Holy fuck. Their fucking payroll is easily covered by revenue sharing alone. Something something Obama's America.

Minute Maid Park
Public financing: $180 million, or 68 percent

Get the Park paid for by stupid taxpayers.
Get the players paid for by other teams.

Don't project.

The Astros are so fucking bad. I don't care if they won the first game of the season, they made Matt Harrison look like a strikeout pitcher. No wonder Darvish pitched 8.2 perfect innings.

Post by: Phoenix Dark on April 03, 2013, 03:25:01 AM
Are the Tigers considered a favorite? The local sports show I mainly listen to has a "World Series or failure" view of this season. I don't know shit about baseball but apparently the Tigers added some firepower; seeing the team get annihilated in the World Series (on Sports Center) is getting boring.
Title: Re: BASEBALL TIME
Post by: Human Snorenado on April 03, 2013, 09:26:06 AM
They're favored to win their division, but mainly by default since it's so awful.
Title: Re: BASEBALL TIME
Post by: Mr. Gundam on April 03, 2013, 01:08:44 PM
A lot of the baseball pundits are picking the Angels to win the AL and play either the Reds or Nationals in the World Series. But then again, no one saw Oakland winning the west last year, so who knows.

2-0, baby! :rock

I just want a .500 or better record this year. :fbm
Title: Re: BASEBALL TIME
Post by: CajoleJuice on April 03, 2013, 01:39:31 PM
The Jays and Tigers are getting picked even more than the Angels, I think. Mostly because the rotations of the first two are superior. I agree. Baseball Prospectus really does not like the Jays, though.

Hey, hey, hey... don't sell your team short.

That's a AA team if I've ever seen one.

Cajole- yeah, it's weird, but I like it.  That Justin Upton trade looks even more fucking distinguished mentally-challenged now.  Kind of anxious to see how we do against non Cubs/Marlins opposition, but as long as our pitching keeps performing like this we're gonna be tough to beat.

edit: did you see the Juan Francisco homer from tonight's game?  It's fucking beastly.

The Upton trade was distinguished mentally-challenged when it was made, but yeah, he is fucking BEASTING. He was playing hurt most of last season and it's obvious now. He's an animal. You're right that if your pitching keeps it up you're set. Going into the season, I thought the rotation was their weak spot.

Edit: Nah, I haven't seen it. *searches MLB.com* HOLY SHIT
Title: Re: BASEBALL TIME
Post by: Human Snorenado on April 11, 2013, 02:18:43 AM
What's distinguished mentally-challenged is that right now, our offense basically consists of Gattis, J-Up, and a couple other guys (Francisco, Simmons, Johnson) playing at an average pace.  Freeman is on the DL, and BJ and Heyward are sucking, and Uggla is who we thought he was.

At some point, BJ and Heyward are going to have to carry the team this season.

Post by: Boogie on May 04, 2013, 12:49:27 AM
Okay folks.

I'm not what you call a "baseball fan".  In fact, I probably only attend one Jays' game a year, and haven't given a real damn about them since I was ten years old when we repeated as World Series Champions.

But people who I thought knew baseball blew a metric fuckton of smoke up our asses over the winter about how the Jays were now heavyweights and favoured to go to the World Series.

And yet, on the 4th of May, here we sit with a 10-20 record.  And I can't help but think: "FUCK any playoff delusions!  What the FUCK are they doing with the 2nd worst record in the AL after 30 games?!"

So tell me, baseball peeps.  Is this something explainable in baseball terms, or is this just the Toronto sports curse rearing its head?
Title: Re: BASEBALL TIME
Post by: Mandark on May 04, 2013, 01:14:27 AM
The Blue Jays acquired some pretty big names, but most came with a certain amount of risk (age, injury history, year-to-year inconsistency), and so far almost all of their major acquisitions have seriously underperformed.

RA Dickey, Josh Johnson, and Mark Buehrle are pitching much, much worse than the team expected.  Melky Cabrera is looking like his good season was all steroids.  Jose Reyes has played well when he's not injured.  Maicer Izturis has been just awful.  The players they kept have taken a step back too.

Basically there was some overhype (I think Baseball Prospectus still projected the Yankees to finish ahead?) but it was reasonable to expect this group of players to play much, much better than the current bed-shitting standard.  It should even out over the season.  It almost has to.  But they've probably dug themselves too deep a hole already.
Title: Re: BASEBALL TIME
Post by: CajoleJuice on May 04, 2013, 01:33:44 AM
Mandark covered it all well. There was some overhype, and actually Baseball Prospectus had them finishing 4th (I'm pretty sure), but Vegas usually is at least decent with these things and they were favorites in the AL. It's just that literally all that could go wrong has gone wrong. Whatever, I have nothing to add on top of Mandark, really.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I started rooting for the Jays. I even bought a hat. This is why they suck, sorry.

You guys have some seriously good starting pitching prospects.  If you ever get money, offense, defense and relievers you'll have something going!

Jays start the season 10-20.

Jays currently tied their franchise record of longest winning streak with 11.

Your sport is messed, Cajole.

That was an absolutely appropriate end to our season... bullpen coughed up the lead because we had to rely on guys in roles they weren't meant for, and then our guys struck out 1-2-3 to end the season.

I honestly can't be mad with the outcome considering all of the crazy bullshit that happened to us over the course of the season... this isn't a team built to win in October unless it's insanely hot (like those two long winning streaks) because we don't have a dominant starter to anchor our rotation, and our lineup strikes out a shit ton, which is baaaaad juju in October when you're facing dominant starters.

Offseason will be interesting... we aren't gonna be able to keep McCann, and Hudson comes off the books too.  I'd like to see us get a dominant starter, but not sure who on the market fits the bill to be honest, or if we could even afford him if there was somebody worth signing.  Then, you also have to consider that whenever we sign somebody to a big deal (Derek Lowe, Uggla, BJ) they immediately turn to shit, so.  Yeah.

Of course, my main solace is that I'm going to wake up tomorrow and not be a Mets fan.
