Title: metal >> thread of sharing spermatids with himu
Post by: Eschaton on August 22, 2013, 02:17:42 PM
Himu, your commentary on metal is sophomoric. You say that a lot of metal (specifically targeting more extreme stuff) is lacking in melody or direction. This is fucking ridiculous, because you're praising Punk in the same sentence, when Punk is the one of the primary sources of the dissonance, atonality, and chaotic arrangement of metal!

Before punk, metal sounded like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkysjcs5vFU

No melody?

From a musical perspective, there is plenty of melody to be found in even the harshest stuff out there:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLTUKNKwlkw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luFCBdS5PAs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvfoePd5mnk

In truth, the best of extreme metal is centered on slowly evolving a melody and/or motif, just like the best of ambient. You dismissed the acidy material of aphex twin and enjoyed the simpler, more accessible stuff, but the concept is pretty much the same. It's a romantic style of composition. I, and many other metal fans, find joy in that slow development of a melody or theme hidden inside tightly structured, atonal sounding riffs, no matter how they are arranged. Eye of the storm.

I just wanted to back Esch up on this.

There's a pretty good academic book called This Ain't The Summer of Love which looks at the intertwining nature of punk and metal and lays out the history of how each one asserted dominance over the other at various points in the 70s and 80s.

The problem with this is that we are using metal as a base and not arguing sub genres of metal. My problem isn't really metal as a whole, but certain sub genres. Of course a lot of metal has melody. The problem is that a lot of the metal I hear from friends or whatever doesn't have melody and are more in the way of that shit Fistful posted.

Honestly, punk was barely even the discussion in our talk.

If I have to choose one I'm going with punk. I'd argue it has been way more influential than metal has.

Punk lost.

The best shit got absorbed into metal in the form of grind, and look at everything since its emergence. lame shyt like sunny day real estate and modern screamo/hXc :trash :trash :trash

Punk had some interesting ideas and spirit, but never the same emphasis on boundary pushing as a form of music or aesthetic :heh

Read those pages again. You are the only person bringing up punk past the initial discussion. Everyone else is discussing the merits of metal.

Also, tell me what is exactly wrong with liking music that sounds nice? What sounds nice to me are things I like. I like a lot of things that wouldn't sound nice to others. So "sounding nice" is such  vapid, and especially elistist argument and way of saying "you don't get it". Well make me get it and post good music that's dissonant and chaotic? I can get that with punk, I rarely do with metal.

Sometimes you just want to listen to some aggressive dumb music with no melody and is just loud and abrasive and shit. Sometimes you want to listen to some soaring vocals against whaling guitars. Sometimes you want to listen to some slow driving rhythms.

Dude! You are reaching here. Respect it as an art form? What the fuck. Just because I don't I don't get it doesn't mean I don't respect it. And your attitude IS elitist. I only like music that "sounds good"? Do you think tweens like Brian Eno or Philip Glass? A lot of jazz is just as chaotic as some metal and punk but it jives with me because I like the sound. Do you realize the crux of your argument is that YOU think THAT type of music sounds good and yet argue that the only reason people cannot listen to that type of music is that it is "hard to digest" so we sink back to our holes to listen to what "sounds good"? And you don't think this is elitist, how exactly?

Heavy Metal is the only good genre of music. Reason because there are so many subgenres that incorporate so many different styles that literally anyone can find something to enjoy.

Everything else is garbage.

Country? Garbage
Rap? Garbage
Hip Hop? Garbage
Pop? Garbage

Jazz, rock, electronic. Boom.

Electronic easily has more sub genres than metal. Hell it could be argued heavy metal itself is a sub genre of rock.

Blues took wing from country, and blues is a main inspiration for rnb. Much like how rap is a splinter from electronic, rnb is a splinter from country. Saying metal only has sub genres is foolishness.

metal and punk are both giant umbrellas with no drawn boundaries and a lot of crossover. punk in particular is defined almost purely by who your band hangs out with. you could sound like willy nelson, judas priest or pearl jam and as long as you're on the right bills, people will consider you a punk band.

people who get super autistic about punk subgenre definitions probably spend too much time on the internet and not enough time at shows.

