Title: Least crappy laptop one can get for $600-700
Post by: Human Snorenado on March 13, 2013, 02:55:47 PM
Whatchu got, Boritos?  Should I just wait like a month and spend $1000+?  I don't really NEED anything to play games, but having the ability to, I don't know, run D3 at low settings sounds nice.  I don't want a disgustingly large screen either- nothing larger than 15.6" plz, and I really don't want or need anything that large tbh.  I would mainly be using this for school and internets browsing, I basically just need something that will run Office and not give me any fucking trouble.

I could run D3 on medium settings on my $400 laptop. The only thing was the resolution on that thing sucked ass! I'd think 600-700 would get you something decent by now.

Get something from the MS Store with MS Signature AKA no bloatware involved.

I tried!  That Sager sounds awesome but he's probably not ready to give it up :P

McD- that actually sounds like a good idea, and I can get 10% off as a student.  Score!

The MS store is actually cheaper than Dell's store for some of their shit, especially an Inspiron R with an i7 processor.  Granted the Dell one has a touch screen, but that's actually a turn off for me.  PLUS you can get 10% off as a student.  Look into that f'realz if you're seriously thinking about it, Awesome-o.

...fuck me, I think I am getting a Dell

Seems to be the best deal... i7 for $630 after the 10% education discount.

Not very good at all.

haven't actually had much of a chance to play any taxing games on the acer yet.

but in theory it should work pretty well

If only it came with Windows 7 instead.

I have a copy of W7 professional I can use on it.

I mean fuck, for the same price I get something with the option to play games at least.  Even if it is hideously awful looking from a design standpoint.

"Intel HD Graphics 4000"
Not very good at all.
This is actually a surprisingly good GPU. I imagine the Haswell ones will be even better considering the jump from 3000.

It's not great or anything but you can run many console port level games on low/medium settings at 1366x768. I wouldn't have even bothered trying that with Intel integrated graphics even like 18 months ago let alone farther back where I've seen it choke to death on a GoldSrc game. So I was blown away at what it could run decently at any level.

Was an ASUS X202E my mom got.
Specs:
Intel Core i3-3217U 1.8GHz
4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD
1366 x 768, Intel HD Graphics 4000

Not going to recommend it (the Intel HD 4000) or anything, especially since at $700-ish you can probably get a real mobile card in there but just noting that I was surprised how much semi-modern stuff it actually could run, even if it was low settings, at 30 fps or better.

I'm not averse to the concept of an ultrabook per se (love the slim form factor, to be honest) but I don't buy vizio products.

It's a pretty awkward price range to work with tbh since you're pretty much going to end up with more sturdier versions of $300 laptops with the same jank-ass graphics. I only mentioned the Vizio laptop because that's what I use for work but Asus does have some pretty good choices around your price range. The form factor + resolution combination is amazing... Fuck 1366x768

This looks pretty great for $499: http://www.costco.com/Lenovo-IdeaPad-G580-Laptop-Intel-Core-i5-3230M-2.6GHz.product.100029236.html

Intel HD 4000 isn't by any means amazing, but it's nowhere near as terrible as Intel's integrated graphics used to be. It should outperform the lower end Nvidia stuff like the 610M. Diablo 3 should run on low settings (and perhaps even medium) just fine.

There's also this ultrabook with an i7 for only $100 more, SSD to use as your boot drive, smaller screen but same res and HD 4000 graphics again: http://www.costco.com/Lenovo%C2%AE-IdeaPad%C2%AE-U310-Ultrabook%E2%84%A2-with-Intel%C2%AE-Core%E2%84%A2-i7-3517U-Processor.product.100013552.html

I ended up having even LESS money to spend on a laptop due to having to replace a couple tires on my car, so that meant I had to downgrade my expectations to the $500ish range.  I found this, which was a pretty awesome deal all things considered:

http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/pd/Dell-Inspiron-14z-i14z-3003sLV/productID.256223700/parentCategoryID.44066900/categoryID.50787200/list.true

Of course I bought it and then the MS store cancelled my order because it was out of stock.  FUCK.

Which brings us to here:

http://slickdeals.net/f/5575894-Dell-Inspiron-I15-2728BK-Laptop-Core-i5-3210M-2-5GHz-15-6-LED-1366x768-4GB-DDR3-500GB-HDD-WiFi-N-DVDRW-HDMI-6-Cell-Win-8-25-Savings-Code-400-Free-In-Store-Pickup

Yes, it's a shitty Dell, but it does what I need it to do:  runs office and browses the web.  Of course as soon as I got it today, the first thing I did was download classic shell and a few other things to give me a W7 experience while using W8.  So far I can't even tell the fucking difference.  The next thing I did was purge all of the fucking bloatware on this thing.

Pros:
-runs office
-browses web
-has an i5 but was only $400
-the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics gpu is surprisingly not terrible!  I downloaded Path of Exile and while this thing won't wow you, it's playable!  Which means D3 is too, plus a bunch of shitty indie games on Steam, and likely a bunch of older shit like Fallout 3, NV, Dragon Age Origins, etc.  Wouldn't want to play NEW HOLLYWOOD AAA games on it, but it will suffice in a pinch.

Con:
-looks awful
-is a Dell
-case feels cheap and shitty, I know I can't treat this fucker too rough or it will break on me
-case is glossy black, which means it picks up finger prints and grease like nobody's business

All in all, it's not a bad deal on a laptop if you just need it for school or light number crunching work.  I still feel vaguely dirty for owning it, but whatevs, gotta do what you gotta do.

Edit: forgot to say, battery is about 3-3.5 hours, so that's shitty too but about par for the course for this class of machine (ie you get what you pay for, always and forever)
