The friends from school thing is what made me hate it from day 1 (or whenever I became aware of it).

I've only added two family members. First was a southern cousin, since I never see her. And I added one of my brothers since he's out of the country.

When family members ask if I have a Facebook I say I do but rarely use it, which isn't a lie. I need a better alibi because they tend to take that as meaning I don't know how to use Facebook, thus resulting in very bad explanations of how the site works.

Since my family is very strict and religious and I'm kind of the black sheep, I say that I do have an account but that there's another with a fake name that I also use (read: for heathen purposes). I switched the profile picture on my account that actually has my real name/phone number to a picture of an empty lecture hall so people just assume that it really is a dummy account. So far I've gone about 6 months without some relative or religious family friend sending me a request.

You can't do that on LinkedIn though no matter how much of a crazy person you are unfortunately.

I did that last night.

One worry though, I've got lots of family on my fb. Mainly aunts, uncles, and cousins on top of g-ma. I made an update last night with all of these people blocked from a post aside from cousins. Two of the cousins commented on the status, agreed, and thought it was fucking hilarious. Can the people on the custom blocked list still see the status on their feed since they're friends with the people that commented on the status? I asked a friend this on fb last night and she's...a bit...slow so I have no answer.

A couple of years ago, my cousin made a post about copying a CD or downloading a song; something along those lines.  My mother reads this and posts "NO DON'T DO THAT IT'S ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

My cousin promptly deleted my mother, who was shocked by this action.   :lol

I have some older family members added, but they never post, and since I barely post as it is, it doesn't really bother me.  I'm pretty satisfied with message boards, where you can post whatever and act like a tool, and generally not have to worry about this causing any problems in real life.

For the most part, I find FB pretty fucking boring and annoying -I hate getting messaged by people I don't want to talk to, but turning off chat solves that- but it is nice to be able to keep up with people who don't live near or haven't seen in a long time, I guess.  Plus not everybody cares about dicking around on boards.

It would be weird if I got one from my grandma since she's dead.

I keep saying I'll clean up my facebook and accept my family's friend request but I never get around to do it.

I once made the mistake of accepting a friend request of one of my parents' friends, and within seconds he posted on my wall "hey, I see you don't have a religion listed. What's up?"

I was absolutely against family on FB for a long time. Finally started accepting the requests. Turns out my family's crazy, hilarious and the most accepting group of people on the planet. We use it to keep up with family more than most friends now.
