Title: Heaven for Leather: Bore Biker Daddies Only
Post by: Mupepe on July 12, 2013, 12:55:16 PM
Who else on The Bore rides on two wheels?

This is my baby:

The only thing I've done so far is flip the mirrors.  My next mod will be making an open air cleaner thanks to some instructions from some harley forums.  After that is new pipes and a Power Commander so I can tune it myself.  Harleys come from the factory running extremely lean.

ROLL ON, BORE!

Sorry Mups but as a third world driver I fucking despise bikers, they are a fucking plague around here.

oh, baby.

here's my new toy: a 2013 suzuki sfv 650. it is precisely everything i want in bike right now, and best of all, i get to say i "ride a naked streetfighter" with a serious face. it goes under the knife this weekend to get an m4 slip-on exhaust, rizoma grips and mirrors, and frame sliders. we call this "farkling" in the parlance of two-wheeled figgurts, and it is a lot like bukkake all over your bike.

and here's your papa ridin' it, sure to make mrs. cruncheon's sidehug glands slather up:

also, the nightster is probably the only harley i actually like and would own. i've debated getting a cruiser, and the nightster is on that short list, along with the triumph speedmaster and the honda shadow phantom. forward controls still kinda bug me, though, and the nightster is a good compromise between standard and forward.

start with a small bike like a 250, or rock a scooter for a few years. nobody springs into the saddle a biker, although my dirt experience helped a fair bit.

also, no joke, ladies FLOCK to a dude on a cool bike. especially a cruiser or a standard. i wish i'd had this hobby in my early 20's. dudes also flock to a lady on a cool bike, but she needs to ride a streetfighter or a supersport. cruiser ladies scream MENOPAUSAL MENACE, just as supersport dudes scream SQUIDDY MANCHILD

the exception is made for a black brother -- take notes, PD -- rockin' an italian supersport. panties ASPLODE.

Wow, both Mups and Drinky have pretty sweet looking rides.

Motorcycles seem cool and all but both my cousin and a roommate got into an accident within a week after getting theirs.  :-\

I've been riding for three years and my only accident was a tire clip by some plastic ho in an suv in the gym parking lot. other than that, while riding -- much like anything interesting and exciting -- can be your quick and nasty death, there're six simple rules to follow to drastically minimize your risk:

1) don't drink and ride. (pretty much a 50% reduction in risk right there.)
2) look THROUGH the corners.
3) wear a helmet. (fuck, wear ALL the gear.)
4) never outride your skill level. (aka "ride your own ride.")
5) ride like you're invisible.
6) TAKE THE FUCKING MSF COURSE BEFORE YOU GET ON A BIKE, AND DON'T START ON A RACE REPLICA. every asshole i know that had a serious accident in their first year of riding was self-taught (or worse: taught by a dipshit friend/family member) and turned loose on a gixxer or 600rr or other skittish inline 4. dumbfucks!

250cc bike. light, smooth and non-aggressive power delivery, generous transmission, and generally a good bike for building confidence without being useless. (they get up to 85-90 mph, but aren't great on freeways due to the light weight.)

examples:

honda rebel 250 (cruiser)
honda cbr250 (sport)
kawasaki ninja 250 (sport, universal starter. ninja 300 is also awesome)
suzuki gw250 inazuma (standard)
suzuki tu250x (standard, looks like a mini-bonneville, my fave starter)
yamaha v-star 250 (cruiser)
yamaha tw200 (200cc dual sport, AWESOME starter AND offroader)

etc

Holy shit, van cruncheon. That's a gorgeous bike, dude. Any videos on how the slip ons sound?

Edit:just saw the comment about the torque wrench.

I don't like the mid controls on mine. I need to fork out cash for forward controls. I'm too large for mids. The nightster is an awesome bike btw. The only other one I want is a fatboy for highway cruising and keep my sportsters for city riding.

I've got the standard 883. Around 600 lbs wet. I like her because she feels really solid even for being so small. I rode a few sport bikes and I just can't feel comfortable or confident on them.

I'm not sure if its different for others, but Harley tires are ridiculously easy to change.

that exhaust sounds really nice. I want something a little more throaty like the big v twin Harleys. Mine has the potato potato sound, but its just too mild for my taste. I don't want to wake up the neighborhood or anything, I just want it to sound like a Harley!

do you do any long trips?
Title: Re: Heaven for Leather: Bore Biker Daddies Only
Post by: Van Cruncheon on July 14, 2013, 08:35:52 PM
haha, "so small." my bike is 447 pounds wet, and the ducati monster 696 -- which it rips off (but adds reliability) -- weighs under 400 wet! it carries the weight pretty low, unlike my aprilia, which carried its 550 pounds forward and high. downtown hills with stop-and-go were pretty touch and go, although that giant sonuvabitch taught me a lot!

when i had the aprilia, i did a couple 300 mile overnighters, which are pretty short by hardcore standards. this new bike needs to be fit for a better seat before i consider anything beyond a hundred miles or so, since suzuki apparently constructed it out of rough plywood and pure sadism. i'm headed out to a custom seat builder in kingston (wa) in early august to fit me for a more touring-friendly seat, and then i'll try a distance run. i have saddle bags (not shown) along with the little tail bag. in a couple years, i want to a proper partial intracontinental ride, although i'll need to talk the wife into letting me "upgrade" to a v-strom 1000 or a middleweight cruiser.

seriously, though, if i really wanted to do a proper long run and didn't care about the condescending sneers of bmw riders, i'd take the piaggio scooter (the bv 350 above) since it does up to 93 mph, has a posh seat, and hauls almost 200 liters of shit fully kitted. (i use it for commuting.)

