Sony Computer Entertainment released a new PS3 firmware update on June 19 that was meant to address system stability and introduce new Trophy notification options for PS3 users. While some have been fortunate enough to download PS3 firmware 4.45 without issues, many PS3 owners have encountered system crashing bugs.
If you have not yet downloaded or installed PS3 firmware 4.45, your PS3 is safe. Sony Computer Entertainment has removed PS3 firmware 4.45 from the PlayStation 3 firmware servers and rolled back to PS3 firmware 4.41.
You can use your PS3 without fear of accidentally installing the crippling PS4 4.45 firmware.
Issues with the latest PS3 firmware were first spotted on the Official PlayStation Forums where numerous users began reporting problems with their PS3s following the firmware update -- most being locked out of their systems.
Likewise, people went to Twitter to find information as to why their PS3 froze after downloading the latest firmware.
Early information suggests that PS3 users with a third-party hard-drive up to 1TB in size are experiencing the problems.
Sony has not yet released an official statement regarding PS3 firmware 4.45.
Good jon, Suny.
Did it get anyone here?

Normally I'd say it's the typical PS3/X360 deal where people get bricked every firmware as it pushes the systems in different ways and some that are on the edge of faultiness will be pushed over.
...but since Sony actually rolled back firmware...yikes. Feel bad for anyone who got their's bricked.
-
Mine got bricked. 2 support reps on the phone said it'll be $100 to fix it.
-
Do they actually fix it, or do they just send you a refurb?

Don't know. They both just said that since it's out of warranty I'd need to send it in for service. It's $99 and I have to cover shipping too. That's bullshit, especially with how many people this bricked.

time to buy a ps4 :smug

stability update

stability update
It's totally stable now. :smug
-
smh.
-
It definitely was an update that revolved around stability. Just because they didnt say on which end of that spectrum that would play out it doesnt mean you can blame sony.

WTF, it's their fault they didn't test with anything over 120gigs, they should fix it for free.
-
My system is ok, but I've got a standard 160 GB HDD in my PS3 Slim.
-
Something like this would be far worse on Xbox One as everyone is forced to connect and update to avoid the 24 hour lockout. Or automatic, mandatory updates, etc.
Sucks for anyone affected by this, though.
-
Is it TOTALLY bricking them? Not even bootable to recovery mode?
$100 my arse - this is the perfect excuse for persistent phone rage. Might even get a better unit out of it if you rage hard enough.
-
I updated last night, unaware of anything going on, and it was fine- using a "super-slim" model with stock 250 GB HDD.
Sony is out of their minds to be charging people to fix their own fuck-up.

No, sounds like its corrupting the shit out of the hard drive, though, making recovery impossible.
A lot of reports seem like custom jobs (1TB drives, non-stock drives...) are being hit

That's unreasonable. I suggest you ask them to reconsider, nicely and in a calm voice. If they can't, request their supervisor. Lather, rinse, repeat. There is no way that will stand.
-
Did anyone get the update pushed out via PS+? I checked this morning and mine is still on the previous firmware still.
-
:lol Wow.
And it's sure to affect those that still continue to diligently turn on the console to make sure all the updates are done for when they actually want to play a game.

I think they pulled it beforehand. i'll go check mine in a bit

I think xbox has a similar policy, basically you are updating firmware on your own risk.

Bull fucking shit, especially on Xbox where they FORCE you to update.
-
You are "forced" only when accessing the respective services.
Stay off the service -> no firmware update
-
Been almost 24 hours, no word on a fix, and the phone reps are STILL saying it'll be $99 because my system is out of warranty and this is only affecting a "limited number of users".
-
Please keep us posted. This sounds like lawsuit material to me.
Also, if a firmware patch bricked a 360, and the user was paying for Gold, which requires the latest firmware, you can bet ms would be fixing it rather than facing a class-action suit.
-
sony pls

Sony getting everyone ready for next-gen

So... they'd be in violation of his TOS for joining the suit, on hardware they can't use to access those services?
stealth-edit: pronoun trouble

Sony can't face a class action suit on this. Couple years ago they slipped that adorable proviso into their TOS where you waive your right to join cases.
This would have to be Manabyte on his own against Sony. I suspect he'll pay the $99, thank them, buy a PS4, and still shill for them.
Except MS (and Valve/Steam) have put the same thing in their TOS IIRC. The law really should overturn that shit since it's important to lay a suit when something like this happens. Sony rolled this out, fucked up a number of units because they didn't cover all angles, rolled back the update before more damage was done and is now telling people they fucked up to pay for their fuck-up. Uh...?
-
Sorry but I have a hard time believing anything Manabyte says. :lol
This is someone who constantly finds himself caught in every single bad case regardless of how big or small. So he either has the worst luck in the world or is simply a hyperbolic person addicted to spreading FUD.
-
Yeah, I don't endorse that particular addition to the TOS, and in fact I warned people about it when they put it in, but something tells me Manabyte didn't have much of a problem with it at the time.
It's not enforceable. Don't worry. Almost nothing in a TOS is. All just bullshit to cover asses that actually doesn't work when tested in the courts.
-
You'll have to forgive me if I don't trust American courts to come down on the side of the consumer. :P
I dunno, American Tort law seems pretty focused on awarding damages almost whimsically. It's one of the reasons there was so much lobbying by SIGs over the past few years to try and and hobble Tort law so they'd be less susceptible to being slain by the proverbial Davids of the world.
Though, you're right, all findings on copyright and its ilk have seemed to come down on the side of corporations, not the freedoms of individuals.

There will be a fix next Thursday:
http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Support/System-Software-Update-PS3-v-4-45-SCEA-Update/m-p/40721809#U40721809
They just need to release a download of it so we can put it on USB and flash the firmware via Safe Mode.
-
good to know it's only $99 when my 60GB inevitably shits the bed, though
last of us is beating it to death :(

The documentary "Hot Coffee" that was on HBO last year is pretty eye-opening in regards to tort law/reform.

You mean, in terms of corporations trying to limit their liability?
