Title: Shoe bore
Post by: Human Snorenado on April 08, 2013, 06:49:03 PM
So, my last decent pair of non-sneakers shit it this past weekend.  I need to get a new pair of decent looking shoes that can be worn when I need to not look like a hobo.  Problem is, my feet are really wide but not long- I'm about a size 11.  And, I pretty much am only able to wear New Balance sneakers without getting blisters.

So, to be a total asshole about things, does anyone know a decent shoe to get that comes in wide sizes and is comfortable?  Black obviously.

Flippers. Technically not really shoes, but why are they just so darned excellent?

Clark's has some wider shoes.

I have one pair of 2-year old sneakers and a pair of dress shoes.

I'm an embarrassment I know.

Black obviously? What exactly are you looking for? A black leather shoe? How casual? How dressy? Boot, shoe, what? How wide are we talking? EE? EEE?

Black, like my men.

Does not have to be leather.  Comfort and affordability matter more than style.  Nice enough to be worn in a semi-formal setting.  Shoe, no boots preferably.  EE.

Let me pre-emptively say that I'm sure you could suggest all sorts of awesome stuff, but my overriding concern is comfort and affordability.  Style is a distant, distant third.

If you're looking for casual sneakers, hobodom is rarely far behind. Simple, my recently passed but still favorite shoe-maker is... (googles) still dead, and only go-aheads/thongs are available through Zappos.com and Shoes.com.

Shit.

I have wide feet as well, and quite a bit of trouble finding shoes which fit well. Simples always fit well. New Balance also fit me well, but are seriously dry in the design department.

You might look at Rockport for serviceable, comfortable, partway dress-up shoes. I've had a pair for 20 years, and they're the only dress shoes in which I'm comfortable.

No no, I have nice sneakers.  A couple pairs.  I need shoes that I could wear to like, a nice restaurant or a shitty wedding.  If that makes sense.

I am looking at boots to go with some vintage denim-type gear...will probably have to buy online 'cause Japan ain't about that big feet life

Any suggestions? I like the look of Redwing Engineers, although they seem to be very wide and my feet are narrow

But it's a 'third party seller' with zero feedback. So yeah... I do know Red Wing is kinda hot in some circles of Japan, so maybe there is a store not too far from you that can import your size/model?

What's wrong with Timberland?  I haven't bought their products in a long time but I remembered that their boots were comfortable and durable.  For $80-130, Timberland's build quality is as good as anyone's.

SMOOTH YOU HAVE TERRIBLE TASTE IN SHOES YOU ARE DOING NO ONE A SERVICE

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The first black boot you posted is not bad, I don't know anything about the brand though.
[close]

boots are Rag and Bone

Terrible taste based on my sneakers purchases or stuff I posted here?  The stuff I posted aren't stuff I'd buy, just reasonable choices for Creepy.  Options are really limited at around $100

Honestly, I don't see how your tastes are so amazing.  You can pretty much go into anywhere and cop a pair of the run of the mill stuff you're recommending.   You might as well tell Creppy to go put down $150 at Macy's and ask the salesman to pick a pair of black shoes for him.

no, I top out at balenciaga and common projects. Louboutin at retail is absurdly expensive, even for their plain sneakers. Nice, but yikes. they really look different in person, hard to explain. Not really 'masculine', more 'rich asshole' haha.

Actually understated is just overrated in fashion.  It's why hypebeasts pay for plain tshirts with nothing but a logo.  How much talent does it take to design something like that?  "Clean look"?  More like plain look.

I got plenty of black/brown leather shoes for my suits, nice ones even but I don't see the point of talking about them.  Those aren't "fun" shoes, they're just for business or formal events.  It doesn't take much taste to pick out a pair of formal leather shoes.  Most of the time, you're just paying more for better materials and build quality.
Title: Re: Shoe bore

I get compliments for my dress shoes but I just personally find them boring.  You kinda know what you're gonna get with a pair of $400-500 euros.
Title: Re: Shoe bore
Post by: Human Snorenado on April 09, 2013, 06:13:32 PM
I haven't really paid attention to style for the most part in my personal life, but that's because I've been a fatty forever.  As I've gradually lost weight, I've started to become a bit more self aware and have decided that "slovenly hobo" isn't really an image I wish to project any longer.

That said, I prefer general looks that feel comfortable to prestigious brands and shit.  And yeah, understated is generally my preference.

Besides, everyone knows that socks are where you get stylish.

I can wear the stuff fine (my feet that are disproportionately big), although shrinkage or expansion is always an issue with this stuff. I tried a bunch of stuff at the store that fit perfectly and the dude was sucking his teeth like crazy, telling me to go one size bigger 'cause it all changes after the first wash.

oh, cool. yeah, a lot of their stuff is raw cotton etc so it tightens up a bit post-wash. they're big fans of unsanforized denim, which drives me crazy. all part of the authentic process, I suppose. You'd probably dig the stuff stocked at self-edge. and you can probably get it cheaper where you are, too.

I don't know about quality, but in public service fields like fire, police, and EMS, those boots are all the rage.  They're great for being at the station or on call and needing to leave very quickly.

I wanted a pair when I worked EMS, but never got around to dropping the cash on them.  Do they allow boots like those in the military?

I don't personally serve, but the military (well, air force) is so picky about the particulars everyone just gets corcoran and moves on.

belstaff makes good boots, tho I think a button tab and backzip don't really add up to much there.

