Title: Nintendo's latest adventure in distinguished mentally-challenged hardware: The 2DS!
Post by: Cascade on August 28, 2013, 11:29:06 AM
If you needed any more proof that Miyamoto is senile, here it is:

Quote
Nintendo announced the 2DS today, a new entry-level handheld system. The 2DS will be available for $129.99 on October 12th (the same day as Pokemon X and Y) and features a slate-like design rather than the clamshell seen on DS and 3DS models.

The 2DS is fully compatible with all 3DS and DS games but does not include the ability to display games in 3D. It still features all the functionality of 3DS (WiFi, local multiplayer, etc.) and can be put to sleep using a slider that replicates closing the clamshell on a standard 3DS. WiFi can still be turned off, though it’s done via controls in the software rather than with a physical switch.

So this thing is aimed at 5 year olds and their parents (what Nintendo system isn't you say) and yet they're expected to understand that the games labelled 3DS on the box meant for the 3DS system will work on the 2DS system? There's that award winning Nintendo logic.

They're going to have to have it on the box that shows that it works for 2DS and 3DS.

Goddamn, Nintendo is spiraling out of control.  This must be Iwata's hail mary play.

From Kotaku:
"Like its 3DS brethren, the 2DS uses an internal rechargeable battery. Nintendo isn't commenting on battery life other than to say it should be in line with other company handhelds."

And it's 130$.

What happened to Nintendo's industrial designers? Did they all go to Apple after the DS Lite and Wii?

Also: I think this was the final rumor of 01net to come true. Well, Iwata in the ejection seat too.

How fucking cheap is this company? They can't even design a device that utilizes a new screen or controls. They are just leftover DS parts in a cheap, plastic case.

The biggest kicker is I do not know how this is easier for a 4-6 year old to handle versus the plain 3DS.

It's hilarious, if you bring up the fact that Nintendo is now a company that is trying to own the 5-8 year old crowd, so they one day grow up and buy consoles for their 5-8 year old, people on GAF freak the fuck out.

The whole thing is a single touchscreen. :lol

Curiously, the 2DS is even more of a tablet-style system than it appears at first glance, as it actually features a single large screen in its center, not two separate ones. As one of their cost-cutting design measures, Nintendo reduced the number of screens in the system from two to one, and the appearance of separate screens is merely simulated by the way the case masks out the extraneous portions. This means the entire screen is by necessity a touchscreen, with the upper screen protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it. While this makes no difference for the system's normal functions -- after all, neither the system's firmware or its software would recognize the hidden, inactive zones of the screen or the upper portion's touch capabilities, even if you exposed those portions -- I'm curious to see what hardware modders manage to do with the system.

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense.  Nintendo just wants something cheap for kids to play Pokemon X and Y on.  As tablets become more and more ubiquitous, Nintendo is going to really have to target the "value hardware" aspect hard, in light of their $40 games.  Nintendo is conceding the war against tablets and are now going to start fighting with Leap Frog.

So you're powering a really big screen where a huge number of its pixels are hidden behind plastic  :lol

yeah and, like, I know it's not the best MP3 player or web browser but it would be nice to see those pixels since ... they exist ...

Also that price is a joke. There's no way the components in that thing add up to more than $50.

Having even worse battery life is straight up hot garbage. That said I bet my niece gets one of these for Xmas or some shit, she's wanted a 3DS for a minute but her folks have been like 'eeeh it's kinda pricey'. There's probably a lot of families like that this will sell to.

I think it'll still sell a lot but definite a huge hit (like in the 30-40% range) as a result of the recent phone & tablet explosion

Isn't Super Mario Land 3D one of the few games people actually buy for the 3DS?  Granted there's not a lot of these, but there are some areas in the game that will require 3D to be turned on to do something.  Not sure how they're going to swing that unless Nintendo patches those areas.

Unfortunately NSMB2 handily outsold 3D Land so as far as Nintendo's concerned the casuals/kiddies still buying their games don't give a fuck about 3D (which I can sympathize with since I always play with it off, even in 3D Land most of the time.)

Jesus christ - Polygon and Wired falling over themselves :/ "This proves Nintendo know their market!"

err... let's just hold fire until the thing actually produces the sales! This is like when the 3DS price cut happend and the DS outsold it but "WHY would anyone buy the DS when the 3DS is cheaper!? TROLL!" etc
.
Also - whilst i'm probably not the greatest person to consult on purse strings and budgets for families - every single games journo outthere is suddenly an expert on what families with kids are going to buy. I do enjoy the idea that $130 + $40 for pokemon = $170 total - is the out-of-season sales THANG that's -absolutely guaranteed- to happen! Just like the WiiU is a guaranteed hit after the Wii and just like the 3DS is the guaranteed hit after the DS - i think people need to just wait until we see the scores on the board. I'm sure Pokemon will sell gangbusters - but the 2DS still needs to convert and the confusion is going to be rife.

Also - if your a screaming Nthing and you big shouty message is "THIS ISN'T FOR YOU!" then... fuck me. #facepalm

I don't agree with the premise that "every time" is a guarantee - but yes, it's definitely their best hope but the idea that they "know their market" is flawed in the last X years of flapping around - and of course it's counting the chickens before they've hatched -again-.

I'm sure there's some twitching anuses at Nintendo towers.

You'd certainly think with sales floundering in the west, Nintendo would be more likely to lower the price. Maybe it has something to do with the exchange rate or something.

I'd love to see the focus groups Nintendo runs. 2DS sounds like it's not as new as 3DS. If the plan was to move away from the wasted 3D gimmick, why not bring back the Gameboy sometime in the future?

It's like if Apple suddenly announced the iPad 2HD.

I'd grab one if it was the XL screens. I want to replace my normal 3DS with a XL at some point, just haven't gotten around to it yet

Hip hop at its mainstream peak, street racing, UFC, Texas Hold'em tournaments. That's all I can remember of the last decade.

Yeah, 90's hip hop is pretty much the peak of the genre IMO.  You have lots of different sounding stuff, whereas today everything pretty much sounds either overproduced or underproduced, and all of it by the same guy.

Sounds like you don't listen to hip hop. It's better today than it has been in a long time, and I'd argue there is more variety now than in the 90s. Not saying it's a better era than the 90s, but your post sounds like something that would be justified in 2002-2010.

I honestly haven't paid attention to hip hop since around 2009 or so, other than the crap I hear on the radio very occasionally.  But that's my point- in the 90's, you heard a lot of different stuff on the radio, and these days you hear the same ol shit.  I'm sure there's more indie/underground/lesser known shit out there, but as far as mainstream hip hop goes- it's a bunch of homogenized shit these days.

That's what I was thinking. I thought that when the 3DS launched it was off to a pretty bad start, but once the first price drop occurred, it started selling like hotcakes.

The reasoning behind the 2DS is solid- a less expensive hardware option to launch simultaneously with their biggest franchise.

But man... the execution is so awful.

I hate to come off like the PSP/Vita stans of yore (Bububu what about digital) but I really do wonder what effect full eShop releases are having on reported software sales. For some titles it's up to 30% being digital.

But I suppose what's really important is whether third parties think their software is selling, and I'm not sure I get that feeling. I can't remember the last awesome 3rd party 3DS exclusive announcement.