Good god that's small!  Easier to control if you ever lose balance, no doubt.  I took my MSF course on a Buell Blast which was about 350 lbs wet and one cylinder.  The fucker was so small that she just struggled on takeoff everytime.  So much that it would actually buck me around shifting RPM's.  My Iron is pretty well balanced and has a high center of gravity.  I always feel pretty well planted on it.  I would like to put some bigger shocks on it though.  Add another inch or two so I can have more clearance on deep leans and I won't bottom out so easily :p

Where did you get your saddle bags from?  I'm staying the fuck away from the Harley ones.  600 bucks for a small bag is ridiculous.  I've seen a few guys that do custom bags/seats on forums that are cheaper and a lot nicer, but I haven't put enough research into bags.  A seat will definitely happen first.  My ass is too big for my seat :(

mine are cortech super v2s: http://www.cortechperformance.com/xcart/product.php?productid=380&cat=31 -- they probably look best on sportbikes, and they're easy to detach.

get a little tank or tailbag.

i ride to work just about every day unless i need to haul other folks. usually i take the scoot because it can carry two laptops plus gym gear, and it's less painful in stop-and-go, but on a nice day with weak traffic, or when i have mostly meetings, i bust out the bike. weekends it's all motorcycle, all the time.

How far is your commute?  Mine is only about ten minutes :lol   So I don't really mind.  For me it's the opposite, the weekend is when I take my cage out.  I have to run all the family errands.  But Monday - Friday it's all MC.

Yes they are!  Most of the time on the weekends I'll take my bike and my wife will take the cage if we are going somewhere.  I haven't driven my own car in over a month.  I need to go start it now that I think about it.

BTW I drive through Houston's Chinatown everyday for my commute.  It's quite dangerous. :shh

I just looked up that Honda.  So cyooote! :heartbeat  Diana has rode mine before.  She learned how in a parking lot.  She will probably take mine once I trade up to a Fatboy later.  She still needs to take the MSF course though.

Near accidents are goddamn scary and exhilirating at the same time.  And yeah, it's usually some MF'er texting on their goddamn phone.  Browsing some of the MC forums and seeing reports of injuries it's someone texting 90% of the time.  Glad you're okay though.

My first near accident had me shaking.  I was in a turn lane to turn left into a neighborhood waiting for traffic to permit.  I hear screeching and turn around to see a big ass truck swerving around me, cell phone in hand.  Dumb bitch was texting and wanting to turn left too.  Too bad she didn't see me on my bike in the lane already.  I was surprisingly calm for the rest of the ride home until I really thought about it at home like "holy shit, I almost just died".  I learned to stay vigilant and watch my mirrors when I'm stopped.

hey guys, lately I've been looking into buying a scooter to get myself around and I found this

I don't live too far from this area (like 3 hours drive :P) and the price is killer! I'm still kinda unsure about motor scooter law in California and if they allow them on the freeway. I'm sure a 150cc could get up to at least 60mph with me on top.

does this look like a good deal? himuro pointed out that there's some rust on the tailpipe, which is a little :-\

I don't know anything about scoots, but good advice if you're serious is suggest taking it to a mechanic for quick lookover and splitting the cost (if any, some mechanics will do an evaluation for free).  Doubly worth it considering the price is so damn cheap
Title: Re: Heaven for Leather: Bore Biker Daddies Only
Post by: Mupepe on July 26, 2013, 08:29:20 AM
Since I'm bored (and I love looking up anything on two wheels) I started to google that scoot.  It seems to have a common issue with stator not giving a spark, but that seems to be minor.  However, it seems like you probably have room to talk that guy down more.  I see a ton selling for in the $700 range.  The 2200 miles is pretty damn low, but most bikes of any kind end up just sitting in someone's garage for years.  Tons of $25k HD's from like 2004 with less than 100 miles.  It's fucking ridiculous.  I'm going to keep googling though.

Post by: Mupepe on July 26, 2013, 08:35:59 AM
Your model seems to top out around 65mph.  The high RPM's on the hwy will probably not be good for the engine.  Seems like a city driving only type bike.

it'd be $20k out the door, and i'm on my third bike (plus a scooter) in as many years!

i'd stay away frm cheap chinese scoots. you can get a new aprilia sportcity 125 for under $2k otd, and not only is it faster, it's bulletproof.

so! traded in the scooter and cashed my full grom preorder, combined the monies, and got a little cruiser for commuting/touring to complement the zook:

2014 honda ctx 700. kinda fugly (wife loves it though, but she loves me so her taste is disputable) but a posh-ass ride. gas mileage is in the 60s, and has good torque. quiet and dead reliable, plus the price was good.

took it out to port townsend this morning, and it was a blast. chatted with a gent on a burgman and then rode with him out to fort hadlock before breaking off and meetng my bro for beer. man, if yer gonna use a ferry, a bike/scoot is the way to go: no waiting in line! it's like the vehicular equivalent of being a white person! :rock

msrp is $8799, i had $3K on the grom and got $4500 for the scoot. they waved freight/destination and licensing  on account of me being a regular :'( so otd price was $9600ish minus the $7500 credit, and i paid $2100 out of pocket. not too bad!

