Anyone here believe in the theory of dysgenics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dysgenics), i.e. that dumb people have more kids making the whole population dumber resulting in this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icmRCixQrx8
I got thinking about this looking at the 100 most popular names in New Zealand in each of the last ten years. Among them were Jaxon, Nevaeh and Shakira (I know this an Arabic name, but it made the top 100 in one year, 2002, so go figure).
Are we fucked?
Also for added fun, if you have kids list their name/s so we can judge you and your choices.
-
Glen Shinobi what are your thoughts on this?

Nope. Flynn effect. QED.

Nope. Flynn effect. QED.
Is it possible that we have peaked/will peak? Probably not globally for a very long time, but in countries that are already highly developed.

:snoop
I'm not saying I believe in it but it's an interesting theory.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fertility_and_intelligence
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nations_and_intelligence
Also comparing the national fertility rates and average IQ of nations makes it appear that broadly, as people become more intelligent they have less children (although there are obviously quite a few alternative explanations for this), which is supported by the Flynn effect when IQ is contrasted with fertility rates in highly developed nations.
-
So, you're concerned that people naming their children with non-traditional names, instead of naming them after biblical figures (in the hopes of earning God's favor) is a sign of less intelligence?
-

That's obviously distinguished mentally-challenged too. But Nevaeh...? C'mon folks.
-
I see nothing wrong with Nevaeh?
Wikipedia says: The name Nevaeh is the word "Heaven" spelled backwards. Many erroneous origins for this name are cited elsewhere, including that Nevaeh comes from the Spanish term nevar which means to snow. According to an ancient alchemist/hermetic text The Triangle Book by Count of St. Germain states, "Nevaeh is the secret word to enter paradise." [1]
Your entire argument stems from the idea that people who aren't following the status quo are less intelligent. Usually the status quo isn't exactly the most intelligent means.
For reference, Count St. Germain is from the 1700's. So this word has a 300 year old history.
And it means people are less intelligent because...you don't like it, but can't be assed to do a 5 second google search? You're making quite a case for yourself!

lol why did you remove the last bit?

Why do people respond to Polari?

lol why did you remove the last bit?
It was a seperate thought I was going to post later.
Personally, I view humanity as a pyramid. Only a certain small percentage will be gifted with intelligence (and apply it to improve all of our lives). The more there are of us, the more of these gifted people there will be.
You could easily make the argument that there are more stupid, backwards, dangerous people living on the planet now than there ever has been. Yet things have never been better (for humanity as a whole).

There is no argument. Trashy names are what got me thinking about it and finding the dysgenics thing.

Wikipedia also said it became popular after the singer of Christian nu-metal band POD named his daughter it though.
There was a girl in my English class when I was 15 telling me how she was going to go with her youth group to a POD concert. She was a year behind.
-
How do the circumstances make them stupid or less intelligent? Are you saying they're less intelligent because they follow POD news - hence, are uncultured because "why the fuck would anyone listen to THAT band?" - or are they less intelligent because they named their kid a name a famous person named their own child?
Either way, nothing about it screams less intelligent. The name is a good name. Maybe people liked it? It's a helluva lot better than Moonbeam or Wave or Arian, so I'm not seeing the big deal?
Let's think on this. What is your name? How do you think you got it? Likely, it was originally the name of a Biblical character and it spread from there. Are the people who started naming their children after Biblical characters any less or more stupid than people naming their child after someone in a band they like's kid? I don't think so. Maybe it's not Biblical. Then likely, it was either a noble or commoner name in English. Let's go with a noble name since the POD guy is famous. Is there any major difference at all because commoner people in the 1200's taking a name from a noble because they like it than what people are doing with the name Nevaeh?
No.

Mmmmm debatable I'd say

:lol
This was funny as hell for some reason
-
Also, I hate the idea that intelligent people aren't flawed, like they don't make mistakes and transcend humanity. The entire idea is bollocks. Fuck I love that word, bollocks. Let it roll off your tongue - Bolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll ocks. Fucking awesome.
-
I think you're more interested in letting bollocks roll onto your tongue.

BOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOCKS
:mouf

Nah my name isn't a biblical name. I was named for my great-grandfather, I don't know how he got it. It's a pretty traditional name though.
-
Mmmmm debatable I'd say
Every era is 'the best of times and the worst of times'. So, it's not too hard to find specific examples in this world of people that are struggling and are worse off than some time before.
But broadly speaking, humanity is healthier, better educated, less violent, less prone to wars, more enabled to speak their minds and more environmentally aware than any time in recent history.