While not the subject of this convo, I am personally waiting for these to pop up on a discount site so I cop:

Just posted them because they're supposed to be really comfortable and cheap by Nike standards

Dappered posted some shoes that reminded me of you, Smooth Groove:

http://www.colehaan.com/colehaan/catalog/product.jsp?catId=102701&productId=646866&productGroup=646853

I noticed they are out of stock so I think that you might be right about me misjuding what is popular in mens' footwear these days.

Dunno why, none of my sneakers look like that.

I'm not into Pink shoes.  I've never bought any of the Cancer Awareness Nikes even though they're quite popular.

For dress shoes, at most I'd go with blue or green if not the standard black/brown.

I like the concept of these Lebron "lifestyle" shoes.  You can see the athletic influence in the design but they wouldn't look odd in a nice restaurant like regular basketball sneakers.

Too bad the materials look cheap.  I wish Nike would go back to the high quality leather they used in the 90s.

Yo, macuser, has the price of leather gone up drastically in the last couple of years?

I paid less than $300 for something like this not that long ago but now it's $400+ from any Euro company,

Is it why Nike keeps using much lower grade leather for retros?

I doubt labor has anything to do with Nike using shitty leather.  Aren't most Nike products still manufactured in Asian sweatshops?

Yeah, Yeezys are super limited.  I think Nike sold them through Twitter links at random times.

There are many hardcore sneakerheads at my gym but nobody was able to cop a pair.  Quite a few of them are willing to pay significantly more on eBay for hot releases but the asking prices for Yeezys are just too much ($2000+).

You really must be out of touch with current fashion trends.  Celebrities have been wearing Jordans with suits for awhile.  I think it's dumb but I'm not the one that other people copy.

Have you not seen what people are wearing nowadays even in upscale restaurants?  Fools are wearing tshirts and shorts in places where they pay $80 for a steak.  That's a far cry from even the business casual dress code that many restaurants used to enforce.  When I was a kid, I remember some restaurants were super strict about suit and tie for men and at least button up shirts/slacks for kids.

Yeah but in this economy, restaurants, except maybe those with Michelin stars, aren't going to turn away customers because of improper attire.  It must be really annoying for those well dressed older folks to see a bunch of kids looking like they just came from the beach.

God dammit Smooth Groove you're making me agree with The Business.

I'm not rich, therefore I make my impression with my appearance not with my net worth or Wikipedia page. Looking good, looking adult, looking professional are all important for guys our age. And thanks to the marvels of fashion we can do it without looking stiff or ridiculous. I'd rather dress like Christopher Nolan than Tyler The Creater.

Nice, whose collection?  I want to get some white shoes like those but maybe with more of a gum outsole.

So because more and more people have no class, it's okay to buy stupid overpriced tennis shoes instead of dressing like an adult? Here's where where we differ.

I'm just saying it's OK to try new things.  Fashion is constantly changing.  Like I said before, I got plenty of classic shoes for the right occasions but I wouldn't mind trying out shoes that can be comfy like athletic shoes yet look classy.  Those Lebron casualwear shoes have the right idea but the execution is off.  I said very clearly that they looked cheap.  All I'm saying is that I'll give it a try if someone can design a shoe that is both sporty and elegant.

crockett and jones, and trickers, are pretty popular over there if the internet is any indication. both of them make 12+ but then you have to figure they probably aren't stocking those sizes.

higher-end sneaker hate is strange (not talking about limited hype stuff)... I mean, have any of you worn them? the difference is plainly obvious when you put them on your feet.

T EXP - i'm sure Murka is nice for big shoes but NO-BODY stocks big shoes here. I recently checked the website of locondo, which is kinda the J version of Zappos. I did a search for all shoes (boots, sneakers, sandals, whatever) in my size and got a total of 96 models, most of which were black or brown loafers. As far as I know, there are only 2 actual stores in Tokyo that carry shoes my size

alright, i ending up ordering the Red Wing Iron Rangers in copper from amazon (Global Shipping ftw). I went a half-size lower than normal so fingers crossed. Free returns though so no biggie if I have some back and forth.

Was very tempted by the Beckmans but the decider for me was that the Iron Rangers typically run narrower make the feet look smaller, which is important for average-sized dudes with big feet like me.

There are some amazing-ass boots out there though - really liked the look of these White's custom-made ones

I'm leery of buying anything that I can't try on first.  My feet are really weirdly shaped- they're wide not only in the toes and that general area, but closer to the heel/middle of the foot a bit as well.  As a result, a lot of shoes pinch my feet and result in blisters.

I bought a pair of semi-decent looking shoes from a company called Nunn Bush that are VERY comfortable last week.  Unfortunately, their shoes are all rather boring looking, although they certainly meet my "comfortable and affordable" requirements.  Basically, my entire adult life I've only ever been able to NOT be uncomfortable in New Balance sneakers and now these decent (but boring) Nunn Bush shoes.  While the Allen Edmonds are awesomely stylish, pretty much anything over $150 is a lot for me to spend on shoes currently, and I'd like to know if they're going to be something I'll be able to wear comfortably before dropping that kind of coin on them.  If that makes sense.

I threw out two pairs of borns that weren't working for me. That's when I stopped buying shoes online by looks. I can't risk it with my feet. So now I have to try everything on. I used to buy Simple shoes without a care in the world. But they closed up shop (fuck Sanuk) and I've worn my last pair. And I've been on the hunt for a good shoe company since. I also wanted to update my formal/casual wear with something a bit more stylish and comfortable. My John Varvatos leathers are losing their shine and the eyes for the laces are starting to go, but I've had them for over 5 years now.

Which means, if you come to Osaka, there will only be one store with your size, and they'll only have the one size in a style you don't like.

you can usually find them on sale. common projects are my personal favorite but they are not cheap and hard to find on discount, unless you are a larger size.
