A new study published last week in the Journal of Sexual Medicine finds that the average American man's penis is 5.6 inches (14.2 centimeters) long when erect.

The new findings, from a survey of 1,661 men, are relatively consistent with prior research on self-reported penis size. But can we rely on self reports?

"Although many men may wish their penis were larger and may expend significant effort toward penile enlargement, this does not necessarily mean that men overreport their penile size to researchers," the researchers wrote.

Researchers from Indiana University asked men to measure their penis's length and girth when erect, with men submitting their data online.

Findings also showed that yes, penises come in all shapes and sizes: the smallest erect penis in the study was about 1.6 inches (4 cm) long, and the largest was 10.2 inches (26 cm) long. The average penile girth was about 4.8 inches (12.2 cm).

Interestingly men in the study who became aroused through oral sex reported larger penis size on average than those who became erect through sexual fantasizing, the researchers reported.
