I just watched the PS Meeting segment where this developer called Jonathan Blow (first time I've seen him) talks a bit about game design and he addresses the things that I'm most concerned about when it comes to gaming. Tight game design; games designed with a vision, focus and an actual coherence throughout the package.
He mentions the issue we all know of how largely scaled open world games impress you with their size but provide little content or diversity.
The Witness is apparently an open world puzzle game that is more compact in size but makes way for a denser experience. He remarks that there are no fillers and that they cut anything that would seem redundant in the way how certain games extend their total gametime.
This guy is on my radar. He seems to have great insight on good game design. And when I saw the trailer for the second time just now after seeing his presentation beforehand I'm looking forward to this game now.

He's a dick.
That being said hopefully the game turns out well although I thought Braid was somewhat overrated although the core mechanic was interesting.

Hating on Blow is for plebes and jelly game designers.

Me hating on Blow would require that I actually care about his games or what he thinks. I don't.

The witness looks like a steaming turd so far. I liked braid tho so I'll reserve some judgement til when it's released and it's confirmed to be a stinker

Had better puzzles, too.

braid sucked tho

Lol I loved any kind of point and click adventure as a kid. Myst blew my mind, RealMyst was nostalgia total. I dunno about liking braid tho, shit taste confirmed :lol

The absence of explosions means this game is art and thus better then you.

i remember when myst was treated with similar disdain as shit like wii music is today
gamers sure have changed
for the worse, i might add
I still hate Myst. First-Person Puzzle/Adventure games were :zzz

I liked the idea of Myst. Actually playing the game sucked though.
And yeah Myst was very polarizing in its day like Oscar alludes to.
It's one of those games that seems to have a better reputation after the fact with critics due to nostalgia than it did during its hey day.

The Witness looks interesting. It's hard to get an idea of what it's like from the trailer. I read that all those line mazes are the mechanic used to operate different parts of a bigger puzzle, rather than each line maze being the actual puzzle.
It's coming out for PC and iPad at release, btw.

Braid was a fun puzzle game.

Always thought Riven looked alright. Never really got into powerpoint games tho, so it's all a bit moot.

I saw an intensely serious-looking man performing a slow tai chi sequence in the living room. His face, bounded by a closely cropped widow’s peak on top and a clenched jaw on the bottom, radiated quiet imperturbability. But Blow’s most striking feature is his eyes, which sit under a perpetually half-furrowed brow and seem always to be evaluating, probing, assessing. His unchangingly flinty expression makes it extraordinarily difficult to gauge where Blow is on the spectrum between enjoying your company and despising everything you stand for.

After what I had to endure this afternoon. I'm inclined to say Myst is also the better game.

Back when I worked at PC Gamer in the 90s that entire genre was referred to as "Dip 'n Twiddle"
