Title: Ryse has no QTE

Why Ryse is The Most Frustrating Game of E3

I’m on the battlefield. I’m stomping through the corpses of my comrades swinging my sword at anything that moves. I begin a combo, I slash twice and then whooom slow motion is initiated, shit is about to get ‘cinematic’. A button prompt hovers elusively above the sword I’m about to drive into the throat of my enemy… argh I’m too slow! The prompt flickers, disappears.

I missed it. Damn.

But then somehow, for some reason, I still complete the cinematic ‘kill’.

What?

Maybe it’s a bug I think, but no. Next time I deliberately press the wrong button. The kill goes ahead, no consequences. Then I try hitting no buttons whatsoever. The kill goes ahead. I put the controller on the table in front of me, the kill goes ahead.

What is going on here?

I ask one of the Crytek people hovering at the booth – is this a bug? Why am I completing kills when I hit the wrong button prompt? Or, worse, no button at all. Turns out it was a deliberate design choice.

“We don’t want the player to feel frustrated,” I am told.

So the press X stuff is not real? Why is there a prompt then?

The message "you have died" came up a few times while I was playing it but it just kept going.

apparently you get more XP/Money if you do it right

Instead of rewarding players with a gory cinematic for hitting the QTE correctly, players simply acquire a greater amount of XP or currency. But these are rewards that aren’t represented visually; the end result is that Ryse never feels fun to play.

Sounds great. QTEs are dumb and arbitrary. I'd rather be punished for messing up gameplay choices that matter.

Under a pale gray sky, I won't play a Ryse.

So it's what happens when you take an on-rails "cinematic Kinect experience" and attempt to turn it back into a free-roaming controller-based game while modifying the actual content as little as possible.

The game would be better without QTEs.  Fuck QTEs most overused gaming convention these days.

I studied military history as well, with some stuff about the roman military and no they did not.

The romans where no geniuses in fighting, they fought wars of attrition and won them by their superior organisation and abbility to raise new armies from a huge pool of people. If they lost a battle (and they did, a lot) they just raised a new army.

To be able to raise their armies they didnt subjugate new territories but made these people roman citizens, which in turn made it possible to have them fight.

Maybe they just turned off QTE fails for E3 in an attempt to get better previews.