Haha I'm getting a seat from Sick Saddles.  Im getting forward controls soon too.  i wont feel like im riding a dirt bike anymore. So longer rides wont be a literal pain in the ass!

2100 isn't bad at all. It looks more expensive than 8799! That's definitely enough savings to justify a dual sport!  How is it for around town? How much does it weigh? One of the things I fear about a touring HD is that it will just be too damn big and heavy to ride around the city. I love using the bike for my daily commute.

it's 517 lbs wet and carries its weight low. it's not the zook for maneuverability or low speed, but it's better than the vulcan 900 i also tried out, by a country mile. it feels like it weighs nothing.

i like the camaraderie of motorbiking. dudes and ladies who ride will always chat you up, and are often game to join you in riding for awhile. squids are annoying, but the older folks and younger nonsquids are usually a fun albeit boozy crowd. don't drink and ride!

Maybe they're just more friendly in your area.  :(  I don't ever have anyone ride up with me.  So many squids and rubs in my area.  The older guys will give you a wave at least and some will chat you up.  I like that coming from the Corvette world (they do the same).

Get an HD, Wrath!  I need a bro!!  And the V twins are easy as balls to work on.

Rub - Rich Urban Biker.  Someone who buys a bike on a whim for a toy or status symbol.  They'll tell you they have a bike but they never ride it.

squids are kids and/or dumbasses who wear no gear and do dangerous shit in traffic. they typically ride race replicas they can't control well, and they make everyone hate motorcyclists. if you see a tattooed bro in a tank top, board shorts and flip-flops tank humping a cbr600rr or gixxer (gsx-r), possibly doing a clutch wheelie, that's the quintessential squid.

Was talking to a guy here at work who has been riding since the 70's.  He said he'd almost always gone riding without a helmet.  He's a fomer motorcycle LEO and he was showing me pictures and videos of him spanking the LEO course (fucking awesome as hell to see BTW).  But then he showed me pictures of an accident he had in 2000.  A car thought they had cleared him and moved into his lane clipping his front tire.  He spent ten days in a coma.  Then he showed me a baseball cap that he had been wearing at the time.  You could stick your whole hand through a hole in the top.  He keeps it in his office to remimd him how stupid it is to ride without a helmet and how goddamn lucky he was.

I don't know how that experience would translate to american cities, but in a city in europe small bikes/scoots are king.
Title: Re: Heaven for Leather: Bore Biker Daddies Only
Post by: brawndolicious on August 06, 2013, 09:00:56 AM
Rome was unique since not only are the cars smaller like the rest of Europe, literally like a third of the vehicles on the road are scooters so car drivers are probably a bit more aware of motorcyclists. Plus I think a lot of the roads didn't have lane-markers which kind of makes it anything goes as far as lane changes.

I'm glad you're coming back to 2 wheels, Biz!  American car drivers need to be educated on motorcycles and bikes IMO.  A lot of them take the stereotypes off TV and apply it to all riders.  Most also don't understand the difference between the two.  They cut you off and slam on their brakes without thinking about how much more difficult and dangerous it is on a bike.  A lot of my family changed the way they drive around motorcycles and the way they see them after I got mine.

scooters are awesome, especially in the city. i steal my wife's pcx 150 all the time, and rocked a bv 350 for over a year.

the biz: check out the new ninja 300. even the pros love 'em.

and yeah, i wish we could legally lane split here in wa, but ragey cagers would never let it happen... :-(

My step father commutes on a bike and had a jackass pull out in front of him last week....brakes locked up and went sliding something like 200 feet.  He was fine except for a bunch of bruises and major road rash. The fuck who cut him off just kept going like nothing even happened.

Harley is coming out with a new 500 CC bike.  Parts are manufactured in India, shipped to the US and assembled (lots of Harley people are pissed *shrug*).  60 HP, less rake and trail and around 450 lbs.  Should be pretty damn agile.  DOHC and DFI too.  It'll knock the goddamn pants off the sportsters in performance apparently.  It will also be water cooled.  Oh well, I love the look of my 883 and I'll be upgrading to Road King in the next year or so...

Not gonna lie.  The Diavel and Z1000 are both gorgeous bikes, but just not my style brochacho.  Just something about the Harley touring bikes could make me fuck a million midgets in the ass just to hit the kill switch.  om nom nom nom.

The prices were ridiculously low, but they weren't really willing to haggle further and I don't give a shit because I've already got my bike so there was no deal to be made.  I did see a Super Glide Custom that was about $4k off, but if I'm going to fork out more money I'm going for a softail at least.  The sporty and dyna frames are just too small for me.

If you need a home for your sporster let me know.

I just took possession of my father in laws 93' dyna wide glyde this week. Thing has some amazing pipes on it, but I'm scared shitless to drive it. Way too many modifications to it that I have no idea where to even begin with how to tune it to something rideable for me. In order to register the bike with the DMV they made me take the written test for both Motorcycle and Car. I wasn't prepared since I was just there to get everything sorted out, thankfully I passed. So now I've got a provisional motorcycle license so I can go take some classes, then later take the test. I want to ride so badly though, we've got such beautiful weather around here and fantastic roads to travel on here in california.