I just don't particularly care for their abrupt and awkward combination of some really basic death metal with that acoustic, singer songwritery type shit. I think Katatonia does what they do in a much better and comfortable way, and I think you might like them. I couldn't recall what to recommend to you, but their newer shit would probably suit you good, Viva Emptiness album maybe?

Really dig Sepultura btw. And I've heard of that band, good choice.

I still don't understand the weird ass animosity between Punk and Metal in the subsets of the internet. They're both my favorite genres within my all time favorite genre(Rock), they've both inspired one another, they've both have had their low points and high points in history, and they both have annoying fucking fans.

I don't understand how you can like metal and hate punk or vice versa.

that's the internet. it's actually probably cooler to wear a metal shirt at a punk show than a punk shirt. last punk/hc all dayer i was at, a good third of the bands were musically indistinguishable from metal bands (and i don't mean faggy nu-metalcore or whatever it is that involves straightened hair, recycled maiden riffs and synchronised axe gymnastics) and everyone's favourite guy was this viking looking dude double fisting beers in a pantera shirt.

i mean deathwish are generally where hardcore bands go to make it big, and check out their roster: http://www.deathwishinc.com/bands whole bunch of metal on there.

i'm talking the modern expanded punk scene though, if you mean crusties who haven't evolved their idea of punk since 1979, well, who gives a fuck about them?

that's what i meant by my internet snark earlier. if your music experience is coming purely from your own bedroom, there's a temptation there to start trying to super studious about it on a musical level to somehow elevate your connection to it. where the real connection should come from getting your tooth chipped on the mic in the middle of some gang vocal pile on.

probably why electronic music is the worst for those types.

punk losers are poor and work graveyard shifts to feed their illegitimate children or pay child support, while metal spergs live at home and spend all day categorizing EPs, never knowing the touch of a woman. These two groups are always going to battle.

that's what i meant by my internet snark earlier. if your music experience is coming purely from your own bedroom, there's a temptation there to start trying to super studious about it on a musical level to somehow elevate your connection to it. where the real connection should come from getting your tooth chipped on the mic in the middle of some gang vocal pile on.

probably why electronic music is the worst for those types.

I love electronic and I can't stand the "THIS ISN'T TRANCE IT'S HOUSE HOW DARE YOU."

Fuck off.

Bwahahaha

They only have 1 good album, The Red Album. Everything else they've done is completely terrible.

FFS, if you have your distortion set at 10.... it's probably metal. All these sub genre label are the works of a special fellow.

Love:

Neurosis - Burn
Cynic - I'm a Wave But To...
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Dio - Holy Diver
Diablo Swing Orchestra - Voodoo Mon Amour
Diablo Swing Orchestra - A Tap Dancer's Dilemma

Black Sabbath - Planet Caravan (holy shit I've never heard this, I've only heard their first album and wasn't too impressed but this song!!)
Maudlin of the Well - Bizarre Flowers/A Violin Mist

Amorphis - Intro :bow :rock :rock The build up :lawd
Heavy Metal - classic film, love the ost, love that oldschool melodic style from the 70's and 80's before thrash took off.

Like:

Burzum - Dunkelheit
Queensryche - I Don't Believe In Love
Swallow The Sun - Cathedral Walls
Slough Feg - Traveller
Gaytheist - :obama

Meh:

Morbid Angel - The Blessed Are The Sick
Dalriada - ahdfaldfasdfj  I like the premise, but don't like drums like that, need to hear more. I love how the song flows to the animation more to the band though.

Ew:

Suffocation - Breeding the Spawn
Enslaved - Path to Vanir
EVERYTHING BY MASTADON

As you can tell I have a thing for slower songs, melodic metal but the swing shit is :bow

I absolutely love early Ensiferum until Jari left the band and started Wintersun and took all the talent with him. His vocals are fantastic, he can sing clean and also deliver some of the most impressive harsh vocals around. A true musical craftsman.

the break around 4:24 is my favorite part of the song.
