I'm sure it would look more appealing if someone else was playing it. My expectations aren't high, but I'm still looking forward to playing the beta myself.

Er what?  I play a lot of mmos but none of them have the sparseness of enemies and difficulty of enemies this game seems to have.  It felt like and ELDER SCROLLS game where at the start you are weak as piss.  It feels like a breath of fresh air to me.

Actually while i love for this version to be a real elder scrolls game, i think that it is fake.  The map doesnt match anything on Tamriel.

It's an mmo.  It's shit by definition.

Only interesting mmo on the horizon is EQ next with its promise of a sandbox not an amusement park.

It seems they've attempted to shoe-horn in some Skyrim elements into the UI.

a bad first person and decent third person view is going to throw off bethesda veterans

it's hard to separate disinterest in mmos with the quality of this mmo.  elder scrolls online is something I wanted back in 2002 when then mmo space had possibilities.  nowadays I want elder scrolls or fallout with co-op, like the passive kind in demon's souls, test drive unlimited, or journey where you occasionally encounter other players in the world.

Looks bad but obviously it's early; still, expect it to be f2p after a few months, and dead within a year.

Why not just make a Skyrim type game with co-op and pvp for PC/next gen, including an MMO hub town/city system like the first Guild Wars.

Because then you're mixing the streams. I wouldn't mind a co-op option for Elder Scrolls games, though, but let's keep the "massive" part out of it completely.

You're forgetting that they've been working on this since 2007. Back then there was still hope for Everquest clones.

They will probably add some kind of multiplayer feature in Elder Scrolls VI inspired by Demon's Souls or Dragons Dogma.

Yeah, it looks rough, but it's early beta. I think one of the problems they are going to have is pleasing Elder Scroll fans with features from those games that really aren't great features. Skyrim's UI and the Elder Scrolls combat are not quality features to copy over. Those are two things you can really improve upon, but will it turn away dumb ES fans? Don't know, but I don't think MMO fans will be accepting of that UI.

Yea but you wouldn't have to play with people if you didn't want to. Only difference would be there would be some (not all) cities/towns that are player hubs where you trade, form parties, start pvp, etc. And some areas of the game would have the possibility of you running into players who you could help, hunt you, kill you, etc.

I don't want an mmo associated with the ES brand AT ALL.  They finally got the formula just right with Skyrim, don't even let an outside dev shit up your series with a crappy mmo, just concentrate on ES VI.

shut up old man, mmos are the future.  Defiance, FFXIV, TES Online...sub based MMOs are poised to take the industry by storm.

And any kind of server-side features being included in an Elder Scrolls game would absolutely kill the modding community [i.e. one of the best things about Bethesda RPGs].

Anything that's sub only is destined to fail. Even fucking Sega has realized this and are doing very well for themselves with their f2p w/ 'premium' options game. Games industry y u so dumb?

Defiance is pretty good and is probably the most important MMO variant released since WoW. It's the first to successfully combine actual functional skill based shooter gameplay within an MMO structure.

I think a lobby system Skyrim could work. Zenimax is a different studio from Bethseda though.

I still think people are overreacting to early footage. Even the way the player acts in the footage makes it look worse. He goes around attacking anything and everything with little reason. The reason he has a dumb fight with a crab is because he chooses to have a dumb fight with a crab. The game isn't giving him a kill ten crabs quest.

You think it won't, though?
Title: Re: Elder Scrolls Online leak
Post by: etiolate on April 15, 2013, 01:14:52 AM
It depends. People have to realize that there's only so much you can do in a open world RPG (which MMOs basically are). There's fighting, finding, fetching and talking. If you have a more singular storyline then you can do some more linear pathing quests (SWTOR, Secret World and Guild Wars 1 & 2 have this).

An outdated rendition of this basic MMO/open world quest is approaching a NPC with a ! and the NPC asks you to kill ten Mugwugs and 15 Death Bunnies. There's some small excuse for why you're doing it, but the contextualizing is poor and the approach simple. The current WoW version of this is having some story NPC tell you a tale and asking you to bring his letter to some battllemaster, and you go to the battlemaster and fight 10 goblins along the way, and then the battlemaster asks you to get his axe so they he may break a seal on a door, and you go after the axe and there's ten or so Nagas along the way, and then a Naga drops a quest item and you bring back the axe and the quest item, and you get rewarded for all that and killing the ten nagas and ten ninja monkeys.

So you're going to have combat, and you're going to have a lot of things to fight in the world because you're sharing the world with a lot of people, and you're going to run into NPCs and maybe have to go find NPCs and gather things for them or do odd tasks to help out the world. It's really how the game contextualizes and presents these multiple activities that matters.

From what I hear, I don't think ESO is going try to present things in a busted, old way and instead look for a more story-driven more modern way of having you kill things other than some NPC asking you to kill ten crabs. They were going to try the Guild Wars 2 way of doing things, but bailed on it. (It's actually really hard to go full dynamic system like GW2 does.) Like Defiance and Rift, it may be a mixing of the two systems. Will you be able to solve a quest in different ways? Perhaps. I think they talked of that here and there. I seriously doubt you will have a quest text on your screen saying kill ten crabs because Timmy hates crabs.

The environments are beautiful but combat looks pretty bleh. Really don't see how this will work with a subscription, especially with the next Everquest on the horizon.

Everquest Next might make me buy a PS4.

Aside from EVERYTHING?

It's a middle-of-the-road MMO at best, that they're going to charge $60 plus $15 a month for. Maybe that wouldn't be quite so bad if the combat wasn't total garbage, but it is. And hardly any of the dungeons are instances, so you get to feel the joy of raiding a dungeon where all the containers and chests have long since been looted by somebody else.

Will not pay money for.