I'm exposed to a different lifestyle here due to Roxanne's father and his affiliation with biker clubs. It's a very interesting group of people who seem to be attracted to the clubs. We went to a Red & White event for friends and family and it was hard to believe some of those guys are hardcore Hells Angels. These guys (and gals) are so unassuming that you'd never even know, and thats probably a good thing for them. Roxanne's father Frank is part of two clubs one for BACA (bikers against child abuse) and the local Red & White chapter. Both of which have a strong familial bonding that almost reminds me of a cult. It explains why so many guys are willing to take the fall for one of their "brothers" and why Frank was put away for so long. I kind of feel for him cause while it might seem  healthy to have a united cause, it comes with a price and they tend to prey on those that will be loyal to the cause no matter what happens.

also, man, v-rods are going for a song around here. i almost broke and bought a beautiful 2006 custom for 6k -- totally chromed out, never dropped, 3k miles, rode impeccably :drool

MAF has the right idea 4 nuts on two wheels dont work, bro.

I think the new smaller class of bikes is a smart direction for Harley. They can still spout the Harley brand which is extremely powerful but is more along the lines of what younger riders and emerging markets want. I've got a coworker in India who can't wait because they will be built there so they will be cheap as fuck and currently the cheapest Harley is about his annual salary. They're not for me though. The small Harley v twins tend to be hogs (lol). My 883 feels underpowered as it is. I'm part of the diminishing Harley market that like them big, flashy, powerful but slow. I'm ready for an old mans bike already. Thats fucking comfort and style all the way.

Those v rods are incredible. I love, love, love the unique look. Futuristic with a classic touch and a powerful engine to boot. If I had spare money I would get one, but priority is on a road king or other more classic style cruiser.

G, if you're serious about it let me know dude.

Well I had the closest call yet today. I really thought I was going to die. The truck from two lanes to my right decided he wanted to be in my lane so he could turn left. Traffic was stopping front of us so not only does he swerve into my lane but he slams on his brakes.  Luckily I saw him coming from the right so I had time to brake or else he would have side swiped me. I missed his rear bumper by inches as he got into my lane. I had to pull over for a few to get the jitters out

Hey Drinky.  I know you love touring so maybe this will interest you.  A dual pack Sena Bluetooth speaker and mic system (399 retail) for $199.96 shipped.  At the very least you can sell one for about 160-170 and have a really awesome speaker system in your helmet.

Dear sweet baby jesus!!!  Gorgeous!

I don't do any group riding, but the music is nice and access to calls is sometimes necessary.  I am going to pick up my first full face helmet.  I'm choosing a Shoei Qwest and it's basically designed for this Sena model and everyone said they work awesome together.  Can't wait.  I'm going to be prepared this winter.  Not like last time!  NO FROZEN FINGERS FOR ME!

On another note - I have finally begun the actual process of searching and before the end of this year, probably in October when I am switching to an office 35 miles from home, I'll buy a 2014 or 2015 Road King.

This is the exact color and model of the one I have my eye on...

hey Cruncheon.  What would you recommend as Road King alternative in the 20k range?  I'm still in love with the Road King.  But some recent decisions by Harley and the fact that they are overpriced does have me looking at other options.  I really like the Triumph touring bikes.  It comes with everything I want on my road king for $6k less out the door, but fuck is it ugly.

victory makes a good bike, as does indian. (both are polaris.) both have much smoother, torquier engines. both the victory cross country and the vision are great, but you might not like crazy hugo gernsbaack stylin' of the vision. for a more standard "classic" cruiser look, the indian chieftain is nice.

for metrics, i prefer the suzuki boulevard M90 (or C90, which is more traditional touring kit). it's torquey, bulletproof, and has classic cruiser looks. around here, if it's not an h-d, it's probably one of the 90ci boulevards. (i like the blacked out b.o.s.s. models.) if you REALLY want sick power, the m109 is absurd as hell and has the fattest back tire i think i've seen on any bike, even a v-rod. the yamaha star stratoliner s and roadliner s (1900cc, i think?) are popular and again, like most metrics, reliable and indestructable.

the big honda -- the vtx1800 -- is really boring. i rode a vtx1300 and i almost fell asleep. give me a harley any day over THAT. the valkyrie is awesome as an alternate cruiser, but there's no touring kit for it -- that's the niche for the goldwing f6b. (goldwings are AMAZING as long haulers and much easier to throw around than a big h-d, and they're significantly quicker to boot. on the other hand, they're goldwings.)

never tried or seen the big kawi vulcan nomad (1700? cc). i like kawi a ton -- they're called the "h-d of japan" because they focus less on electronics and more on raw experience and an almost agricultural feel to their engines -- so it might be good? would be interested in checking the nomad out myself at some point.

hm, triumph has the thunderbird (which i love, the parallel twin is just different enough for me to be interested) and the terrifying 2300cc rocket iii, which murders lesser men. (seriously, it will haul with throttle at stop while you eke the clutch out, there's THAT MUCH TORQUE fighting to get out.) the little triumphs like the speedmaster/america compete with the sportster, so they're a no-go for you.

i guess of all of them, i'd go with a C90 in full touring kit or the yammy stratoliner s. both will come in right under 20K when all is said and done, and both will spank any larger displacement non-cvo h-d 108ci bike. if the victory bikes looked less crazy retro-future, i'd consider them. (still considering a victory gunner, but not as a touring bike.)

