Title: how much eurojank are you willing to tolerate?
Post by: Eschaton on April 18, 2013, 10:44:11 AM
I keep trying to play Risen but I just can't. It just feels like I'm playing Morrowind in 2013. I like The Witcher 1 too but even then, thats like the absolute upper limit I can handle.

i put about 30 hours into Two Worlds 2
but i couldn't put more than 3 into Risen.  I couldn't figure out how to actually advance my character so it wouldn't die every time i stepped outside of civilization

but on the other hand I play the absolute shit out of STALKER games, even the horrible 2nd one.

I loved the Witcher 1, probably my favorite western RPG since the glory days of Ultima. But don't really have much familiarity with other Eastern European games.

When it comes to Eastern Europe, the first thing I think of is definitely not games though... :P

-Played more than half of Risen
-Beat Risen 2
-Beat Two Worlds
-Beat Witcher 1 and 2
-Beat STALKER
-Player more than half of Call of Pripyat
-Beat Divinity 2 and its expansion

But I drew the line at Gothic 3.

Risen is pretty shit, tho. Comparing the two (Risen : Witcher) is like... bad

You have to be pretty specific on why you enjoy eurojank. I like the leveling up and loot and stats involved. I'm very easy to please.

side note, i installed witcher 1 on my machine finally.

it opened with one of the most unnecessary long intros that does nothing to even tell me what the game is about (witcher fighting that monster).

I'm from Eurostan myself, so I'm partial to this stuff, especially Gothic and Risen. But even I only played Gothic 3 with the fan patch. And even then it took a second try because the combat right at the beginning turned me off the first time.

Risen is OK, but the world is rather small and the game is short. It also doesn't help that they have you exploring ruins at some point which isn't where these games shine.

It's installed and ready to go. So is The Void. I just have to finally bring myself to play them.

The Void is jankless by comparison.

idk its not that i like eurojank at all. i like open world games with exploring and shit, it just so happens that a lot of these games are inundated with eurojank.

even GTA has a touch of the old Eurojank, despite not being developed by eastern euros

Witcher 1 is pretty bad yeah. Risen even worse.

Aside from the terrible optimization in areas (like the swamp), I didn't think the game was TOO janky. It was pretty stable and I don't recall any lockup/crash bugs, it was a lot less janky than RPGs I've played from American/Canadian/British devs (Bethesda, Bioware/Lionhead).

Witcher 1 is far more janky than Skyrim or Fallout 3.

a lot of em seem like games that i'd love to play, but once i get started i just hit a wall with the terrible interfaces. theres no reason you should have a clunky interface or inventory after like 2008. plenty of good games to emulate in that regard, so stop trying to make me wade thru crap.

Risen 2 is awesome because pirates and voodoo.

I've waffled on bagging that game so many times. Because pirates and voodoo. I'm guessing I should just reread Tim Powers' On Stranger Tides again instead though.

Never the wrong choice, that.

Love me some Yurojank, it's part of the charm.

Finished both Risen and Risen 2, fantastic games. Probably enjoyed 2 more since as grumbler said PIRATES and it's a bit more light hearted.

Couldn't stand the combat in the first Witcher so I gave up.
