It's kind of like a more boring Borderlands that you play with a thousand other people. I fought one of the world bosses, which was kinda fun, but as someone else playing said "I'm shooting a bug in the butt for 20 minutes".

Rift is one of the best MMO's of all time so it's a shame Trion can't hit gold twice :(

Ya pretty much, but you do get to drive around in a 4-wheeler. You can avoid all the quests and just pretend you're playing FUEL if that helps.

I played it some yesterday and today on the Xbox. Yesterday it was insanely laggy and there was a ton of delay between button presses and the action but that wasn't the case today.
Ummm.... It's not good but I give it daps for being really ambitious. I honestly don't think Destiny from Bungie will be any more ambitious than this game. It if worked it would be awesome. The problem is at least on the console version, its laggy, the combat is floaty, and it suffers from that typical mmo lazy style of design. The biggest problem is the combat and the frame rate on consoles though. If the combat was good you could overlook a lot of issues but the game combat just doesn't feel great. This feels like it should have been a free to play title. Honestly if it was a free to play title, I would play through it. I mean its nice that they don't charge you a monthly fee or anything but $60 dollars is just too much. Maybe half that as a retail product and I could see it or a free to play thing where you were gimped but could play until you kicked in some dollars.
So I kinda have a soft spot for it. I like the ambition behind it. They just don't have to skills and talent or production values to pull it off in a meaningful way. To make a weird comparison Planetside is a better game because they get the technical bits right and the combat right but I actually prefer something more like this if it had hit it out of the park.

Crits are another thing. What the fuck is that. Let me just say this. When, in Unreal Tournament, you shot a guy in the head, and his head disappeared with some weapons, but with other weapons it just did some ambiguous damage, that was a great feeling mechanic. It said that these are all dudes with real heads. If you cut a head off, that’s way different than hitting someone in the eye with green goo. Not that the goo isn’t disturbing too. I wish that when I hit someone in the face with green goo in Unreal Tournament, their screen would temporarily get covered in a gooey effect of some kind, so that they couldn’t see. Most people hated the disc shooter gun. It shot these flat blades that would decapitate a guy. Plus, they bounced off walls. When someone much better than you ran in the room and you had that gun, you could feel a moment of pure chewing satisfaction as you murmured ‘let’s dance’ and held that fire button down. Somebody was going to get their head cut the fuck off. It might be both of you. Or somebody around the corner who didn’t know what the fuck. This was an incredible gun. That’s a gun like the gun that explodes when you reload it.

I'd always get stuck with the gaming equivalent of fat kids when playing UT99. They sucked big time so I would always encourage them to fill every corridor with razors while I take the high ground and nail people with shock rifle + sniper rifle

This game has too many smart game designs than it deserves to.
Like when multiple players are in the same quest area they automatically share quest progress.
Or how it handles level scaling and world bosses
It's completely serviceable. But the loot aspect is disappointing and I have no idea what I'm supposed to be spending my resources on.
But oh well. It's perfectly OK.

Bought the season on iTunes, am waffling about the game, since it appears to be a set of good ideas wrapped in mediocre execution. I am sad, because a friend worked on it, and I suspect it's not doing well.

The cash shop is so awful in Defiance, I'm not sure how they'd make money if they didn't charge for the game. Maybe make you watch unskippable Dodge ads every hour.

Customization options are extremely limited in the game, you can buy hats and armor (one piece) and vehicles and most of the cash shop is like "Here's something you can get by playing the game, but it's a different color!" There aren't really any game breaking weapons either, the stuff you get early on can carry you through the entire game. Plus you can't even pick and choose what you want, you can buy random boxes and hope to get a gun that's a little bit better than the one you got at best, but the rare weapons have really low drop rates. Even the XP Boost items are kinda pointless, since leveling up doesn't really do much for you. You get access to perks by leveling, but their benefits are pretty minor, like "Health Regens 3% faster" or "Run 15% faster when your shield breaks". I've never seen any incentive to buy anything.
Which personally is fine with me, because I hate microtransactions, but I'm just saying.

Yup.
I'd love to be in whatever conference board meeting that OK's these types of MMOs for p2p models. What's the point, given the overwhelming evidence it doesn't work in 2013? F2P offers so many benefits, and while you might not be able to produce a super slick AAA title you'll still be able to put out a very worthwhile, polished game.