I really don't like most fairings so that's what turns me off on the Chieftain.  An Indian Chief Vintage looks great.  I plan on test riding one soon.  Any experience with it?

I gotta say that M90 looks sexy as fuck and the price :o   The fairing is small enough not to bother me.  The C90 is more my style though.  I love the minimal look of the non touring (Road King being the exception) HD bikes.  The classic cruiser look is what gets me wet.  The M109 doesn't really grab me the same way.  I'll test ride the C90 and M90 and see how that goes.

Yeah I've ridden a few Honda's and spoken to their owners and the consensus is basically :zzz      And Goldwings do nothing for me aesthetically

Jesus Christ.  Okay.  This is basically what I'm looking for.  It's aesthetically and feature-wise what I want out of the Road King.  Test ride here I fucking come.

Yeah I took a look around the Triumph website and dealer but I just really don't care for the styling.  The chassis of their cruisers just look awful to me.  Feature and price wise they are fucking great though.

Quote

So basically out of these I am going to check out the Suzukis and the Kawasaki Vulcan.  Both seem like my style and a great value.

The Victory Gunner is sexy, but I want to do some real touring with the wife riding cupcake.  She seems a little small for that.  and Cross Country Chassis is sexy but that fairing  :yuck   I see so many fairings ruining sexy scoots :(

I'm assuming there's also a keyless start/security option with this bike.  that would be perfection.  I got used to that in my 2007 Corvette and it's so fucking hard going back to using a key (I know I sound like a spoiled bitch, but whatevs).  I love that the option comes standard on the C90

So my Sena SMH10 came in today.  I hooked it up (easy as hell), charged it (the wait was torture!) and then took off on the road.  I heard people complaining that they couldn't hear it at highway speeds.  I don't know what the hell they were smoking.  I used the pads to move the speakers closer to my ears and coming from someone that drives around with music at full blast in my car and my headphones are always at full blast this shit was loud enough to make my ears ache at highway speeds with the face mask open.

My wife called me while I was going 70 on the freeway and I could hear her perfectly and she could hear me.  She had to ask if I was on the freeway yet because she couldn't hear any background noise.

The dial is intuitive as hell and easy to use.  There's only two buttons (one also doubles as a dial).  and it's a combination of pressing the buttons and turning the dial.  For example, push the dial in and turn it to change songs.  Press the phone button to answer the phone when you get a call.  But it also works with Windows Phone voice commands so I can tell it to make a call or change the song.  Or I can just say "Hello" when I receive a call and it will pick up.

10/10  Fucking Awesome.  A steal at 199.96 for two.

Oh my god.  I got to ride the Nomad this morning.  OH MY GOD.

The torque is out of this fucking world.  You feel stuck to the goddamn ground and it feels great.  The suspension isn't as comfy as the Road King and it seems like a harder to navigate at parking lot speeds.  The seat is comfy as fuck though and the ergonomics are great.  The exhaust is lacking that oomph but that's easily fixable.

I'll have more time to ride it out and get a better feel though.  A guy here at work owns one so I rode it around this morning and I'll be able to ride a bit more later today.  I need to at least have my wife sit on it with me though.  It seems like the design of the frame would have her sitting REALLY close when we ride 2up.  One of the things I like about the Road King is that there is plenty of space between both of us.  It's confusing considering that Nomad is even longer and wider than the Road King.

man, my daughter LOVES it.

it rides smooth -- at 60 hp and 60 lb. ft of torque, it's pretty much what you'd expect from a light 900cc touring cruiser. easy to throw around, and the parallel twin is mellow. unlike the z1000, my license will NOT be at risk on this bike, which makes the ol' lady happy. the two-tone ultramarine blue is growing on me, the controls are between mid and forward and are pretty comfy, and my daughter's enthusiasm is infectuous. i could adapt to the cruiser life...

I'm telling you man the cruisers are addicting.  And you've got a gorgeous one.  I love the true dual exhaust you've got going on too as well as the floorboards.  Little stuff like that is what makes my little Harley such a pain.  I love the style and the ride of it, but to get the little knick knack comforts/styles I have to mod the hell out of it when in the end it would be cheaper to just upgrade to a bigger bike.

Shame about the chrome?  I think she's sexy!   I love my chromed cruisers though.... You will too when you come out from buying a Big Gulp and see her glistening in the sun ;)

here's my baby after a 300 mile "break-in" ride:

the kawi looks a bit pissed. anyway, i yanked the windshield and i'm gonna replace it with a smaller screen -- i wear a full-face helmet and there's too much distortion looking through it AND a giant windshield. also, the windshield vibrates a little at 75+ mph on the superslab and that's doubly annoying. also, the seat is getting replaced with something stiffer that has a backrest -- my traps were KILLING after mile 200. other than that, it's a champ. kept up with some bigger bikes easily and i started the process of shaving my poor flooarboards down in the corners in good form -- the dude riding with me said i was throwing up sparks in every corner like a motherfucker :'(

slash cut straights sound AWESOME. i was one of the loudest bikes in the group. I SAVE LIVES, CUNTS

Jesus.  So much wrong in that video.  He was going way too fast and the driver wasn't paying attention.  In the US that's what I mostly read about too, except here it's people taking left hand turns without seeing bikers.  Those are usually the ones I'm paranoid about the most.  Impatient drivers thinking they can make it before me.  I'm also not a fan of high speed on my bike.  That does nothing for me (hence the Harley) and it also just makes an already dangerous hobby that much worse.

