Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida explained to GameSpot that the requirement is a response to the additional investment the company has had to make on the network side.

It's a good tradeoff for not being treated like a criminal if my connection (or MS servers) goes offline more than 24 hours. Assuming publishers like EA don't add similar DRM to their games, anyway.
I still find it hard to believe Sony expressly prohibited EA from implementing DRM in their games.

As I said in the other thread, it's a bit of a shame, but PS+ is actually a pretty decent service for the last 1.5 years so it's not a big deal. You get discounts on PSN games, DLC and stuff which makes up for the $50-60 besides the free game rental program (assuming they keep it the same for PS4).
I paid for like 8 years of Live Gold and never used it besides getting demos on time and playing the occasional multi-player game. I'm used to it.

I'm more concerned about them decreasing the amount of cool stuff ps plus has since basically everyone needs it now. Don't have to try as hard with games and discounts

As a PCfag, I'm pretty annoyed, especially since Sony is being really aggressive with free to play games, which technically won't be free to play on PS4.
Edit: I'm also loving the cognitive dissonance at GAF.

It's dumb and I don't like it. However Sony is smart because they built PS+ as a service that provides plenty incentive to have and use which is why I signed up already. My sub will last until the end of the year so that means I'll have access to whatever free stuff that comes with the PS4 version out of the box. That's great news.

Yup, knowing I'll be able to have that as soon as I get my console is really cool. It's pretty amazing how Sony has been able to build PS+ as a superior service over XBL.

Yeah, but it still seems like a blunder on the F2P end (assuming F2P requires PS+)
That's my sticking point. League of Legends and World of Tanks are massive games and Sony could have taken advantage of a white hot business model, especially since there are at least four F2P games at launch (Warframe, DC Universe, Planetside 2 and Blacklight Retribution).

Don't really care about multiplayer but if I did decide to pay up I wouldn't mind as much since PSN+ actually gives you bang for your buck.

It sucks, but was expected. I feel for people who just want to buy a game and play online and don't want all the extras, but I think most will come around when they see they're actually getting a ton of shit for the price.
Hopefully other paid-sub services are not behind a paywall like Netflix 360...that is the lamest shit. Even F2P and paid MMOs like FFXIV need to not require the premium sub.

As for the question I payed for 360 gold and i hardly fucking use the thing so paying for this is not out of the realm of possibility.

As a Sonyfag last year, I'm with you. It's the same as MS paywalling Netflix behind gold. Doesn't sit right with me to offer a service like that and lock it when you're paying a sub for something else.
And yeah, GAF backtracking over it is hilarious.

Pretty lame even if it doesn't personally bother me since I don't play much multiplayer. How will it work for all the free to play games? Do you stick on a big fat asterisk "requires $50 yearly subsciption"?
On the bright side, there were no hints that Sony will charge to use media apps like Netflix. Other than the standard PS+ perks, only online play was added. Of course, this could also mean that there will be another 'tier' when the Gaikai/cloud streaming is ready in 2014. Slippery slope.
The other worrying aspect of nu-PS+ is the "Driveclub PS+ Edition." Rampant speculation, but instead of free retail games on the service, we might see these paired down enhanced demos/shareware versions of games on the service. We'll see.