Well see, now you've defined a lot criteria and it became less debatable :lol Throwing "recent history" in definitely took out the considerations I was having. The exception I was considering was primitive man with low populations. I did some reading recently about how warring probably wasn't an issue except where resources were limited and populations were high. (it was a study trying to gleam if war is natural to man by examining aboriginal populations) Health and education, of course we're superior now. Environmentally, of course we are in discord compared early man. And there's some interesting thought to be had about the value of conscious thought. It has been argued before that we truly are hindered by language and self awareness. But, yeah, sure, when defined by the criteria you laid out I guess modern times would have to be considered "best"

Maybe people have just been adapting to an evolutionary environment containing IQ tests by becoming better at gaming IQ tests? :smug
-
BTW I'm a lot more miserable than I was last week, on account of this goddamn headache is killing me - stops your "humanity is getting better" theory dead
-
Glen Shinobi with his 160 iq isn't having kids anytime soon so maybe there's something to this :sabu
-
I'm not saying it's all bad. :heh
-
now I feel better-ish - maybe there is hope for humanity after all

In German orthography, nouns, proper nouns and if you want to be pedantic (i.e. German) words that are used like nouns are capitalized as well.

Kids just seem like a bummer. I can't understand wanting them right away if you have other options or shit to do with your life.

I think some of the people who have kids young do so because they don't feel as if they have many options in life, which is pretty sad.

Or they are content where they are or where their life is going and are ready to take the next step and do what their parents did. It's not all bad all the time.
Also, the earlier you start the sooner they're going to be out of the house.

I don't know I've just run into so many people who haven't even been an adult that long and they think kids need to come right now. How can you have a child before you even know yourself?

Hey we all come from a long line of people who had kids :teehee

And most of us are shitty people.

If you have kids and your parents are taking care of your kids more often than you are or you're out clubbing. Then, seriously, you should have got that shit out of your system before you popped some kids out.

I don't know, I think it's important to expose children to disappointment in authority figures at an early age.
-
Well it's not like your social life needs to die if you have children either though.
-

Part of me agrees, but the rest doesn't even really know what that means. Mentally you'll never be prepared either way, unless you've helped raise your nieces and nephews or somethning. As long as your financials and relationship are in order you might as well go for it.
-
Well it's not like your social life needs to die if you have children either though.
Well it's one thing to go out sometimes but I'm talking like neglecting the kids you totally had to bring into this world.
-
Well it's not like your social life needs to die if you have children either though.
Nah but it will die when they are newborns, simply because you will be too tired to do any other bullshit. Our son is only two and a half and he spends time with the grandparents now so we can do 'big people stuff'*
*god I can't believe I said that :(
-
Totally. We hardly ever make it out, and when we do it's because the little man is with his dad. I just think its weird when people have kids and then they never emerge from their homes again.
-
Does "big people stuff" mean fucking? I'm confused.

There's probably some quack theory about better readability out there, but I don't know why we do it that way. Tradition, I suppose.
-

Yeah I figured. So I guess it's like partying right? But if you're calling it big people stuff :dead

:'( :'( :'( :'( It's what happens when you have children. I can't help it.
-
Yeah, dating after kids can be difficult.
-
Having only two people raise children seems dumb anyway, considering how useless and vulnerable infants are. Giant families or entire villages where everybody shoulders a tiny bit of responsibility, that's where it's at. Kumbaya, etc.
-
The monkeys that fuck all the god damn time. Something like that.
-
Having kids when you are young is better because you still have energy to take care of them. If you are just starting to change diapers in your late 30's/early 40's then :ufup
All 3 of mine will be out of high school before I'm 50. :rejoice
I have an ever growing list of shit I want to do with the empty nest.
-
You can make fun all you want but Polari has a point
It's always the poor underclass with 5 kids, while the educated upper class has 2 tops.
-
Do you ever really know yourself tho :ohhh :yeshrug

Pro-tip: The type of person that is that neglectful and irresponsible to do that sort of thing routinely lacks character and more than likely won't change; they'd probably be shitty parents if they had kids later in life too.
Also true but some people do mature a bit for whatever reason. Some obviously don't. That's always unfortunate.
-

Mandark brought up the Flynn Effect, which is apparently about how average intelligence worldwide is always increasing.
But you also have to consider that in first-world and in developing nations, you're starting to have to learn more before you can get a desirable job. Gradually, things like the level of schooling you've completed and especially practical skills like math and literacy will universally rise as jobs that are mostly labor-intensive will start being automated.
I'm not including people who can't stand to ever work/use birth control and just don't give a damn about providing for their kids but that's probably a negligible minority. The movie Polari is talking about assumes they'll eventually outbreed everyone else.
-
Plus, haven't you seen Matilda? Sometimes two stupid people make a genius