Btw, I spent some time on the Kawasaki. It has some incredible torque and features but in the end I think I am still going for my road king. Low speed maneuvering feels top heavy, exhaust is weak and the seat isn't my favorite. All fixable and not deal breakers by any mean but there's just something intangible I like about the road king more. For the 2014 models the price difference isn't that big and I figure fuck it, might as well get what I really want.

I'm at the dealer trying to make this happen. Lets see if we can agree. It's used. 2900 miles. Aftermarket exhaust, wide breather AC, dyno tuned with dyno jet monitor installed, aftermarket mustang seat and passenger pillion both w/ backrests, highway pegs, vented windshield, alarm and ABS.  Its also the color I wanted and still has 22 months of warranty left. I'm trying to make 18k happen OTD.

Not yet. The only thing its really missing is the tourpak for luggage (at least what I will need) and I can wait on that. It was an impulse purchase so I tried to minimize the damage haha   I walked into the dealership to look at rain gear and before I knew it I was haggling OTD price. Oh well!!

I had been eyeing this exact color at another dealer for the last couple of months but they wouldn't meet my numbers OTD and they sold the bike a couple of weeks ago. Walked into the ducati/kawa dealer yesterday and she was sitting there and they hit my numbers with no issue. With only 2900 miles on the clock the previous owner basically bought me a bunch of upgrades, paid for my 1000 mile service and got me 20% discount off retail. Thanks, dude!!

Hell yeah you can. Life is better on two wheels no matter what it is. Cruncheon has experience with scoots too.

Regarding dealers most brand forums (like Harley forums, Yamaha forums, etc) have threads about dealers rating their experiences. Search those forums and look for your nearby dealers. Or just start a thread and see who knows a good ahop/dealer in your area.

When I do start riding to work that will be a minimum of 350 miles a week. I'm gonna pack the miles on this sucker. This is amazing.

Now that I have a proper touring bike and I find my weekly mileage constantly escalating I am thinking about doing a long distance challenge or trek in a year or so.

Next year I am doing a trip to Washington DC with the wife.  After that I think I'm going to prep for a 50 states in 10 days trip.  It'll come in at around 9000 miles in ten days and I think I can do it.

if you do it, stop up here and i'll join you for a leg of it! we can visit dumpsters across the upside of the mason-dixon.

i put down almost 16k miles this year. the car didn't even get 4k. the beamer ate most of the miles since i bought it in february/march -- almost 9k.

in sad news, the z1000 died after a bad dealer prep/servicing made the gearbox melt down (needed oil in it, i thought it shifted rough since i got it but i foolishly ascribed that to literbike character) and decided to huck me into the road a month back. after warranty and insurance payments i bailed on it (really loved it, but insurance declared it totaled and cut some deal with kawi warranty services so the salvage title went back to kawi), and i got this:

2014 street triple r. the payout also let me buy a bunch of mods for it i plan to use this wet fall/winter to install: arrow 3-1 full exhaust and tuning kit, powercommander v tuner, rizoma grips and bar end mirrors, flyscreen, fender eliminator, belly pan, sw-motech frame sliders. debating getting round headlights to replace the mantis eyes but i hear they aren't so great for evening riding...

Damn, man.  Sorry to hear about the z1000 but that's a sweet lookin scoot you have now!

Have you toyed with the powercommander yet?  I've been messing with mine and I've been able to tweak to run much better than stock.  It's a cheap investment for when I get a heavy breather and new headers in a couple of months.  Dyno tunes are expensive as all fuck.

I'll definitely stop up that way.  I believe the route for the West coast cuts through Bellevue.  I've got the touring bug.  I've averaged 350 miles a week since I've gotten it and next week I'll start riding it to work which will be in itself 400 miles per week (80 mile round trip commutes suck, breh).  The addition of saddlebags and a decent passenger seat just makes it much easier to do in town errand runs on the bike.  Plus it helps that I can stay on it for hours and still be comfy.  I love it.

Hey, so I think I mentioned it earlier but I'm looking into winter gear now (stopping for gloves on the way home).  Any advice?  I've been looking at Olympia and Tourmaster specifically.  I don't want to get heated gear because I'm not sure Houston gets that bad.  In the worst of winter it averages around 30-40 degrees at 5am which is when I'll be hitting the road.

I want waterproof and something that will be okay at that temp on highway speeds for about 40 minutes.  I mean, shit.  Last year I did winter with no gloves and just doubled up on shitty jackets and pants and a half helmet.  So I think if I can get some real gear I can be pretty damn comfy this year.

haha, you're officially hardcore now!

haven't installed the powercommander yet -- gonna do that when i have a nice free weekend. friend's shop has a dyno i'll need to finish the exhaust tuning. the striple has good throttle response and fueling stock, but i'd like to shorten the first gear response up, plus the new exhaust will bump me up to 115ish hp at the crank.

i have some rev'it waterproof winter gloves that aren't too thick, which i love -- i'll check the info on them when i get home tonight. since it rains nonstop in the fall/winter hear, i also have tourmaster overpants which do a GREAT job keeping me warm, and i can just peel 'em off when i arrive at work.

can you link me to your tourmaster pants?  Gloves are first for me since the rain won't show up here in Houston January or so.  November and December are generally dry winter months.  But man my hands are freezing after 40 minutes at 50 degrees.  How do those gloves handle ~20 degrees?  a few times a year it gets that low here in the early mornings.  a good jacket and pants are in line for the middle of next month.

