 in January, that would put an estimate of 80,000 for February

Not that it's meant to be easy to make predictions like this, but I was scratching my head a little bit when I looked at a little bit of historical data after making my pick, here. And what caught me off guard was that -- in the limited data I looked at -- it seemed that February usually marked a jump over January. However, I don't know if that's a hard and fast rule that's always applicable, or if the recent data just served more as outliers. Also, I don't know if this year having January as a five week instead of a four week month in the NPDs would negate that.

Either way, I wasn't going to change it, but I began second-guessing whether or not my prediction was really low. A February jump coupled with some plausibility to the January returns should indicate that February would easily beat January. But, again, January was longer this year and there was no notable release for the Wii U this month either to drive sales.

So, the long and short of it? I don't know what the fuck I'm doing in attempting to make a so-called educated guess.

February is the start of tax refund time, so an increase makes sense.

Yeah, that's one factor I'd considered. The other two would that people are temporarily tapped out from Christmas shopping, and the other would be that January is unlikely to see any notable releases as anybody that can launch in January would have probably tried to fast track their game to being out in time for the holidays. But I just don't know if this is a rule that you can bank on. And by that, I'm questioning whether or not those of us that put in guesses of below 57K were dumbasses for assuming that the shorter month would drive sales down.

No point.  The WiiU is deathhugging itself, and reducing profits on hardware to move more units would be silly at this stage of the game.  They'll drop once the new systems are out, though I can't see Sony halfing the PS3's price in one shot like that.

PS3 is already 189 here, cheaper then 360.

But yeah it doesn't seem like they need to drop it now.

I assumed that Treesong or Oscar or someone had access to the hard numbers. However, I also assume that we're just going to have to take him at his word when he declares the winner? Even as small as this place is, I kind of doubt that we're just going to post it as I gather that it's a big no no. So, the way it'll go is that Treesong -- just as a for instance -- says "Steve Youngblood is the winner," and we all just rest assured that the actual number is somewhere between 51,501 and 53,999.

My reading comprehension sucks, I blame a cross-country move in the next 72 hours? Haha.

"New platforms like the Wii U and PS Vita demonstrated some momentum from the typical January hardware lull with increases of over 40 percent and 30 percent, respectively.”

"80k" gives Shaka the victory, but 40% up on 55k is 77,000, which is closer to Joe. We should wait for a more exact number.

40% per week rise for wiiu is impressive considering it had no new games in feb.

Why do we have to guess and estimate WiiU , ps3 and vita numbers?

Guys, I think the big take away from this is just how much trouble MS and Sony are in if the successor to Wii is doing this badly. As panic Nintendo are the best Nintendo and they'll cut the price of the WiiU and have several AAA sure fire hits - plus it's cheaper to develop for so - given all these facts it seems pretty obvious that the WiiU is going to have a similar footprint to that of the Wii or Ds and the X720/Ps4 will almost certainly be "Vita'ed"

In short - these sales figures are yet more bad news for Ms and Sony and an obvious sign of global domination to come for Nintendo

66,666 still in play.  :babylawd
I still say if it's 66K then we should both be declared winners.

It's not 66k exactly, of course.  Flannel Boy is closer.
Eh. I was only suggesting that to pile on Borys anyways. I was amazed I was close anyways.

Look, it is stretching it just declaring one of us a winner.

As if anyone intended to pay ferrariman anything in the first place. :heh

Please let it be a real quote. :lol

at this point, any group thinking about making a game for the wii u has to ask "are we gonna be okay with selling, like, two thousand copies? at most?"

at this point, i'm quite confident there is no group thinking about making a game for the wii u.

i'd bet there are still some manchildren indie devs out there wearing their square-rimmed nostalgia glasses and just biting their nails down to the quick agonizing over whether they'd be letting nintendo down if they skipped wii u

i'd like to think so, at least

i get so few opportunities to laugh these days

It's not like I was going to tear myself away from Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for another game, anyways. Just wanted to see someone else get humiliated.

Poor WiiU, Nintendo made so many mistakes with horrible naming, no advertising, failing to launch games when they stopped making Wii games 2 years ago, and underpowered hardware due to the Japanese-centric power requirement of 40 watts. The only way the WiiU could have succeeded with 3rd parties was to make it powerful enough to have a vastly superior port over the 360/PS3 versions - otherwise why would anyone buy a 3rd party game on the WiiU, which means game developers don't even bother. Just imagine if Nintendo allowed the system to be 80 watts, enabling a much higher clocked CPU (the CPU was never going to be a true powerhouse due to wanting 100% Wii compatibility), a much more powerful AMD GPU, 2 GB GDDR5 memory, etc. Aside from multiplayer centric titles, gamers would have flocked to WiiU 3rd party titles if the WiiU ports were vastly superior in picture IQ and FPS.
