:lol
could be really cool. gonna be funny seeing all the fangirls get upset about this
-
lol was just about to post that exact video.
:bow Capaldi :bow2 this is gonna be amazing!
-
gonna miss smith a lot though
-
:rofl
He was amazing in In the Loop. Don't know if any of that will transfer to his Doctor, guess we'll see.
-
this is pretty great
-
Did anybody see the character he played in World War Z? Kind of funny.
-
I actually felt that the 11th Doctor was a little bit too ornery at first. Can't wait to see what they have planned.
-
Lair of the White Worm was an okay movie.
-
Probably an unpopular opinion but I never really liked Smith all that much and I'm glad to see him gone, especially replaced by MALCOLM FUCKING TUCKER. I can't wait.
-
Apparently Capaldi used to be in a punk band with Craig Ferguson called "The Bastards From Hell," so he's got that going for him.
-
Can't wait.
-
Looks like I'm going to watch Doctor Who again. I stopped with David Tennant.
Same.
Watched all of 9's episodes, stopped somewhere at 10's, never saw 11's episodes, but 12 makes me want to pick up where I left off.
-
:lol
Oh man wtf
-
"Get in the fuckin' Tardis you big quim!"
-

I wasn't much of a fan either.

I also stopped during Tenant's run- pretty much after Rose left. Rose <3 !
I liked Tenant just fine, and from the couple of Matt Smith episodes I've seen he seems just fine as well. I just don't really have time for TV in my life- I tend to prefer active entertainment these days as opposed to passive stuff like watching shows/movies.

You just reminded me I always wanted Ferguson to be the Doctor. :(
-
Matt Smith sucked. This is great news.

:lol

I keep misreading this thread as Michelle Tucker
:whew
brb gonna go fap as you discuss third tier sci fi
-
Smith came across well in the first season or so because of the supporting cast and better writing compared to the awful, awful last season of Tennant's run. But this past season of Doctor Who was pretty boring, and while Tennant made his slumming it final episodes somewhat entertaining by being so darn charming, Smith couldn't do anything for his.
Is the companion getting switched up along with Smith? Clara and the teaser for the 50th anniversary were the best part of the last season.
-

boooo
Smith has been mostly great, with his peaks definitely at the end of his first series. Series 6 and 7 were mostly hit or miss mostly because Moffat has become a pretty bad writer when it comes to plot arcs. But Smith really shines on one offs, and especially when he has to convey his age and ultimately his anger. He plays a much better dark/angry Doctor than Tennant ever could.
Really though, I'd recommend those of you in this thread who haven't watched any of 11 to pick up straight from his first episode, The Eleventh Hour. The series is nigh fucking perfect other than a stretch of episodes 6-9. Vincent and the Doctor is one of the best and most heartwarming episodes of modern TV.
It's this last series that has made people lukewarm to Smith, but I attribute that to pretty piss poor writing. He's still a wonderful Doctor, and I like him more than Tennant by far.

Clara is staying with Capaldi as the 12th.
Also, you pretty much summed up what I was trying to say. Smith's last moments (at least so far) have been no where near as entertaining as Tennants...but I'm sure the 50th will fix that.
-
Lol at that video - SKINNY UGLY! Good lord... like.... pretty much every doctor who recently? Smith looks like a brother and sister produced plastic baby thing.
But huzzah - i've not watched Dr Who since Christopher Eccleston but this could well be amazing.
I mean - Capaldi has some top swears and insults but he can really really act and if the new Dr is based around the fact that he's genuinely capable of being fucking terrifying then this could be quite something.
-
getting excited for it, then.
people were calling for Tucker way back when Tennant was leaving. Johnson from Peep Show was the other choice choice.
-
just an FYI, the actor's name is actually Peter Capaldi – not malcolm tucker. that was the character capaldi played in the thick of it
-
Uh DC, the 9th-11th doctors were pretty good looking, by white guy standards at least. I wonder how Capaldi will look all hairsprayed.
-

Capaldi was the one who told him to try comedy :bow2 every Ferguson fan should read his book "American on purpose"
-
I love that Capaldi wrote a letter to the BBC in 1988 when he was 15 years old about the forthcoming 25th Anniversary of Doctor Who.
-
Whaaa? no way he was 15 in 1988!
-

Must have had a TARDIS all along considering he was 30 in 1988.
-
Explanation: (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/doctor-who/10221940/Peter-Capaldi-named-as-the-new-Doctor-Who.html)
He urged the show's producers to make another "Special" in 15 years time to celebrate 25 years of "wandering in time with the Doctor".
When he was 15, he asked them to make another Doctor Who special in 15 years. Kinda of a weird request, but you know, we've all written things we weren't proud of at 15.
-
I approve. :bow It was about time they brought someone older.
Now here's hoping they restrain the character's forced quirkiness in favor of some believable sternness to balance him out, stop chasing after the hipster demographic (fashion/casting), stop positioning the doctor as this god-like figure and the center of the universe (shouldn't he be the curious traveler?), and increase the self-contained episodes and/or shorter arcs. I'd like to see more sense of adventure and wonder over shallow drama and sentimental value. Basically I'd like to see the show go back to being appealing to a wide audience than focusing on on a very specific one.
Now, a simple change of the Doctor won't necessarily bring all these changes if any, but a clean slate is a good starting point.
-
I was just getting used to Smith. Even though he has had a longer run at it than Tennant, it seems like it was very shortly lived.
The thing I liked about him was that he brought back some of the old-school personality of the Doctor. Just being goofy with a hint of seriousness all while trying to save the galaxy.
I can't wait to see what Capaldi brings to the table though.
-
I couldn't stand Smith.
-
A lot of people felt that way. I can't say that I particularly blame them, although I do think a lot of the problem was with the writers. Amy Pond's storyline went on way too long and I think they've had a hard time coming back from that.
-
The best part of the Smith run is that increased production budget: a new logo, really nice vignettes, much better direction and cameras techniques that feel more cinematic. In prior seasons, Doctor Who, from the reboot on felt very...cheap. Compare the first episode with Smith to any prior season and it's night and day in terms of production, cinematography, lighting, set design;etc. It doesn't feel so cheap anymore. Too bad it's got Smith in it.
-
I can't abide the Smith hate. He was amazing, especially in s5. s6 and 7 were pretty weak though, but Smith was always the bright spot.
Doctor Whipsters like Wrath and Himu, get bent.
-
um.
okay?
-
It doesn't help that Amy Pond is probably one of the worst companions ever.
And unlike most people I think the companion makes the Doctor.

I'd probably give up a year of my life just to see the schadenfreude a black Dr. Who announcement would generate.

Would there really be schadenfreude? Seems like most fans want it to happen.

This is Doctor Who. Its fans would cheer.
You fucking baka.

Yeah the Clara storyline has been a bore
Amy/River storyline was a bit out there, but I enjoyed it. Probably should have ended with the final reveal and then moved on. The show misses Rory a lot.
I want a return to the menacing Doctor that Eccleston had.
-
Said it before but Ferguson would have been my first pick. <3

Maybe Craig can make a guest appearance as an asshole boss.
-
Craig should be his companion.
-
I want an older male companion to go along with an older male doctor.

please go all in and make it a black -american- Dr Who for the utter carnage of it all.
Hell - Mos Def would probably make a good Dr.
-
I'm loving this choice. What accent does he have, Charlie?

Matt Smith's interview :lol

Capaldi has a soft Glasgow accent as opposed to the almost-my-original-accent-horrors of this :