Having access to the dyno is awesome though!  How much does your bike weigh?  She doesn't look big and 115 hp sounds insane for it.  I've been using the autotune feature and then slowly tweaking it on my PC trying to get different tunes for city traffic, highway/mpg, power, etc.  It's really fun to play with and it really helps you learn out the nuances of your motor and the way it "feels" at certain RPM's.  I'm generally looking for more low end torque for city because the Harley 103's tend to lug and prefer the higher RPM's which sucks ass for cruising around the city.  But there's only so much you can do before you start talking about changing mechanical parts.  I just always find myself either pushing towards the high end of RPM's to high a speed limit or lugging the next year so that I don't actually speed.

Speaking of mechanical upgrades, I'll probably be doing a cam install early next year.  Something to get me closer to that potato-potato sound (even though you can't truly get it there anymore) and give me some more low end torque.  I've been reading up on it and watching videos.  Seems easy as fuck compared to changing out a car's cam which I've already done before.  I'm also going to upgrade the tensioners and compensator while I'm in there.

It's nice to have a bike that I plan on actually keeping so I don't mind shelling out the money to mod it now.

right now, before fitting the exhaust, the street triple r is 405-ish lbs. wet. after i install the full arrow 3-1 kit, it'll lose 10 lbs and be right under 400. :-D

torque-wise, harley engines put out max torque at around 2-3K rpms and have massive falloff after that, which is the reverse of supersports, who have max torque/hp high in the rev range. the pushrod and cam design, even in the modern 103/110 engines favor that big hit of early torque to get moving, but you need to shift up quickly (short shift) to keep in the band. only the v-rod builds power like a sport, and has a shockingly flat torque curve -- it puts down 70 ft lbs from 2-9k rpm (it revs higher than the freedom engines).

both my triumphs are the same way -- they put down significantly less max torque (47 ft. lbs for the street triple and 60 ft. lbs for the america) than a harley, but they do so from about 2-3k all the way to nearly redline. both of them can ride 1st gear smoothly up to 50 mph, although i still short shift 'em in town.

Post by: Mupepe on October 31, 2014, 10:23:06 PM
Good to know, man. Thanks. I am still learning about the power band differences between bikes and cars and between Harley and other makes.

I do find myself shifting at around 3100 rpm's. I've been going by feel. The sweet spot for torque response is at 2400-2800 rpms and if I am in that range I can accelerate like a bat out of hell. Above 3500 RPM's she feels like she has nothing left. Its definitely a lot different than my sporty.

Any opinion on alpinestars? I saw their polar gore tex gloves and they looked pretty awesome. No tourmaster so I gotta make another stop. Gotta make my decision tomorrow because a cold front is coming tomorrow and Monday at 5am will be ball shrinkingly cold at 75 mph

Bought some Sedici rain/winter gear today. 300 bucks for the pants and jacket. I was looking for tourmaster but no one had my size pants and it would have been about 100 bucks more for the seat.

It came with removable insulation so I can use it in summer as rain gear. It has armor on knees, elbows and shoulder. And it has a neck curtain. I'm totally covered now

Lulz. I give them the MC wave which I think they realize is in jest. I'm the asshole that goes around blipping the throttle in parking lots to set off car alarms. Hell, I can set them off when I'm just driving by a parking lot on the road.

My favorite is when I am idling past a car and I hear the alarm give the warning sound and then shut off. I'll pull the clutch in and pull hard on the throttle and make that fucker go off.

Last week in the parking lot for my friends apartment I kept going in circles because an alarm went off when I rode past. I heard a guy come out and yell what the fuck and turn it off. So I turned around and set it off again. I did this like 6 times. I am THAT kind of Harley rider.

ugh, a transverse twin with russian build "quality". ural's are the ultimate hipster bike, even moreso because the pnw is the best place to source them in the states. (well, until the gearbox splits and heaves oil all over your bruno maglis at 4k miles.) get a sidecar with a goggle-wearing retriever for max wes anderson twee, brehs.

get a guzzi; or, if you REALLY want to bring the effete worldly superiority, a good overpriced mv agusta brutale (for the oily southern lothario, and the dragster edition if you wanna fuck ibiza sluts thrice nightly) or stradale (for the sneering northern traveler).

In terms of features and price I liked that bike, but the styling is so :holeup.

Also its gauges. :goty2

I don't want something that belongs next to a Countach and I don't give a fucking shit about what Steve McQueen rode X years ago--I just want a god damn bike to ride around town that isn't a waste of my money (e.g. a retro pandering design) or a waste of the bike's capabilities.

Maybe I'll just grab one of the UJM heirs. :snoop

Was thinking about possibly purchasing a scooter.  Three wheels since I'm a wussy after having had an accident on a two wheeled 50cc scooter some years ago.  Would just be using it to drive to the train station and back.   Are any of these things allowed on highways, or does it depend on the state?  I see they have trike motorcycles too.

piaggio 3-wheelers might as well be two-wheeled since they lean. just take the msf training course for scooters and get a 150cc ride. you will thank me laterz.

