:o :o :o
That is official?!
Just finished the album too. By far the album of the year for me. Did not disappoint.
Ghetto Woman :bow :bow :bow
Pretty much her whole EP, True. I think the only song she sang that wasn't from it is T.O.N.Y.
I'm going to Janelle's tour most definitely. You won't be disappointed.
It's one of those tracks that if you don't like it, you need to fix your taste in music straight up. That and Dorothy Dandridge Eyes, The Electric Lady, and We Were Rock and Roll. Maybe Q.U.E.E.N. too, but I can understand if that track comes off as divisive.Just finished the album too. By far the album of the year for me. Did not disappoint.

yah ghetto woman is nice
Ms. Monae is still my main chick though. I need to see her when she comes to NY next month. It's been too long.

Archandroid is good but is very unfocused to me, with some filler. It's the type of album that screams for an executive producer, at least to me. Whereas Electric Lady has more focus, the tracks blend together nicer, and overall there seem to be fewer ideas/experiments but what's left is a very good record. There's something about the unfocused element of it that keeps it on par with Electric Lady, though. It lended itself to some absolutely gorgeous experimentation (nothing on Electric Lady matches Say You'll Go/BaBopByeYa!/Cold War/57821).
I agree with all of Zephyr's comments except that last one. I love What An Experience. Victory is cool too. Not sure about the last one at the moment.
Both of her albums are great for different reasons. I can't say which one I like better yet. Leaning towards The ArchAndroid for now because I loved the experimentation on it and I can't forget how fucking happy I was that she didn't sell out in anyway for her first studio album or get fucked over by Bad Boy Records.

Yeah, before we had any details, I was worried her next album might leave behind the savior sexbot narrative and just toss the Metropolis Suite concept out the window in a bid for mainstream accessibility.
:gurl
Also, while I hate skits - and I hate these skits - they're ALMOST worth it for the line:spoiler (click to show/hide)"Robot love is queer." :supergay[close]

Aye, fuck you. :lol
I'm talking about her sound. I thought she'd be forced to make some poppy shit to cater to radio stations.
If this album bombs...if it bombs...:tocry
What An Experience is a great closer. Zeph is loco. Suite V is classic status.
It's TO crying.
It's good to have a smilie that represents my sad emotions. :tocry
They fit into an aesthetic of this whole album being on the radio by DJ Crash Crash of the Wondaland Jam Authority. In other words, it dovetails with the world she's creating.
I know I can't even imagine how amazing Suites VI and VII will be when we get those in 3 years.
can we just talk about
how great
dorothy dandridge eyes is?
fucking perfect feature. Esperanza's voice is such a great combo with Janelle's.

What an Experience reminds me of this divisive album closer:

Not sure if any of you are in NY besides Eric P, but tickets for her NY date at the Apollo Theater go on sale tomorrow at 12pm.
Her NY tix are for Oct 18th. I had to double check with my mom to see when my uncle's wedding in JA is and luckily it's not the same week. She asked if I really would have to think about which one to attend if they were on the same day. I chose not to respond and silently walked away. Clearly she doesn't understand how much I stan for this woman. Not sure if any of you are in NY besides Eric P, but tickets for her NY date at the Apollo Theater go on sale tomorrow at 12pm.
I have Oct 30 tix for Seattle :rock
Honestly the weakest tracks are the singles, but they are also probably the most marketable tracks. This summer has been dominated by a lot of songs that sound like throwbacks to the 60s and 70s (Blurred Lines and Get Lucky, especially) so this would be the perfect time for her to catch attention. Alas, I expect the album to bomb. I feared she'd get a Nicki Minaj feature or something but the album seems like it had no label tampering. Still...never sign to Bad Boy Records, boys and girls.
Lack of promotion AND Puffy isn't great at management.
That said I think Janelle has done a great job herself getting her mug out there, being the poster girl for Cover Girl this year, being featured in Fun's song...so she's definitely making a name for herself. Whether or not this translates into a lot of record sales though....
The problem is that Janelle is a hard sell. I don't even consider the girl pop though she's on a major label. How many albums is under her contract? She needs to sign with Def Jam.:holeup
“Diddy is very afraid to mess it up,” Monáe says of her artistic partnership with the hip-hop mogul. “And he should be.”
Janelle needs to go to GOOD Music. Kanye always looks out for people he's trying to market.No. Hell no.
Janelle?*shrugs*
Stuck... in her own head?
Oh my god, pitchfork shut the fuck UP
'above that stuff', huh (http://www.thecoli.com/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/5I5s8.png)
Buy them on stubhub. You can buy someone's bought ticket. You think I haven't checked there? The prices there are more than double the original ticket prices right now. Fuck resellers man.

:lol :lol :lol
It's Code is pretty much Jackson 5 era MJ. :rejoice
I like Willie Nelson, but that also proves my point. His music is almost as old as he is.
anyway
VICTORY
sounds like a Lauryn Hill song, for real.
Suite V and onward is just pure black excellence.Blackcellence.
Why does it need Archandroid's energy anyways? If this album doesn't get great reviews I'm going to...I'm going to...I don't know what I'm going to do. :(Reviews have ranged from on-par to a bit more negative than The ArchAndroid. I think people were expecting another massive genre-hopper album, but you can tell Janelle needs a more focused work to get on the radio and on the charts.
ArchAndroid didn't get on the radio either, outside of one song.well I know, but I'm saying The Electric Lady is clearly geared and focused towards getting her on there. However, I don't think she chose all the right songs for singles, as good as QUEEN and Dance Apocalyptic are. Ghetto Woman and Electric Lady are killer singles.
Who the fuck cares? It's just reviews. I'm actually surprised people still or have ever followed reviews in music. This isn't like movies or fucking videogames where they're expensive and can be time consuming. Listen to it and decide.
this could potentially detour her direction when I LIKE her current direction. It won't. Not her.
https://twitter.com/JanelleMonae/status/63037713221296129what did she retweet?
Chill out guys, I got this stanning thing in the bag. :pimp
lmao beezy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uZxhtavYyw&t=1m55s)
Unfortunately I don't think that number will increase greatly without a big hit or a more stable schedule of releases. She's not Gaga or some other big time pop star, I don't think she can afford to put out one album every three years.
Proof. Needed.
sales predictions have her pulling in double the first week sales of ArchAndroid (~50k for Electric Lady)Is this US only?
good to see! Sad that she's only (doubled) her fanbase in 3 years, though.

She makes her money on the road, not with albums. That applies to most people though.
She'll be fine. I don't think her album has anything on it that can get radio play but she's capable of making a radio song.
http://youtu.be/Oxls2xX0Clggreat video. she looks so beautiful in it
:heart :heart :heart
Does she have abs?
The Electric Lady gained a new fan thanks to this thread :rejoice.
http://instagram.com/p/foZRn2l0h-/I was gonna say this is totally part of the Come Alive (War of the Roses) performance. My favorite part is when the whole band wakes up and we just get fucking crazy with it!

Easily the best and most fun performance I've seen from her up to this point. Not exaggerating when I say that she had complete control of the crowd. She got off stage at one point and slowly walked through the aisles alone without any bodyguards or Wondaland members.
This one fat guy refused to get low during the performance, and she just stood there and adorably pouted in a faux-annoyed way. He just stood there and took a picture with his phone :smug:heartbeat :heart :heartbeat
Hi, Janelle!
Hey, darlin', how are you?
Fine, thanks. Where are you?
I am in a cave, in Mexico.
How come?
I am basically eating and praying.
What does your prayer involve?
That this Pepsi campaign (1) becomes the biggest campaign ever.
Naw. She likes carpet.says who
