Signed up for that two-year XBL plan and bought a 250GB 360 bundle for $99. Smartglass is pretty cool. Came with 2 games, Arkham City and Darksiders 2. Didn't have Darksiders 2, so...yay, I guess?
After having gotten used to downloading multigig games on Steam in minutes, I'd forgotten how slow Xbox downloads could be...good luck with that all-digital console future :lol
-
Why would you do that when you already own a decent PC? You could have used that money for a Wii U in a few months.
-
bedroom tv streaming, mostly
i was gonna get a roku, but i figured fuck it, this way i can stream and also catch up on the few 360-only games i missed over the last 1.5 years
plus i wanted to play that state of decay game, which btw is only 23% downloaded after 20 minutes
-
also fuck wii u
-
Pretty good deal
I might jump on it since I don't have XBL gold and my Xbox is the older white version with a tiny hard drive
-
I know they do it at Best Buy and GameStop, I did mine at GS and traded in a couple things towards it
-
I still have an unplayed 360 game sitting on my shelf (Blue Dragon) so I will have to borrow my neighbor's system again this summer. What's the total price if you add in the cost for the subscription?
The Wii U is pretty great at playing 30¢ ROMs of classic games.
-
61%, 36 minutes
console download speeds :yuck
-
if you bought everything (250GB 360 + two XBL Gold year subs) for full retail, the two year plan comes to around $45 more in total
-
About how much can you get at Gamestop for the older Xbox?
This plan also sense for people who plan to get a Xbone within two years. But unless MS starts shaping things up, that doesn't seem likely.

My Xbox Gold subscription lapsed today

Multigig Steam games in minutes :noah
Shit is dirtslow here. I thought Xbox was fast :lol
-
My gold 'subscription' (Santa Demi :bow2) lapsed recently as well. Saving for dat PC.
-
What happens if you already have a gold subscription? Like I would'nt mind trading in my old phat 360 and doing this.
-
My gold ran out yesterday and I didn't renew :bow ME

My gold ran out yesterday and I didn't renew :bow ME
I had to go out of my way to turn off auto-renewal. My last year came from a certain MS employee who felt sad that I wouldn't be able to play my own game on the service and hooked me up with a code :-*
Oh shit, I just realized I won't be able to see the last episode of Game of Thrones via the HBO Go app anymore.

If I'm not mistaken this thing has to be connected to internet once every 30 days.
Still much better than xboner though
-
Any games you are interested in Eel? I have a stack of games I don't play anymore. Sheeeeiiit, I just realized I haven't played the 360 in over a month.
-
I'll have to go check and see what came out, I stopped paying attention when I sold my old 360 :lol
-
Man, all the clues to where MS was headed with Xbone One are right there on the 360 box. Other than a picture of the two games included in the bundle, there isn't a single other picture of a game anywhere. It's all just Netflix and Hulu and HBO Go logos plastered everywhere.
-
Yeah, it's funny and sad; much of my friends list is "playing" Netflix when they're on. The players who are on games get top-level on the Social menu, EVEN IF THEY'RE AWAY, but if I go into the actual submenu, all Friends are shown, and most of them are watching NetFlix Streaming.
Personally, I prefer my AppleTV for viewing film and tv content, it's much easier to navigate, is much more responsive, and the TV apps on 360 all feel really clunky, and have that lowest-bidder stank on them. Like, Amazon Prime Streaming on startup shows a full-screen low-res single frame shot of my Xbox Avatar for no apparent reason. Search functions start sending the text string before you have finished inputting it, stuttering your search speed. It just feels crappy.
-
Fuuuuuck, that's tempting. I have all the credit from my DS trade in just sitting there. I still think I'm gonna wait for E3 to see if the PS3 drops in price though- I need a blu-ray player too in addition to a streaming device.

Everyone finishing gold at the same time. My sub lapsed a week ago after 7 years!
Goodnight XBL I'll always remember you for....letting me play online

That's a pretty valid joke, but on the other hand, XBL is not just a hand-wave to "yeah, yeah, go ahead and play in that match," it's all the back end stuff which has continually evolved over the life of the Xbox, both original and 360. It's also Beacons, status notifications for your Friends-list, ecosystem-wide Leaderboards, and cheater-proofing. Most importantly, it's the ability to do cross-game chat, gather a Party from all your online friends, and then Invite and bring that whole group into the same lobby seamlessly, while keeping everyone in the same Chat channel.
I know a good amount of this is available on PC, particularly within Steam, but not all of it, and not in the form of an "appliance." It pretty much all just works on 360, and that's what the yearly fee gets you. People joke that PSN+ is doing a better paid service overall, and I agree that the free games are nice, but PS3 users don't get any of that system-wide integrated social stuff.
-
Yup, my XBL friends list is like a wasteland. People are either dropping Gold or just watching Netflix and Hulu.
At this point I feel like I'm done with the 360, especially now that I have a gaming PC. My Gold subscription isn't up until November, but I'm still tempted to ditch the system and the majority of the games I have for it. There's only a few 360 games I'd want to re-buy on PS3 or PC, but even then I actually have two systems -my old Japanese system is boxed up at my folks' house- so I could just keep my favorite games and play them and all my XBLA stuff on that. I dunno though. Maybe it's all the Xbone crap that's making me think this way.
-
I'm also unsure why I still have a gold subscription and if I should renew. I've simply been buying everything on PS3. The day's of the PS3 getting the bad version are pretty much over. There also hasn't been a great 360 exclusive, I mean last year there was Halo 4 and frankly I dislike that game. I really keep it around because of the library I already have, but other than that it's been pretty meh.

But they do allow you to feel good about yourself for helping keep struggling XAML contractors out of poverty

No, it's an Apple product, so it helps me feel superior to other people, including impoverished XAML programmers.