Dunno if this would work since I'd be pretty much fucked during bad storms and those few times when there's bad ice and snow here in the winter.   :-\

What about getting a sidecar?  Wouldn't that stop leaning?  Could be a form of storage space too.

Go for the Polaris Slingshot or Can Am Spyder. My next "car" is going to be a slingshot... After I buy my next motorcycle.

Both of those look awesome, but for the price I could just buy a car-- some of those configurations cost more than my Fit did!  I would just want something cheap to go back and forth to the station with.  Maybe I should just think about a Smart Car.

Traded in my Road King.  They made me a hell of a deal I couldn't pass up and the miles I put on these bikes I figured it was a smart move to get into something with a warranty.  I went full Geezer Glide with a Road Glide Special...

in case you are questioning the state of my midlife crisis, let me note that i have added:

a 117ci stage iii BIG BORE(tm) kit, for obvious reasons. additionally, it included the HEAVY BREATHER(tm) air intake and the STREET CANNON(tm) pipes.

basically, i have fully embraced the homoerotic studded leather lifestyle that defines the last vestige of masculine america. plus dat contoured CORNFED CRUISER(tm) seat and dem GRIP N' RIP(tm) BUCKHORN(tm) bars make sure i keep my roadflower from getting mulched <3

:tauntaun :tauntaun

harley-davidson is what the bore once promised us all -- tom of finland dreams with uncle sam values. now, the rest of you have a plurality of benjis jerking each other off in the interwebs equivalent of an i-90 rest stop. me, though, i found the bore again, with its big boy displacement and heavy short stroke pounding away as i roll on by.

Took you long enough old man.  The Heritage is a great bike.  Not because it's particularly well engineered, not because it's powerful, not because it's fast - IT'S NONE OF THOSE THINGS!  But it is pretty fucking comfy, has a great sound and looks beautiful.

PS.  Get some white walls... The cool thing about them is that they turn into brown walls in half a day.  MULTI COLOR WHEELS!

Who did the kit on the engine?  The Harley cams and tunes are garbage so I hope it's not screaming eagle shit.

P.S.  People like to put their kids on Harleys they see in a parking lot.  People like to sit on your Harley in a parking lot.  People like to go turn on your accessories for some reason.  I got into it with a guy in the parking lot of a restaurant when I came out and he had his kid on my bike and he didn't understand why it was rude or unacceptable.

it's screaming eagle shit. it's all that's available for 114s right now (they still don't have the full stage iv kits). i'm adding a better tuner (the street tuner pro is garbage) and v&h pipes when they're available. fuelmoto has a full tune kit coming next month, supposedly. :-( fuck my warranty!

also, it's plenty fast even now with 115 hp and 126 ft/lbs of torque. ;-) it pulls hard throughout the whole rev range before the rev and speed limiters shut my ass down (fuckin' epa am i rite). a better tune/pipes will get me around 120 hp and 133 ft lbs of torque, which is just. about. perfect.

the new 2018 heritage has a completely redesigned suspension which is frankly genius. 4.4" of travel (yes, yes, lol) as opposed to 2.8", and a lean angle of 32 degrees -- and it soaks up bumps, plus holds a line through even gnarly switchbacks at speed like a razor. i hounded a friend on his r1 and he was all FUCK OFF OLD MAN. it's a sleeper -- looks like a '65 knuck; handles like a (fat-ass) yamerha.

i have yet to find white walls that aren't shitty bias-ply. i hate the vague feeling they give in corners, and they usually don't deal with the wet well. :-( i had them on the eldorado and they made my wife's beef flaps tickle -- she's disappointed with the blackwalls on the new ride but i suspect that's less because of the absent classic look and more because the chance of her getting a life insurance payout dropped by 1% or so
Title: Re: Heaven for Leather: Bore Biker Daddies Only

mmmm  that 114 sounds like a beauty.  I haven't done any research on it but I assume it's based on the new Milwaukee 8 design and so far the aftermarket support sucks.  I want some Rinehart true duals for my road glide but they don't have them yet.  And yes the new softail suspension is a fucking godsend.  That new front fork designs also make slow speed maneuvering a fucking breeze compared to previous models.  The new overhauls they're doing is what got me to trade in my 2014 Road King for the Road Glide.

I assume those numbers are at the wheel?  The engine torque would be much higher I imagine.  I've not heard too many horror stories about Harley telling people to fuck off due to aftermarket exhaust, intake or tunes.  They only get snippy on internals like cams/lifters, etc.

I'm happy if you're happy.  We have different riding styles.  I'm slow and easy like mac that's cheesy  :D

I honestly never had any issues with Dunlop whitewalls in wet weather but just like the stock dunlops they wore like shit.  My wife loved them too on my Road King but I got tired of literally cleaning them every day after each commute.  I ditched them on the next tire change.

All kidding aside I really like the direction Harley is going in.  They're working on catching up technologically while keeping the classic cruiser look.  I can dig that.  All 3 of my bikes have been rock solid anyhow even with my Road King getting 60k miles in less than 2 years.  I'll probably be trading my Road Glide in 2 years from now anyways because fuck it but yeah.  I think you'll be happy.  Plenty of displacement to play with if you're into turning her into a beast.
