Title: Baby's First PC
Post by: Huff on July 13, 2013, 07:20:04 PM: So despite my time to play games decreasing and my expected future expenses increase, my dumbass got drunk last night and started the process to finally building a PC. So it seemed appropriate to get drunk again and try to finish deciding what to put in my puter

Currently ordered:
i5 3570k
MSI Z77 MPOWER Mobo
which came with Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB ram
Seasonic M12II-650 power supply

Will be ordering soon. eventually. or one day
GTX 660 vs 670 vs HD 7950?
a case
some SSD - not sure how much
a regular hard drive -

do i need a hear sink or other cooling apparatus?
maybe a dvd/blu ray slot
sound card?
Fleshlight vs venus 2000?

Both of the next gen consoles will be using AMD gpus, so games will be optimized for that going forward. Probably won't make a huge difference, but it will be there.

Still have a PS4 preorder, because I hate money, so that should hopefully cover any next gen game that doesn't run well on an nvidia card

CPU looks good if you need video encoding or CPU intensive games. Stock cooler isn't going to let you OC much, get a third party air cooler at least if you're getting a K series CPU.

You can get a mobo with just as good performance for $50 or so cheaper if you don't need the extra bells and whistles of the $200 models. Look around more.

Power supply it's better to go with same or lower watts with higher efficiency. This one looks better - same brand, price and watts as M12II-650 with 80 plus gold.

GPU - I don't think any build should skimp on GPU. The 660 Ti or 670 both look good. 770 is even better but about $400, not a great price/performance.

If you want to save on SSD/HD costs try getting a hybrid drive.

Sound card - not necessary unless you're an audiophile or need an integrated amp.

for ssd size, 128 is probably fine considering 256 is can be ~$100 extra. Windows 7 and a bunch of problems take up around 60 gigs on my computer; everything else is on the secondary hdd. But some people like to move games between the hdd and ssd for faster loads or w/e and larger sizes might be worthwhile there.

dvd/blu ray...maybe. dvd drives are cheap and even tiny cases have room. I don't think you really 'need' them anymore.

case depends on your preference and range. I have a fractal design define R4. It's a plain black box, super quiet, has dust filters, has tons of room for cable management ( :heart). Downsides: it's wider than other cases I've had and there's a bright blue LED at the top that I cover up with some electric tape. All in all it's great. Again, some people like windows, strobe lights, tiger bites, typical gamer stuff.

yeah, building a PC is really very simple these days.

It's a lot of "put A in B" where nothing else fits in B, and A won't fit in B when it's the wrong direction.

Only if you're overclocking, otherwise stock is fine

Asus Xonar DG is cheap and very useful if you use headphones. Nice to have but not necessary.

If you can spring for a nice case (:bow Fractal Design Define R4 :bow2 ) it's worth it. But put the money in your main parts first

Apply too much pressure and you get bent pins or a bent board, mess up on thermal paste and your CPU might overheat, etc.

It's pretty simple but I do recommend looking at Youtube videos. I tried to move too quickly and wound up getting frustrated. It all worked out in the end though but if you're a little patient, it's pretty easy.

How did you go connecting the front fan switch? It confused the hell out of me for about 20minutes.

Quietest and best designed case I've ever owned, and it's sensibly priced. I have the non windowed version.
