Title: Ninja Gaiden 3 Beta's Edge
Post by: demi on March 14, 2013, 01:12:17 PM
I'm very interested to hear iconoclast's impressions -- but as someone who could only stomach up to Level 3 (or 4?) of the original. Is this FINAL MAYBE? version worth looking at?

From playing the PS3 demo: no. It's slightly improved, but still nowhere near PlatinumGames, DMC, MGR, NGB, NG2, etc.

Koei Tecmo put out a press release today announcing reorgnizations to their corporate and development structure. The main point of interest is that Team Ninja is being split into Ichigaya Development Group 1 and Ichigaya Development Group 2.

Yosuke Hayashi, currently head of Team Ninja, will be the head of Ichigaya Development Group 1, and Keisuke Kikuchi, currently a senior manager in Team Ninja, will be the head of Ichigaya Development Group 2.

Where is the reorganization?  Team Ninja was already the NG and DOA teams.

Now it's...the NG and DOA teams.

Last I heard they had to switch engines because they were licensing the original engine through THQ. Dunno if they have a new publisher yet, but supposedly it's moved to next-gen, provided it's not (already?) binned.

Sells for $40 new. That's reasonable enough for a reissue thing. Looks like a mess around with for $20 game to me if I were one to care about Team Ninja Dog Gaiden.

It seems like an ok hack and slash now. Not as good as NG Black or NG2, but few action games are. If I can enjoy the God of War series I can dig this for what it is. From my time with the demo, the most effective way to deal with low level enemies is dodge then trigger the insta-kill cinematic.

Seems safe to say Devil's Third and Valhalla are either dead or in the middle of some major changes/planning.   I'm gonna assume the former.

it was just a moment of weakness.  Nothing 10 minutes of umvc3 couldn't fix...and also that horrible NYC stage in NGS2+

I was thinking how much I hate that NYC stage and realized the stage design in NG2 as a whole is pretty goddamn terrible.

General consensus is that it's a decent NG series game, as opposed to an atrocity. Ultimate Ninja difficulty is apparently absurd. People are trying to infinite karma glitch through it and still having a hard time.

Iconoclast can come in here with a more technical analysis I'm sure, but I think Ninja Gaiden 2 is great.

It makes a number of significant improvements to the combat and just looks better (performing an Izuna Drop turns enemies into giblet confetti), but I'll happily concede that it isn't as good of an "experience" as Ninja Gaiden Black. Black has some quieter moments sprinkled throughout that even out the pacing and you spend a decent chunk of time grappling with the levels themselves, not just enemies. In comparison, NG2 is all about fucking dudes up and giving you a litany of tools to accomplish that.

yeah, that was pretty dumb.   it's already deleted.   Maybe I'll do the extra modes one day, but man Sigma 2...how could I forget how boring it is.

I might like NG2 better if the game were balanced better.   Normal is more exploitable than a thai prostitute, Mentor starts to hint at the bullshit and confines the moves you could/should use.   MNM...way past the point of being fun at all.   Having too much shit on the screen at once while being at risk of grabs, guard breaks, etc. is not cool  (i know that's ironic since i'm a big mvc3 fan. but that's different.)

I wouldn't say anything is improved in the combat, it's just different.   The combat engine in NG1 is the combat engine that game needs and same with NG2.   Then Hayashi went just ctrl-C, ctrl-V'ing parts of all the games into later iterations, which did not work out so well.

I agree with this, but generally I still feel like the changes in Ninja Gaiden 2 made it a deeper combat system with more variety. I think the comparison between NG1 and 2 would be harder to make if the gameplay wasn't as iterative as it is.

I never got the chance to play MNM in NG2, so maybe my opinion isn't the most qualified.

Meh, it's a decent hack and slash. It's not terrible like NG3 original was. Then again I'm not bitter due to buying the original.

Yeah I think being a fan of the MvC series pretty much excludes you from complaining about balance/bullshit issues.  :P People have got pretty far in NG2 MNM no hurt runs. It's not that bad.

here's a good example...it's basically all tricks and exploits:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCEn6zugk58

NG1 is about that battle timer, rather than survival.  It's a fully balanced game for the most part, which they had to do to make the timer/score system relevant.   NG2 doesn't really have those constraints and suffers for it, imo.  There's a score system, but it's basically illusory.   though i know Iconoclast likes NG2 better.
