I've been in the market for a reader. I find reading on my tablet can get distracting due to work emails and having a browser. So maybe of I get this I can go back to reading. I read that Amazon plans on offering a service for getting physical books we've purchased from Amazon on kindle.

So much better than a tablet for reading. Screen + lack of distraction. Yeah Amazon a probably going to do that, they just credited a bunch of CDs to my music account, not that I use that shit but cool nonetheless.

Launching in October.

I've honestly been kind of curious as to why publishers hadn't done this before like how music companies gave away mp3s w/ vinyl albums.
i'm really surprised that comic companies beat them to the punch by including digital copies of some comics in the sale price of physical books
-
I wonder if this version will allow to switch the light off. The only thing I really want from my kindle paperwhite (that, and support for other DRM but that obviously won't happen).
-
That Goodreads integration is mighty tempting. Is this eInk or LCD?

goodreads integration should be available on old paperwhite right?

Agreed. I love being able to take my Kindle to the beach and read in the sun all day. Can't do that shit with an iPad or whatever.
-
Goodreads and that vocab builder are the cool things. I want to be able to post like Drinky. Maybe I'll finally buy one (probably not).
-
buying one for kindle page flip assuming that isn't rolled out to first gen touches

achievements :snoop
I like audible's achievements and stat tracking :yeshrug

I preordered one. I have one of the superbasic Kindles (plus an official leather case I found on clearance at Staples for $5), gonna sell that and put it towards this. Now that they've dealt with the light issues (according to the previews I've read), seems like a good time to jump in.

Me too, mine arrived last Friday. Doesn't seem like a significant enough upgrade to make me slash my wrists

I'd imagine the 1st gen PW will get all of that software stuff, it'll just run slower
-
Damn, that looks nice. Probably going to buy this one.

So, my Paperwhite v.2 came in today. I never owned a v.1, but I saw enough of them to know they've pretty much fixed the "cloudy light" issue. Seems pretty fast in comparison to my old basic Kindle.
I have a pinhole light leak/dust mote or something on my screen, though :( It's really, really tiny, but I know me. I might as well retitle all my books to THERE'S THAT FUCKING SPOT, PART: AGAIN. I'll give it a shot for the evening, but if my eyes are gonna be drawn to it like I figure, it's going back (where, considering my luck with electronics, I will receive a replacement with a dozen light leaks).
Also, they are cheap fuckers when it comes to packing. You know what they ship Kindles in? The retail box. No other packaging. Just the regular old box like you would get at Best Buy or wherever, except with UPS stickers all over it. Mine looked like someone punted it onto the truck >:(
-
:what well that is ridiculous
-
Now I can't see the spot anymore, maybe it was dust and fell off. So that's good!
Page flip is really cool. Haven't tried any footnotes. Goodreads and some other features are coming later in a software update. It's still an ereader, so you're gonna see a little shadowing and text-ghosting here and there, but the lighting really is much better, and page turning is very fast for e-ink.
Still can't get over how shitty the shipping was. That's some ebay-level "don't give a fuck" right there :lol
-
why do you hate Amazon GreenBoxTM
sounds pretty great but I'm trying really hard to stay on an every-two-year device upgrade path

Same thing happened to me last time. Chat up Amazon support and they'll replace it. My new Paperwhite will be here tomorrow.
-
Yeah, noticed it again and contacted CS. They're writing it off as shipping damage and sending me another.
-
When I had mine replaced last year they didn't have the model I bought in stock so they upgraded it to the ad-free 3g model free of charge.
Amazon support :bow2
-
Got my new Kindle. It's as advertised. Sharper screen, faster page turns, better light.
-
They really upgraded the cloudy light? Damn, now I want a new one >:(
Can you switch off the light completly?

No. it's always on. The lowest setting is extremely dim and basically can't be seen at all in general daytime settings, but it is on.
-
As expected, my replacement has three pinhole light leak/dust motes. Also seems a bit cloudier along the bottom edge. My stellar luck with electronics continues!
-
Also, a teeny-tiny black dot on the bottom left corner, like a stuck piece of e-ink. Terrific!

Noel: I'm afraid we gonna have to replace that unit Kevin.
It will still be free of charged, don't worry.
I don't want you to be charged of keeping the first Kindle.
Me: I just didn't want to be a hassle, since this would be the third unit altogether.
Noel: I'm with you on that however it is about the replacement system, let's have it processed for you to get a good working unit this time.
You have named the 2nd unit as Kevin's Shitty Paperwhite, right?
Me: Haha, yeah, I was a little tweaked about all the spots
-
I'd buy one if it had an 'easy read' option, an algorithm to cherrypick on stuff you'd like, and then it could maybe be turned into pictures for the for the all of the simpletons.
-
I was trying to see if I could just keep the first one since I haven't dropped it in the mail yet, the replacement was worse, and I didn't want to roll the dice on getting an even worse one the third time around. So the dude tells me they can't do that as it's been marked for return. All right. Then he's wanting all kinds of credit card numbers and shit for collateral. Hold up, Chief, I says. How about you just give me a refund and I walk across the street to Best Buy and get one there? That way if there's a problem I can just walk back across and return it instead of mailing shit, which is what I should have done to begin with.
What if we could let you keep the original, he asks, five minutes after he just told me they couldn't do that.
Anyway, I'm keeping the original and they're giving me $20 credit, better than nothing I guess.

eel why are you cursed

eel should just move to amish country :(

Nah, I got $20 out of it, and I can't see the spot unless the text happens to display right underneath it. I'm all good.

New nook is coming with the same type screen (http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeremygreenfield/2013/10/28/rumor-barnes-noble-to-launch-new-e-reader-thursday-october-31)
How hard is it to strip whatever DRM is on ebooks ??? Its pretty painless isn't it?
-
Yeah, there are plug-ins for Calibre.
