Beginning of the end for this band, when they went from being an actual awesome metal band to the sad caricature they are today.

:piss Black Album :piss2

Fuck off

:dead

The thing is this argument comes up all the time, and I can't even be bothered to listen to anything from The Black Album to support any claim I might make. No one cares anymore.

The thing about black album (Metallica :teehee) is that many of the songs are so famous that I was familiar with all the songs before i ever listened to it, so I was totally fine with it because I liked those songs.
-
It's hard to deny it's a good album, even if you prefer the previous four (which I certainly do). Lots of great riffs, great solos, and it actually has some bass unlike the previous album.

For Whom The Bell Tolls is probably my favorite Metallica track, but you will NEVER convince me that Sad But True isn't still god tier.
-
Also those cheesy METAL album covers before the black album :lawd
-
The Black album was the transition from Heavy Metal(:rock) to commercial metal( :gurl). Before TBA, you wouldn't see or hear of Metallica outside of Headbangers Ball. TBA was made to be radio friendly.
-
Nothing else matters :heh :paul
-
Yeah, I think this is the first time I agree with Creepy Old Guy on anything. The Black Album is weak compared to their earlier works, especially Ride the Lightning.
-
Ride the Lightning is deffo best Metallica album.
-
Naw, that's Master of Puppets.
-
Master OF Puppets may be one of the heaviest of all time. Leper Messiah and The Thing that should not be? :lawd
-
A problem I hate with earlier Metallica is that a lot of the songs are aimless. Like I'm listening to the song Justice For All now and I just want to go to sleep. I prefer melodic Metallica (From Whom The Bell Tolls, Fade To Black, Trapped Under Ice) rather than the let's just play a bunch of random guitar riffs Metallica. Then again, that's a big problem I have with metal in general, lack of song structure in many bands' music. If I want to listen to lack of structure I stick to jazz. So in that way, I welcome commercial metal. I see nothing wrong with commercial metal at all. It sounds good.
-
Modern Metallica is what happens when people stop drinking.
-
One :rock
-
No.
-
AJFA has the best songs. It's one of the very few albums where I'd really love a remaster, though.
Dyer's Eve :rock :rock :rock Harvester of Sorrow :rock :rock :rock The Shortest Straw :rock :rock :rock
-
the black album is what happens when thrash has a mortgage to pay.
also, this thread should be flagged as having death magnetic content for anyone whose speakers have a short warranty.
-
Judas Kiss sounds like classic Metallica. It's the only Metallica track that has legitimately blown me away in...decades

what?

To Live is to Die is pretty fucking amazing in the middle section.
Orion > Call of Ktulu > To Live is to Die > Suicide & Redemption > most bands' best instrumental.
Exactly.

Huh. That's exactly the reason why I didn't enjoy Death Magnetic, it tried to emulate old Metallica without the sense for song structures that work even though they're complicated. Old Metallica were Gods in that regard. Even though AJFA is pushing it, it's the only song on the first 5 albums where I could maybe see where you're coming from.

And Justice For All > Ride the Lightning > Kill em All > Master of Puppets > S&M > Death Magnetic > Black Album

James Hetfield needs to ditch Metallica. He's shown that he's still capable of great riffs and songwriting. I can't help but feel like Lars is weighing him down. A quick google of Hetfield's music taste recently shows that he loves some really great metal. Then again, thrash and all that is a young man's game.
If there's anyone who needs to do a one shot/album collab with Dave Grohl, it's James Hetfield.
-
Megadeth > Anthrax > Pantera > Metallica
-
Slayer is thrash for 12 year olds.
-
Judas Priest > all of them
-
Metallica>Megadeth>Pantera>Slayer>>>>>>Anthrax
although I don't think any of those bands have released a better album this decade than Anthrax's We've Come for You All from 2003.

1 - that was last decade
2 - Worship Music is the best Anthrax album in like well over 20 years and better than anything Metallica has put out since the 80's
3 - Megath's album Endgame is the best thrash album from the big four since the 80's

bout to throw some real talk tho
Iced Earth > *

While all these dinosaurs were dragging their feet in the 90's Schaffer and crew were redefining a genre.

I definitely like Megadeth and Judas Priest more than Metallica.

Can't for the life of me figure out why people like Megadeth.
Pantera=Metallica>Slayer>Judas Priest>the rest>Megadeth
-
I like Iced Earth but come the fuck on Fistful. I'd understand an argument for Anthrax or Exodus, even Vio-lence. But fucking Iced Earth :lol
They took Thrash, modernized it, fused it with Power, and dominated the 90's with several perfect albums.
They floundered in the aughts but have come back from the dead refueled and ready to fuck.

also, ten/vs>facelift/dirt.
-
Megadeth is amazing. Choosing between them or Metallica is difficult and very understandable. Rust in Peace is best album of all time status easily.
I like Rust in Peace more than any Metallica album. Though I put Ride the Lightning slightly below it.
-

Listening to Dave Mustaine is like watching videos of guys jerking off. Just not my cup of tea.
-
Power Metal is pretty gay, it's just cheesy NWOBHM with more singing about dragons and keyboardz.
:yeshrug
That's the genius of Iced Earth tho. You take the majesty of an amazing vocalist with tons of range and throw him into a thrash band with a rhythm guitarist with riffs for ages and you got yourself a winning combo.
-
Fade to Black is my fave metal song tho :obama
-
I've never listened to Sepultura. I'll start with their debut lp

I have a weak spot for Blind Guardian. They sing about Lord of the Rings and stuff. Total cheese, but it doesn't bother me. You need to have a sense of humor for metal as a whole.

You're not ready for that shit :sabu
Listen to BtR
They're largely responsible for metal being popular in south america along with the big 4, truly a great band.
I can vouch for this.
Man I have so many fond (and painful mosh pits :bow2) memories of black/death metal concerts during my teen years and of course punk shows in rich kid's backyards :rock

power metal vocals
-
Annihilator is another underrated classic thrash band.
-
If you don't like Dehumanizer you don't know shit.
-
I'd still point to him as a power metal vocalist, especially considering he's the blueprint for it still (alongside Paul Dickinson obviously). You could argue Freddy Mercury was a power vocalist.
Power vocals require a certain level of skill and tone. The problem is that a lot of less talented singers basically overly exaggerate their vocals to attempt to replicate that sound, and fail.
-
I meant Bruce. But I'm such a fan that I call him by his middle name :smug
-
Most people are surprised when I tell them I used to be into metal when I was a kid (80's Megadeth and Metallica and stuff)... haven't really kept up with the stuff though.

I fucking love this way more than the thrash posted in this thread. Theoretically I love metal, but a lot of the most popular tends to be thrash, and there are very few times I 'get' thrash.

modern life is war are one of those transcendental holy shit bands, most important hardcore band since blag flag. they split five years ago and left a hole in the scene which nobody could fill; so they got back together and it's like they never dropped a beat.
